This is a gorgeous property. The rooms are comfortable, sparely furnished and very attractively decorated. We were comfortable in the room and slept well, but the really early risers 0400 or so, were extremely audible. The food was very good and nicely presented. The setting encouraged friendly conversation and made for good company. The guides were exceptional. This is a wonderful place to stay, but do be aware you will hear a lot of noise from the other rooms and activity in the walkways and kitchen.

We loved this place! The rooms are quite spacious, well maintained, clean, with comfortable beds. Food was quite good: Panamanian with some western elements. The Sunday dinner was amazing (book a Sunday!) and the communal seating encourages a friendly atmosphere and conversation among guests. The birding tours and hikes were very well organized, and the only issue we had (water was not warm enough) was resolved immediately once we informed the staff. We definitely will stay at Canopy establishments again, next on our list being the newly opened lodges in Darien.

We spent several nights at Canopy Tower before coming here and I was not prepared for the difference. While Canopy Tower is spartan, Canopy Lodge is luxurious! Huge rooms, nice size bathrooms, balconies with seating. Great beds. Food was very good.

The setting is beautiful. It's on a stream on a large property with trails. Birds are all over.

We went with a Guide on 2 trips a day and saw fantastic birds. The Guide knew how to find the birds.

Some trips were more strenuous than others, which was fine with us. But another group had people who were not in as good a shape and that dictates the trips. Also, our guide took whoever wanted to go on the trip (since there was just me and my friend) which can be difficult if other people are at a different level of birding. We had a couple of non-birders one day, beginning birders another day and the last day, a very experienced birder who was mainly interested in a few select species.

Another group there had 8 people and were given their own Guide which was perfect since they were all the same level.

I highly recommend this trip. The birding is excellent and the accommodations far exceeded expectations.

Since we could not get more than 5 consecutive nights at the Canopy Tower, we chose to book another 6 nights at the Canopy Lodge for our 11 day birding tour (See Tower review "What an Experience"). Thus, we had just come from the Tower deep in the jungle to the lodge nestled in the rain forest at the steps of the cloud forest. The lodge property is striking with its unique open air lobby design, and meandering crystal clear stream. The rooms were as spacious as any 5 star hotel but the rooms at the lodge are complimented with a large balcony and comfortable seating. Unfortunately, we did not have too much time to enjoy the amenities of the room since we took full advantage of the birding guides with two tours a day. Our tours covered 3 to 4 habitats from the coast to the cloud forest and it was amazing. I was traveling with my wife and dedicated birder, young daughter. Like clock work, each day we met with our guide and went over our bird list (Oh! we had a great siting of a Jaguarundi too). We managed to sneak in a few hours here and there to enjoy the lodges's wonderful water park that is equipped with a giant tree house overlooking beautifully crafted swimming pools and rope swings that are fed by the stream water. Our mid-day dips were truly invigorating. And my daughter got to impersonate Jane of the jungle swinging rope to rope. All this activity, made us very hungry and we ate three very healthy meals a day. The dining experience was on-par but the staff and their hospitality was over-the-top. The friendly setting of the lodge allowed us to enjoy mingling and making friends with other guests. I don't believe in perfection but our stay at the lodge was flawless. For us, the Canopy Lodge and Tower were completely different experiences but they both make ideal base camps for people seeking nature thus are highly recommended. We'll be back to visit the new Canopy Camp in Darien to seek the infamous Harpy Eagle.

Room Tip: Everyone probably says this but I think we had the best room in the house. Ask for Cinco!

"Oh, you have to stay at Canopy Lodge sometime in your life," some birders told us one time. And so that's what we did.

This was our second trip to Panama and it was time to visit El Valle. Because we had stayed at the Canopy B&B on our last trip we were able to get a discount and a room upgrade at the Lodge. The room upgrade is totally worth it, by the way. Floor to ceiling windows in a corner room brings in a great deal of light and spectacular views of birds and mammals.

The zero-gravity deck chairs on the veranda are perfect to recline in after a day of birding on your feet.

I took advantage of the spa service, where a woman comes to your room and massages all your troubles away. Make sure you take advantage of this when you're at the lodge.

The food is super, includes wine with dinner. Sodas are included in the price of your stay (We had the all-inclusive package.)

The rooms are clean, the bathroom spacious, and rooms are well lit. Umbrellas are provided around the property and the common area is an outside space with comfortable chairs, a hammock and chair swing. All of that and a stream that babbles in the background, and feeders around the property that brings in the birds.

More importantly, the staff was exceptional and recognized that my hiking abilities whilst birding were different than the others in our group. Without making much ado about anything, the staff arranged for my husband and I to have a private guide for our remaining days, so we could bird at our own pace and not slow down the others in the group.

The guides are genius and know precisely where all the birds are. My only concern is that they might be overusing bird call recordings. On my next visit I might suggest that they not feel pressured to use or overuse the recordings. That is, if we have our own private guide. Not sure how well that would go over if there are others in our group.

Some suggestions:

Would love stronger wifi (was limited to about a 10-foot radius in the common area), most ideally in the rooms.

Jam at breakfast would be a request. That seemed to be the only thing missing.

Otherwise, our stay (3 nights) was heaven on earth--a veritable Garden of Eden. Can't wait to go back.

We were scheduled to stay with Canopy Lodge in November and had to make some changes due to health issues. Raquel from Canopy Lodge couldn't have been more helpful and accommodating as we made adjustments to our plan.

We can't wait to visit, but their kindness and professionalism compelled us to write this review in advance of the trip!

Seems like a great place with great people!

The Canopy Lodge in El Valle, Panama, is a unique and lovely destination. Modern, beautiful architecture and stunning rooms, all open to the cool mountain air and the lovely grounds and streams, are just one part of the experience. The marvelous birding guides, Carlos , Danilo, Alexis and Moyo were so amazing in their ability to show us the wonderful birds which make this such an amazing experience. We were on our first trip out of the USA to go birding, and were so thrilled by our 4 nights there, as well as the equally wonderful 4 nights at the Canopy Tower. I truly cannot pick a favorite between the 2 because they are so unique. We will never forget our trip there and hope to one day return.
