Casa Di Pietra

We arrived at Casa di Pietra at dark after a drive from Panama City, and it was perfect! Quiet, lovely natural setting with fresh mountain breezes through the room's open windows. Exactly what we were hoping for! The grounds are beautiful and the atmosphere is peaceful and pleasant. This is a beautiful place and well worth the detour up to El Valle. Breakfast was wonderful as well!

Room Tip: We had a 2nd floor room with a balcony and views on two sides. Very nice! Only thing was the bathr...

We landed in el valle in may 2012 and happened to check into casa di pietra not knowing it would be the best experience of our lives. Its welll situated and has superb views. Luis the owner was extremely hospitable and cooked the best breakfast for us.

Place is clean and has everything a great b&b should have.

Room Tip: ask for a room on the first floor

We came here as our first stop on our Honeymoon. The owner was SUCH a sweetheart, he took care of all our needs. Everyone in this little town knows each other so if you need anything, someone will hook you up. The owner got us a reservation at this amazing Chef's home. He recommended places to go and cooked an amazing Panamanian breakfast. I knew I really enjoyed the traditional tortillas of Panama and would give me extra every morning. Our room had a shared balcony, and I work at Central Park zoo - stepping out on the balcony, I would see birds and animals that we have on exhibit! How awesome that was! It is within walking distance of many places, being that it is such a small town. We got here on Good Friday and the town was an AMAZING spectacle- I have never seen a parade like they had, we are not religious, but it was really amazing to see an entire town gather on the streets and march in honor of their religious beliefs. Our room was comfy, it was cool enough at night that AC was not necessary and we have zero complaints, what a pleasant stay!

It has been five months since we stayed at Don Luis’s lovely Casa, but its charming peace still infuses my memory. The short read is: it’s an incredible value in El Valle, rustic and resplendent, unique and unforgettable.

Casa is the kind of place where you can arrive road weary after dark, be welcomed by Luis’s son and restored by Luis’s cooking; their service – on short notice, with candlelight and breeze dancing about the table – soothes and sates. Buy a bottle of wine, bring what you don’t finish to your room (or enjoy another), and sleep deeply.

Awaken to the sounds of the jungle in the comforts of a bed and breakfast. The stone house (i.e., casa de pietra) nestled amid swaying trees and grounds well tended by friendly staff feels like home, but luxuriant. And then there is breakfast.

Don Luis takes pride in your plate, personally greets and offers you an omelet. Fresh fruit and coffee are followed by eggs so vibrantly colored one wonders whether there is cheese in them. (If so, you can’t detect it in their deliciousness.) Every meal here manages to be simple and sumptuous at once, and perfectly satisfying. As you finish, feathered friends and foreign fans flock around Casa before flying back out into the surrounding terrain. Every living thing seems to quietly, happily chirp.

Nearby are local attractions which Don Luis will help point you to (take his map with you, just return it, no problem). El Macho waterfall, a zoo where the local golden frog, jaguars, ostriches and such reside; other sightseeing, hiking and beaches are convenient to reach by vehicle. Other establishments’ restaurants and scenery are a few mountain roads away; the local coffee stand offers outdoor, sunlit seating – and in a pinch, cheese, meats and other victuals that will get you by when you’ve waited to long to head into town for dinner. (These too, Don Luis improved for us, providing us plates and personal improvements for our olives and finger foods – turning sad sundries into a magical moonlit meal, once again.)

Coming and going from Casa, bougainvillea beckons and bids you goodbye; you’re sad to leave and always happy to return. It’s the kind of place where you can come and go anonymously, never seeing anyone, or end up in a spontaneous late night discussion with the innkeeper, his brother-in-law and a playlist of songstresses and crooners whose names you swore you logged in your Blackberry but now can’t retrieve. Casa is like those songs, the magic of which you remember even if you fail to recall their artists. Don Luis paints a becoming portrait of one’s life in Panama.

Note, if you prefer plush or frequently refreshed room linens, this may not be your paradise.

Room Tip: The upper floor balcony rooms are perfect for enjoying wine and wilderness by moonlight or first lig...

My husband and I had a delightful stay at Casa di Pietra. Luis and his staff were wonderfully hospitable and helpful throughout our stay. We enjoyed our cozy and clean accommodations and were even allowed to bring our small dog, a definite bonus. The garden was lovely and the Costa Rican style breakfast was delicious. We hope to return again!

We stayed at Casa di Pietra in May. We had a lovely room on the second floor with windows all around and a small balcony overlooking the stunning gardens. It felt like being in our little tree house. However, what made our stay an unforgettable was the warm hospitality of Luiz. We were sad to leave and will definitely come back one day.

I had a wonderful 2-night stay here in a third floor room. The property is gorgeous, with fruit trees, a small river, a pond, a coffee tree and at night there is a serenade of toads and cicadas. You can also see a number of birds and small lizards wandering through. It's very well located, on a quiet street off the central avenue. My room, which was more like a newly-built mountain cabin, had a double bed, private bathroom with hair dryer and shower, and a balcony with rocking chairs. The whole house is very clean and they also provide some soap and shampoo in the bathroom. The room does not have air conditioning, but the fan provided ample cooling. Luis was a most gracious host, very easy going, knowledgable and interesting. Breakfast was FILLING with fruit, bread, coffee, juice and whatever loveliness Luis cooks up, usually something with eggs from the his chickens, some form of meat and also a Panamanian tortilla (which is like a corn fritter). His chicken tamales are excellent. Also, Luis has a few bikes available, which was a perfect way to explore the town since I didn't have a car. Also of note is that Luis is very responsive on e-mail with regards to the reservations and he even includes a map to the house for ease. I would ABSOLUTELY recommend that all of my friends stay here. Thank you!!!

Room Tip: If you're sensative to roosters in the morning, ask for a room on the far side of the house
