“Lovely hotel”
Reviewed 15 March 2013 via mobile

Difficult to summarise all the great things we had here. The lovely family who is leading the hotel cannot be describe in words. You stay like home. Lovely rooms, dishes. Unlimited program opportunity . Try to learn skiing with the hotel manager or, a mount climbing. Unforgettable experience. Must try, visit

The negative reviews left by others based purely on the nationality of the hotel staff is quite frankly absurd and downright prejudice. Yes, most of the staff are not Austrian but so what? They were super friendly, always had a smile on their face and were extremely helpful. Nationality should have absolutely no bearing on the experience. Their English wasn't great but they knew enough to understand our needs. I requested an extra pillow as they're quite thin and the receptionist ran out and grabbed me one immediately, which I was very impressed with.

The hotel was cozy, the rooms were comfy and is exactly what one would expect from a 3 star rating: nothing overly fancy but certainly not of poor quality as some people have reviewed. The beds were a tad bit hard but that's due to personal preference. Some of my friends liked it but I personally prefer softer beds. We were fortunate enough to have a room with a balcony view of the snow covered mountains during our stay, which added to the experience.

WiFi was free but was only available in the lounge and restaurant area, which is a shame. Still it was better than nothing and we spent most of our time snowboarding/skiing anyway so we didn't really use it much.

The only downside that I could think of is the high salt content in some of the food. For some odd reason, the food (throughout the entire town and NOT just the hotel) was extremely high in salt. One of my friends theorised that this is due to Rauris being an active/sporty resort and the food is intentionally salty to replenish what we lose via sweating. In any case, putting this aside, the breakfast and dinner buffet at Sonnhof was pleasant and once again the service was quick and friendly.

Overall, it's a neat little hotel, one that I would definitely stay at again. Don’t pay any attention to the racist reviews left by others.

We spend our ski holiday in this little 3 star hotel with friends. By arriving we are greated very friendly, we checked in Comfort room at 2. floor. Our room was cleaned, comfortable and cosy. However, the furniture is a little bit old but it is good value with price.
We had dinner in a spacy dining room with a wonderful view to the hill, the foods was very delicious.
This hotel is in a good location, with about a 15 minutes walk to the ski school/ ski lifts and about 5 minute walk to the shops, there are also some nice walks all around the hotel.
I can offer you this hotel, if you want a good holiday for budget price and you need an excellent staff.

Good choice for a short term holiday!

Room Tip: Higher floors have an breathtaking panorama to the hill.

When we arrived in the hotel carpark the amount of Romanian, Hungarian & Lithuanian registration cars parked made us doubt the Sonnhof was a good choice. The person who met us at Reception was clearly not Austrian and as every notice on display was written in Hungarian as well as Austrian we quickly realised the hotel was run by a Hungarian family. None of the staff appeared to be Austrian and the majority of guests neither English nor Austrian. The room we were given was large but cold, gloomy and uninviting, with scruffy worn furniture and the smallest TV we have ever seen .We asked for another room but told the hotel was full, our request for more pillows and hangers (just 2 in the wardrobe) were ignored. The food served in the (again scruffy & unwelcoming) dining room was filling but stodgy, not a great deal of choice and not especially hot. The dining room resembled more of a canteen, mostly long tables which gave a very regimented feel. Anyone who has stayed in an Austrian run hotel or pension before will be familiar with the warm welcome that Austrians give, this hotel has none of that warm feeling. We cannot think of any redeeming features of this property and don't believe that this hotel should be advertised in Neilson, Neckermann etc brochures as an Austrian hotel. A budget price hotel it maybe but we can only advise you to spend a little more money and stay elsewhere. We would not recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: Choose a room in another hotel!

If you don’t mind spiders in your room, dark and gloomy interiors, old and shabby furniture and you don’t mind going to sauna via restaurant – this is the hotel for you! We booked Sonnhof hotel from Neckermann. We expected a typical Austrian 3-star standard but to our surprise we discovered that the hotel is run by Hungarians and its 3-star status is far from acceptable. Maybe Hungarians have a different understanding of cleanliness and hospitality?
In order to get to our room from the reception (which is located on the ground floor) we had to go to level -1 of the building which in practice resembles a typical basement! (Neckermann assures in his brochure that this particular kind of room DZX2 is refurbished and more spacious than standard DZX1). Maybe it is bigger than the standard room but I would never call it refurbished with its old chairs, dirty curtains and rather ugly and shabby bed! After we entered the gloomy interior I had to kill a few spiders running on the walls! I think this is not something you would expect from a 3-star hotel in Austria? We immediately asked to have our room changed for a different one but they refused explaining that the hotel was fully booked.
When we decided to go to sauna, we realized that we need to go through a restaurant, which seemed rather ridiculous. You don’t want to run half-naked among people who are having their meals at the tables, do you? What shocked us even more is the fact that the swimming pool is located directly next to the dining room. Sitting at your table during dinner, you can smell the swimming pool water and you can hear children shouting and running around (the pool is open till 22). When we entered the sauna we saw no towels prepared for the guests. We had to go to the reception and ask for some because nobody bothered to see to it before.
The staff was generally friendly and polite but you expect more than just politeness from a vacation destination, don’t you?
In general, I think this hotel resembles more a student’s hostel than a typical cosy 3-star hotel in Austria. The guests are probably people who are lured by a relatively attractive price and good location and I belong to this group of naïve customers. The photos available on the hotel’s web page do not reflect the real standard of this place, so if you don’t want to be severely disappointed, don’t go there! I have never written a negative opinion about any place or hotel I visited and for the first time in my life I decided that this one is worth it!

Room Tip: Avoid rooms located in the basement (level -1)

We had an excellent time at this hotel. The food was generally good, the staff were really friendly and it was the perfect distance from the slopes. The rooms were comfortable and clean. The hotel is situated in the centre of the town, the shops were a walking distance away. There is a beautiful view of the mountains from the dining room and the walk to the slopes gave you the chance to take in the beauty of the town.
