“Excellent B&B”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 January 2011

We were looking for a nice B&B for our skiing vacation in Ehrwald. Haus Karl’s Ruh is more than just a nice B&B. Gary and Evelyn are the best hosts you can hope for. They are very friendly and take really good care of you.

The room was very clean and it felt like we were the first guests staying there. The beds were wonderful and therefore we slept like babies. The breakfast was very good, Gary and Evelyn provide everything you need.

The house is located close to the village centre (restaurants, smalls shops, cafe) and also close to the slopes and the cable car to the Zugspitze. We also enjoyed sitting in the sun on our balcony and watching the beautiful surroundings.

Gary and Evelyn can also provide lots of information about activities in the area, very useful!

We also enjoyed playing with Heidi (the family dog). She doesn’t listen too well, but she is very funny and sweet!

We definitely hope to return to this place one day!

Kind regards,

Joep & Romy (the Netherlands)

Hello Joep and Romy,

Thank you for the lovely comments and positive feedback, especially regarding the comfort and cleanliness of your room, which is really important to us.

It was a pleasure having you to stay and we really hope you will return to visit us again when you may find that we have managed to train Heidi to listen to what we tell her!

Regards and best wishes to you both,

Evelyn and Gary

Delightful, clean and relaxing accommodation in a superb valley (surrounded by high mountains) location. Very pleasant village (with a variety of good value restaurants) with good communications to the surrounding area, including the high mountains. Great breakfasts and Evelyn and Gary (convivial mine hosts) know all about the area if you're after advice. Separate room for guests to lounge. Boot room for drying gear if need be. Extremely good value for money.

We truly enjoyed out stay here. Our hosts were so friendly and helpful. We felt like a part of their family after only staying one night! Their home has been beautifully renovated and updated with loving care. The rooms were all nicely decorated, spacious and comfortable. Everything was very clean and new. Beautiful views of the mountains from the balcony. The breakfast was included and delicious. Very close proximity to the Austrian lift to the top of the Zutspig which was amazing! Our only complaint was that we couldn't stay longer. Our teenagers want to know when we can go back!!

We stayed for a week with Gary and Evelyn in Haus Karl's Ruh and had a fabulous time. They went out of their way to make our stay great and we really enjoyed meeting them and Heidi the labrador dog. The haus/chalet is in a great location with a lovely garden to sit in. Our room was very spacious with very comfortable beds. Breakfast was very good too. There is a lounge for guests to use with a variety of useful books on the area, as well as reading books, a tv, dvd player and lots of DVDs.
Gary and Evelyn will happily recommend places to go and are a mine of useful information about Ehrwald and the area.
A wonderful place to stay and a real "home from home"

You'll not meet nicer people than the owners of this beautiful residence, Gary and Evelyn, who make you feel completely at home from the minute you arrive. They go the extra mile to accomodate your needs in every way. Haus Karl's Ruh is situated in some of the most stunning scenery you'll find anywhere . It has an ambience of brightness and cleanliness with the house tastefully decorated from top to bottom. Our room had an en-suite and a balcony from which you could sit and enjoy the amazing panorama of the Austrian & German Alps surrounding our location - in short ,just like a photo from a travel brochure. It is only a short walk from the picturesque Erhwald village centre where there are numerous good eating facilities. If you need advice on where to go for walks, Gary is more than helpful in imparting the best information. So if you are looking for somewhere to really enjoy a holiday, don't miss Haus Karl's Ruh!!

According to the owners, we were the first Americans to stay with them (at least, since they have taken ownership and remodeled). I don't know if that is something to be proud about, but they should be very proud of what they have done to make Haus Karl's Ruh.

In a nutshell, not only would I recommend this to an American tourist that enjoys staying at B&Bs, but I already have recommended it to many of my friends. In fact, I look forward to visiting them again.

Haus Karl's Ruh is a relatively good sized house for Europe that has a number of rooms converted to what Americans would call a B&B. The house has been recently refurbished (as of 2010) and the spaces are decorated in pleasing colors and textures. The setting and views from the house are some of the best in the world.

The proprietors are very helpful, speak perfect English (they came from Great Britain) and very friendly. They also have a friendly dog. While some B&B operators seem to hang on your every move, they kept a nice balance with being available but letting you have your space.

Price:
The pricing is clearly stated on their website. Not only did we find their pricing to be an outstanding value for the area, but it was nearly the cheapest place we stayed in Europe. There were no other hidden costs and the options they provide were reasonably priced.

The Room, an "Ensuite":
Like a typical American, we chose to stay in an "ensuite", one of two rooms that have a private bathroom. The room had a very comfortable double bed (about the size of a Queen bed in America) and Armoire for holding clothing and other items plus a nice chair. Our room had a balcony with outstanding views of the valley below, mountains around, and the pasture next door holding a single cow. The room that our Aunt and Uncle stayed in did not have the balcony but had similar views out their window. The bedrooms do not have TVs or air-conditioning. The only negative was a tight space on one side of the bed.

Bathrooms:
Our private bathroom had a shower, toilet and sink, all relatively large and generous by European standards but relatively small by US standards. We did not find this to be a negative and larger, rotund bodies will fit fine. A sliding door closes it off to the bedroom. The bathroom was very clean and modern. While my wife and I tend be overly germ conscious, we felt this bathroom was well sanitized and did not feel the need to sanitize it ourselves.

I did not look at the shared bathroom for the other two rooms so I cannot write about them.

Community Room:
The house has a small community room that we used to hang out in with those traveling with us. We watched the "Sound of Music" from their small movie collection on the TV in this room, just having come from Salzburg where we took the Sound of Music Tour. Breakfast is served in this room on two large tables. One is booth style and is difficult to get in and out if you are on the back side. The wonderful thing about this room is the big picture window with a breathtaking view of the Zugspitze Mountain. Simply awesome!

Food:
A breakfast is included with the room and is served in the community room. As tradition in Europe, fresh brotchen, cold cuts, cheeses, jam, yogurt, cereal, milk, juices and coffee are included. We found all items to be of excellent quality. A lunch can included at a small extra charge. They also provide beer, water, coffee and other consumables at very reasonable charges, making it very convenient when you want a little something in the evening.

Since we were there during the off-season, it was difficult to find an open restaurant off-hours. Be sure you have your meals at regular times. The small town of Ehrwald and all its services are within easy walking distance. We highly recommend Spencer's for great pizza and is just at the base of the road leading to Haus Karl's Ruh. Just take consideration that their menu items won't be exactly the same as in America. Sorry, no Pepperoni (which is peppercini to them).

Accessibility:
There are several stairs that need to be climbed to get to the rooms. A small set enters the house, then a few more to the community room and then a few more to the bedrooms. Those that can take a few stairs should be fine and can easily get around otherwise. This place is not good for wheelchair access.

Parking and transportation:
There is adequate parking even if every room had a car. Our large station wagon fit fine. I cannot speak to public transportation since we had our own car. We did have a little problem finding the house initially so get good directions before attempting to find it.

Free unlimited internet connection was provided throughout the house.

So in the end, we loved the people, the place, the setting, and the price. We'll definitely be back.
