“Disappointing”
Reviewed 3 September 2011

We booked for 4 nights. Of the dinner a la carte menu with 4 courses 2 were veal & 2 were for 2 people. This remained the same each evening. The next disappointment came at breakfast. We were shown to an unheated glass leanto room and
presented with no choice, no croissant, or baguette and coffee
from a thermos flask.21euros each!
After a second dinner we cancelled
our booking for meals and left a day
early. The staff were charming.

It will be interesting to see what the hotel/restaurant is going to be like after April 2011. It is being completely rebuilt. I had a drink with the owner in his other simpler place - "Froggie's" and he assured me that it would be open on time. He does have a michelin star now so it should be good. Review to follow in the Summer.

We booked to stay at Le Grenouillere last week and received confirmation of my stay there. When we arrived we were told that our room was not at the hotel but at a B&B owned by the owner in the next town. As it was getting late and we had had long drive we had no choice but to take it. The cost was €125 when the typical local rate for Chambre d'Hote is about €50 - €55
The B&B was in a narrow oppressive alleyway off a dingy back street
There are plenty of pictures of the hotel on Trip Adviser so I thought I should add a few of the "extra" rooms.
This has completely ruined my holiday to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

The location is lovely as the auberge is situated in a park with a stream and lush woods nearby. Just up the hill is the back part of the old castle ramparts, which are great. The auberge is known for its food and did not disappoint with creative cooking and a few interesting surprises. However, it is pricey but, drinks aside, it is worth it.

Unfortunately the hotel is not. The room we stayed in was cramped, dark and noisy. Although the auberge is in a park setting, the hotel rooms are surrounded by gravel paths which create a surprising amount of noise when anyone walks past. The staff is indifferent at best. For example, when asking about WIFI, which is shown to be available on their web site, we were told they did not have it and that it was a silly question, "You are in the country, what do you expect?" When we pointed out the web site details to the owner, he just shrugged. Montreuil-sur-Mer has loads on interesting hotels so stay elsewhere but do have a meal here if you can afford it.

We went to Auberge de la Grenouillere for one night and were pleasantly surprised to find that it is in such a beautiful and tranquil location right by a river outside the town of Montreuil-sur-Mer. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Our room was very modern but comfortable, and there were chairs and tables in the courtyard where one could have a drink before dinner. The food was outstanding - full of witty touches such as the "rock" on the table which the waitress attacked with a hammer and chisel and was actually meringue dyed with squid ink. The portions were very small and some dishes featured extremely fresh and exquisitely presented raw fish - so not for someone who does not like fish.
Breakfast the next morning was delicious with home made pattisseries, bread and jam. The decor in the restaurant is not great but that is part of its charm. Go and make your own minds up!

I have just got back from La Grenouillere for my fourth trip in as many years. Again, the food was imaginative and outstanding. The rooms are well decorated and comfy, particularly bearing in mind this is a restaurant with rooms in the French tradition and not a hotel. The staff were courteous, remembering us after over 12 months and incredibly welcoming.

I simply cannot understand the negative reviews of this place. The food is as good as any of the michelin starred restaurants in London and even with the Euro represents very good value for money. Clearly, the staff appreciate it if people make an effort to speak French to them, but they happily ran through items on the menu for those in the party with littel French.

As a venue to escape to from London for a night or two away this restaurant and this area of France is unbeatable. Ignore the naysayers and book!!

I have to say I'm suprised at the number of reviewers who found the restaurant staff at Grenouillere unfriendly.
I found the service both formal and welcoming, as one would expect of this type of establishment. We had lunch with my 12-year old son and without prompting the head waiter offered something off-menu and simple for him -- the best steak and chips he's ever had!
The rest of the party chose the menu gastronomique at 75 euros which was very good quality; well flavoured and imaginative. Different.
It's hard to judge value as pound sterling-based visitor right now, but Grenouillere is not unreasonable compared to other restaurants nearby and its wine list offers some reasonably-priced options. And the location is excellent; close to a riverside walk, below the walls of Montreuil. (We did not stay at the Auberge.)
