We have just returned from Crete and we stayed at the Matheos Apartments in Piskopiano. On the night that we arrived we found that the travel agent had overbooked and we would not have a room for a day or so. It was no problem for the wonderful staff at Matheos, they arranged transport at THEIR expense and took us to a friends apartments just in the next village. The following day the owner of Matheos came to see if everything was ok and arranged transport to take us back to our original apartments. Nothing was too much trouble. The room was very clean and spacious with a great view of the sea. All the staff were friendly and helpful and made our stay of two weeks great. The room was cleaned every other day and remained spotless. I have read a few negative comments about Matheos prior to booking and I'm glad I ignored them. You could not possibly fault this place. So warm and friendly it made it feel like home. Our thanks to Helena and George, oh and not forgetting Kosta. We are definitely booking again next year but will book direct with them and arrange our own flights. We stayed in the middle of three lovely villages and were spoilt for choice when it came to restaurants. All in all we had a great time and would recommend it to anyone who wants a relaxing time in a chilled out atmosphere. One final thing...I recommend the BBQ cooked by George. The food was out of this world and the 15EUR per person was a bargain. Once again thank you Helena, George and Kosta for making our stay so memorable.

When I first read all the reviews I was sceptical as nowhere could be as good as this place seemed to be, but it is true. These family run apartments are everything and more. We have never before spent so much time with others on our holiday, usually I like to spend the time with my husband as our busy lifestyle means that we do not get to spend a lot of time together, so our holiday is the time when we like to be on our own and reconnect. This year we were welcomed by Kosta when we arrived and once we had been shown to our apartment encouraged to come up to the bar. He then offered to send out for pizza for us as he thought we might be hungry. It was 1am. How much better service can you offer than that. We chatted to the family that had also just arrived and from then on that was the tone for the holiday. You can be alone at Mateos if you want to, but you will never be lonely.
From then on we had a wonderful time, we ate at the local tavernas and I would not fault any of them for the meals we had. we walked around the beautiful villages and we relaxed. Helen, George, Katie and Kosta all did their best to ensure we had a good holiday. It was almost like being at home and being cared for by your Mum. For the first time ever I have found a place where I want to go back not only to the same island, but to the same accommodation. To misquote Arnie "We will be back."

Room Tip: 105 downstairs has a view to the sea and is cooler because it does not get the sun on the terrace al...

Nice friendly appartments, clean and well kept. Small and family run and easy to use as a base to travel around. The two local villages (Both within easy walking distance) had plenty of nice taverna's with great food. We had a mix up from the travel booking and Helen only expected 2 of us but we were 4! she did everything to sort it out and made us most welcome, it was not her fault but she sorted it within 24 hrs and accomodated us all without problem.
The only slight critism would be that the showers are somewhat small and leaky ! but we had plenty of hot water and good pressure.

This is our second visit to Matheos and it was every bit as good as the first time we went two years ago. We could not fault anything, everywhere very clean, tidy and inviting. We loved using it as a base, going out most days but also looking forward to going back 'home' at the end of each day where we knew we would be made welcome and feel looked after. The family are brilliant and make all their guests feel valued. I guess my only disappointment is the same as the first time we went - which is Kostas's taste in football teams! Seriously though if you want somewhere to relax and feel at ease plus having a relatively central locality to go out and about in on this wonderful Island then look no further - Matheos has it all. And should you do the sensible thing and book make sure you go up to the old village and get to know the locals they are a great set of people as indeed are all the taverna owners within easy reach of the apartments. Thanks Helen, George and Kostas for giving us such a great holiday! We will be back!

We abandoned the five star luxury hotels this year and headed for this little Greek gem instead. This is a slice of the real Crete, simple clean apartment, with a nice view and on the doorstep to a truly picturesque Cretan village which comes alive at night.
Kosta was a great host and the bar offered excellent home cooked food at a reasonable price, a range of ice cold drinks and lovely icecream. The weekly BBQ was interesting, lots of good food and nice to sit and chat with the other guests.
We found the accommodation basic but serviceable and we paid extra for the air conditioning which we appreciated. We also paid a small amount for an in room safe.
The pool was great and it was so refreshing to be somewhere small, where everyone behaved civilly towards each other rather than sneaking out at the break of dawn to reserve sun beds. No matter what time we ventured out we always had a bed and a spot to put it.
Sadly most of the many tavernas nearby offered very poor food (frozen vegetables, frozen battered fish, not much fresh food at all) at expensive prices. However, do go and queue on the wall for a table at Davids, the traditional Greek taverna which is always full. If you want good food go where the locals go! Brilliant fresh food, cooked right in front of you and SO reasonable! Our best and cheapest meal of the week.
Do visit Spinalonga - fantastic place and the scenery is amazing.
Would we go again? In a heartbeat.

Second time here and again it was great. Helen , George , kostas and Kate a big thank you for a great time can't wait to return. These are great apartments kept clean and tidy. Typical Greek apartments basic but enough to do what you need to do. The pool is fine big enough to cool off and have a little swim about. Pool side bar which does food inc breakfast the food is very nice and reasonably priced.you have to do the weekly BBQ it is so good plenty full and very tasty, is a great night you tend to get most of the guests there and get to know everyone. I would recommend these apartment to anyone you will have a great time . Turn up as a stranger leave with lots of friends.
