“The perfect hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2014

It was our first time to Crete. We stayed for five nights at this hotel. We enjoyed our stay in Platanias ( the name of the area where the hotel is situated ) so much not only because the hotel was perfect but also because everything in this place is indeed pleasant. The buffet is amazing (we were booked on bed and breakfast basis but we were impressed by the variety and quality of food so we added dinner starting the second day). The staff were so helpful, they provided us with all the information we needed and they booked us hop-on-hop-off tour ( old harbor is worth a visit with lots of shops and restaurants).

Room Tip: Rooms with garden view are still nice.

We have stayed in for a week in early August 2014, as a family of 4, but also part of a larger group of friends. Our room was a maisonette type, with view to one of the swimming pools. On the positives of this hotel are the location, the personnel - very friendly, smiling an helpful, flexible to change dinner for lunch voucher or breakfast for picnic bags; the food for breakfast and dinner. However, the room it is rather small and the bathroom really small; swimming pools are a few but also small and give a feeling of crowded. The adults only swimming pool is of 1.60m depth and pretty narrow. The hotel doesn't have its own beach, you have to cross a narrow street (not a problem) to reach it. Sunbeds and sun umbrella are for extra charge and sometimes the beach was extra crowded by people or children from camps coming to have a swim from somewhere else. Wifi signal is not very strong - helping people to disconnect:-). I personally like the eco approach on offering bathroom amenities only on demand, however this is not really to be expected in a 5* resort.

Dear Mr. / Mrs. Vesnafuiorea,
First of all we would like to thank you for your positive comments regarding your recent stay in our hotel.
I truly appreciate your time spending for writing this review and I am very satisfied that you are pleased of our location, staff and services. I am sorry that we have not managed to fulfill your desires regarding the room size. You have booked for a maisonette which is a split level room, convenient for families and approximately 40 s.m. During your next stay please check our family rooms and suites which are even more spacious. Moreover, I would like to inform you that the hotel has it is own beach, which also has a blue flag. The beach distance from the main hotel is just 10 steps!
We hope we have the chance to welcome you again in Porto Platanias Beach Resort & Spa and provide you with our best services!

Stayed here for 5 nights early August. Room with sea view was as expected. Twin beds pushed together though was simply not a double and not what you would expect from 5*. I would agree with most reviewers that this is really a 3 * equivalent in the UK. The food was good. Good variety and choice catering for everyone. You would be a very fussy eater if you couldn't find something to eat. Meals times had recently been altered, so whenever we went for a meal there was no apparent scramble or queuing for food. The food was never hot, this is a shame because by the time you had walked back to your table in another room it was on the cool side. Again would agree with others who had all inclusive, It was a nuisance only being able to use one bar, which meant it was often crowded and service slow. Our biggest bug bear and the main reason we chose this hotel was for the adult only pool. It was the one place where you could always get a sun bed and didn't feel the need to get up at the crack of dawn to reserve a bed, however it was rarely adult only and the hotel did not really insist that the children went to one of the other pools. This meant the area was often noisy and full of kids splashing and jumping in and out of the pool....Either insist it is or don't advertise an adult area only. On the plus the staff were all helpful, polite and efficient. The hotel is well located for all facilities and is close to the airport without being annoyed by airplane noise. Wifi non existent outside of reception and whilst I agree it is sad if you are holiday and it is the be all and end all, but in this day and age it is easy to achieve with very little cost and is part of everyday life, equally as I am self employed, getting emails once a day is essential. This would have been more convenient in the room and again is not what you expect from 5* It would exceed expectations as a 3* but felt short changed as a 5*

Dear MR. /Mrs. TaggieDoningtonPark,

First of all I would like to thank you for taking time to share your experience regarding your stay in our hotel with other travelers.
Further to your review, I am very glad that you are satisfied regarding your accommodation and the variety of food choices at the main restaurant. However, I would like to apologize for not meeting your expectations concerning the 5* facilities. Further, I would like to inform you that a lot of 5* star hotel in Greece and all around the world have the same policy of the double bed as two twin beds pushed together. Moreover, I feel sorry for your inconvenience at the main restaurant. Even though we extended the times of the meals during high season in order to service more efficiently our guests it seems that we have not accomplished that for you.
Withal, I am sorry for the unpleasant moments at the adult’s pool area because of children noise. I would like to assure you that our staff always supervises the area and we inform the parents of the children or the children themselves that the pool is adult only and they can use the other four pools all around the hotel.
Last but not least, I would like to apologize for not meeting your desires in regards to the speed of the Wi fi at the room, however you if you have informed the reception for this problem we would put a router into your room for a better signal and speed because we always try to satisfy all the needs of our guests.
Once more I truly appreciate your review and I hope we have the chance to welcome you again in our hotel and provide you our best services!
Sincerely,
Angeliki Sgouromalli

Very clean hotel, friendly staff. Good rooms, with nice selection of TV channels that always showed a good movie in the evening. Altough the Wi-Fi is free it's pretty slow at times. It worked very well at typical off-hours such after 10:30PM and early morning. It's the most reliable and stable free Wi-Fi I've ever had on a hotel, so can't really complain. The hotek was very easy to find your way around.

There was a nice selection of pools, both for adults and for kids. There are kid pools and adult-only areas, where the pools are a good depth And again I state the hotel premises were always exceptionally clean. Our rooms were very well isolated. There were a bunch of noisy kids living next to us and we only heard them when we were out on the terrace when they had their window open.

The food in the buffet was as you would expect from a hotel buffet, but nothing more. However, if you were not all-inclusive, such as us (half board) the drinks (soda, water etc.) were very expensive. It should be noted that It's actually very cheap to eat out in the town - where they serve better food and cheaper drinks, so perhaps consider that before ordering all-inclusive or half board etc. After a week of staying, it would not have been more expensive for us to eat out every day over going in the buffet. The eating times were flexible. I arrived for breakfast at closer to 10:30AM several days and there was no problem being seated and the food was still being made fresh. The earliest I saw them close the buffet room for breakfast was 10:20AM.

The Spa is excellent. Should be used. Very few people there and good facilities with reasonable pricing.

I see some people are complaining about the beach quality that there is a "dirty service road" to cross to get to the beach. Actually, the hotel is basically as close to the beach as you can get, the tiny road inbetween is more like a promenade. Dirty? No, but it is sandy there as obviously beachgoers have sand on their feet. There are no slimy rocks or black sand on the Porto's section of the beach, but go on closer to Agia Marina and there will be. The beach is clean all around. You can do some watersports on the beach, but frankly things such as the jetski rentals were ridiculously priced compared to other things you could do in the area. Jetski's were €80 for 30 minutes and €40 for 15... Of you walk on for a bit towards Agia there is a Pier where you can go Parasailing. It costs €40 for single and €50 for a double (two people), which is fair enough.

The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The receptionists were always smiling and happy and they arranged all our pick ups and trips for us. Even though we checked in late, they had arranged for meals ready for us waiting in our rooms.

We stayed for 4 nights in suite w/Private Pool. Which was not so private. The resort is not on the beach it's divided by a service road of a marina The beach access was dirty and beach had large slimy rocks that you had to walk over to get to swimming
The convenient store was managed by a very unfriendly woman that always had a scowl on her face. Not a very accommodating hotel overall
Paulis the lobby bartender was very nice. The hotel was in a good location. 3 star at best

Myself, my husband and stepson (Age 9) stayed at the hotel for 7 nights, All Inclusive in a Studio Room and Standard Room.

As a whole this hotel is really lovely!

The Atlantis Bar and Restaurant staff were pleasant, polite and always recognised a happy face.

The entertainers were really good, they had enough to keep EVERYONE busy, not just kids with a variety of games, from water polo, aqua aerobics suitable for all ages to kids disco.

The hotel was kept clean at all times.

The private beach is really nice too, located across this small quiet road. Even though you have to pay for a parasol and bed, it was very reasonable (2 beds and a parasol for 8 EUR for the whole day). You can still find 2 beds and a parasol at 11am! At the beach you can find lots of water sport activities at an extra cost!

The All Inclusive programme is available at the Atlantis restaurant and as a whole it was good. The food at lunch and dinner time is fantastic, the amount of choice and the quality is very good! (I'm Italian and I love my food). One night there was fresh sword fish! They have all the food you could want!
Breakfast is good, a lot of choice, there's bound to be something there that everyone likes. I can understand some of the previous comments about the "American Breakfast" but you have to understand that the English/ Americans are experts at fried breakfasts and it would be pretty hard to beat the one you would get at home.

The rooms are nice with modern decor and the WIFI is also good.

The pools are very nice, there are 5 different pools, each vary in size, the pool next to the Atlantis Bar has music playing which is nice and that's where they have the aqua aerobics.

All whom are thinking of booking this hotel, is that you specifically ask for a sea/pool or Garden view as the rooms and Studios that are facing the road are VERY noisy even with the windows shut and at night/early morning too!

If you go for a pool view be aware that by the Atlantis pool/ Bar that's the area for the night activities, where they play music until about 10.30-11pm so be aware, make sure you specify that you don't want to be by the Atlantis pool if you want to get early nights or are light sleepers.

I have to say that although this 5* rated hotel beats the one I stayed recently in the Maldives by far, I'm still questioning wether management know the full extent of 5* service and attention to detail that would allow themselves to be called a true 5* (as experienced in other hotels)! For example:

-In the rooms you have a kettle and tea cups but tea and coffee is available if requested and at an extra charge. Why?

-No mini bar - Available upon request

-Little toiletries aren't provided

-Windows and shutters don't block a lot of the outside noise

-steps going into the pool felt unsteady.

-quality of non alcoholic drinks available in the all inclusive programme was pretty poor. You have your standard soft drinks and basic non alcoholic drinks. From a 5* hotel I would expect more freshly made smoothies and juices.

-alcoholic drinks under the all the inclusive programme are all local drinks, if you want premium, a glass of prosecco, champagne or freshly squeezed orange juice you have to pay extra.

-Even though it's the hotels policy not to put the towel down on a sun bed at the crack of down, people still do it therefore if you want a sub bed you should get to the pool by 10am.

-We had a little bit of a hiccup, we're still not sure whose fault it was but had booked a studio room with Garden/Pool view through our Tour Operator Travel Republic but what we got is a studio room facing a lot of noisy car traffic with a mountain ahead of us. Now we complained for 2 days, finally they moved us to a Standard Room with an extra bed. What I wasn't impressed with is that obviously we didn't get what we had booked for, Studio Room with Garden/Pool View not only that but one of the receptionist and the room division manager tried to fog us off by saying that the mountain was classed as a garden view and that the description Garden/Pool view was a generic room description. Is this really what you call 5* customer service?

Again, here's another example of a hotel that call themselves 5* but lack in fine details and fail to go to the extra mile that a true 5* hotel would go to. Despite this, the hotel has a lot going for itself, it's big and spacious and it has everything that you will need to satisfy everyone's needs. If I was to book another holiday in the same area, I would definitely stay at this hotel and I would recommend it without a doubt to my family and friends.

We recently returned from 1wk stay in Platanias and thoroughly enjoyed! We couldn't have asked for a more relaxing holiday with so many options in the resort. It was a large hotel but we certainly didn't feel like we were, not even with regards to food or meal times. We were particularly pleased to have a room by the adults only pool which was quieter than the other larger pools. Perfect for us.

We were staying half board, and whilst there was more activity at breakfast and dinner, the staff managed it effectively and we felt well looked after. The front of house (Katarina) was lovely and friendly, managed to remember us from the second night and gave us our favourite tables at both meals! The food choice was good, fresh and varied every night.

The Hermes bar was a highlight for us- excellent service with a smile every night from Panos. He not only made our choice of drinks really well, but also made some lovely suggestions for us to try. We enjoyed his friendly service at the bar so much we chose to return most evenings to finish our night rather than stay out at the resort. Highly recommended!!!

The hotel spa was amazing! We were lucky enough to enjoy a whole day there to ourselves, but they mentioned that they take no more than 10 per day anyway so would have been pretty quiet even if they were busy. The facilities were luxurious and immaculate- best spa we've ever used!

The standard of cleanliness was the same across the whole hotel in fact, and maids were around all day either cleaning rooms or public areas. We have never stayed in such a spotless hotel abroad.

The hotel is very conveniently situated for visiting Chania, only 3.80euros by bus for both of us. However you could easily fill your time in Planatnias as the hotel is on the main street with loads of bars and restaurants and backs onto the beach too. The service overall was great, staff were always friendly and helpful. We would highly recommend.
