“Very relaxing holiday”
Reviewed 21 March 2010

We spent 2 weeks at the begining of august at this hotel, we have 2 young children aged 5 and 2.
We sat our loungers in front of the childrens paddling pool and in this area was the kids club, but it is not like your normal kids club. Stephanie who runs the club is amazing with the childen, They were free to come in and out, as we were sat outside and she could see us. They could draw, paint, play games watch a dvd or come out to us to play. We went with friends who have a 4 year old and we often would look at each reading books not quite believing that we were not entertaining one of them. I did not want to send my children to a kids club as I have not taken them on holiday to not spend time wuth them but this was such a fantastic set up and it was their choice.
Our room was clean, the food was good
We really enjoyed it and would go back.

Just back from a fortnight at this very good standard hotel. The room, with beautiful garden view, was spacious but bathroom poorly appointed and in need of minor repair.
The public rooms, and gardens, are magnificent with the older part of the hotel, for me,having the edge over the minimalist new wing in so far that there actually appeared to be people in the newer part!
Staff, without exception, very professional and pleasant and seemed to emjoy my pathetic attempt to speak a little(very)greek.
The food was hot ,plentiful, and varied - something,I would have thought ,for most normal people. The outside dining area was pleasant with tiered tables and we tried the "set meal" in the a la carte restaurant,in the new part of the hotel =superb food, beautifully presented by attentive staff - would recommend this as it breaks up the repetition of the ,admittedly splendid ,buffet.
Platanias, as a resort.was not my cup of tea - nothing remotely greek about it-but Chania, about 30 mins on local bus,was beautiful.Would strongly recommend Tamam turkish restaurant, one block behind the sea front restaurants - the Iranian risotto was fantastic.
There is a little "road train" which offers a variety of short trips into the Cretan countryside and this gave us a chanceto see some of the "real" Crete.=good value
And ,yes,it is an expensive island!
All in all,for what we paid, the Minoa Palace represented excellent value for money.

I had read many of the sites reviews prior to travelling and having siphoned through them I was basically expecting a nice hotel, average food and a dull resort. We had considered changing to another hotel having read some of the comments about the food, however I am glad we didn't.
I think many of the negative comments people have made did not take into account the price paid for the booking. The hotel classes itself as five star and within its price bracket it is, however if you go expecting something truly five star you would be being naive.
The hotel is modern, perfectly clean and the staff have a reserved but friendly manner. The room ( garden side ) was spacious and had all of the nice little touches that frustrate when they are not present, even little details that made a difference ( a personalised letter, robes, slippers etc ) We were perfectly happy with the room. I had considered upgrading to the new side but found that it was not necessary.
I was also initially put off by the fact that the hotel is in two parts with the main road in between. Apart from some traffic noise at the main pool on the older side it worked really well and was no problem at all. Don't be put off by me saying the older side - its lovely.
The food was superb for a hotel in this price bracket with plenty of choice. The menu did not seem to have much for kids though. In fact the clientele was mainly mature people with very few kids knocking about. It made for a very relaxed atmosphere. I had also read people complaining about the price of drinks when you eat, they are the same price as in the resort for lager and soft drinks but wine is expensive.
So, the hotel is very nice indeed if you want a relaxing and peaceful time. The evening entertainment is rubbish to be honest but I wasn't bothered. The last thing I wanted was somebody trying to do some audience participation nonsense I have seen dozens of times before. If you have reasonable expectations then you will be delighted by the hotel.
The resort though is a different matter. It is one long road of restaurants and the odd bar that runs alongside an average beach. It has little about it that is unique or has any particular character. It ia close to Chania, which is good. It also has a little section set up on a hill which makes for a pleasant walk. Other then that though it is completely uninspiring. Oh and one other thing, as you would probably expect the prices in the bars for drinks are a complete rip off, they all seem to have similar prices and expect to pay £4 for a pint of the local stuff and £7-10 for a cocktail.
So great hotel, not so great resort. If you want a relaxing week lazing around the hotel then it is highly recommended.

We stayed at the Minoa Palace Hotel for a 2 week holiday towards the end of August. Having read previous reviews we were slightly apprehensive of what to expect but all I can say is what a wonderful hotel with outstanding food!

Location
Minoa Palace is set by the sea in Plantanias, a nice area with plenty of restaurants, bars and little shops to stroll around. There is a mini market across the road from the hotel which is quite handy and very reasonable prices for every day essentials.

Hotel
The hotel is immaculate and very well maintained. We stayed in the old part of the hotel and loved it. We were so glad we were allocated here as opposed to the new section as the majority of facilities are located on this side and we believe it has more character and atmosphere. The staff are very friendly and helpful. There are two computers in the hotel with free internet access, a very small mini market and a lovely SPA!

Grounds
The grounds of the hotel are beautiful with lovely gardens and flowers to admire. The gardeners seemed to work extremely hard to keep them so nice. There are five pools and two open air jacuzzis’, always plenty of sun lounges with parasols to choose from so no need to rush down at dawn to reserve your bed with towels! Nice beach with free sun beds. Pool bar very nice, freshly squeezed orange juice was very refreshing!

Rooms
The rooms are very spacious and comfortable, fruit and wine are provided on arrival which is a nice touch .Our room over looked the mountains at the back of the hotel, very quiet and peaceful, was nice to sit out on the balcony with a glass of wine and enjoy! The room was very well equipped, lots of wardrobe space and drawers, no need to take a hairdryer as one is provided. Rooms our cleaned every day to a high standard with fresh towels (beach towels are also provided) Air conditioning is free of charge. The only down side to the room was we had a mini bar but no free fridge space for our own use, No tea and coffee making facilities and no iron.

Food
We ate in the main buffet restaurant every night, we did not see the point of going to sample the Italian or Fish restaurant as food was so good in there. I am a vegetarian and found the quality and wide variety of food amazing! Buffet food can become monotonous and boring but this certainly wasn’t the case here. Food was of a very high standard, all so fresh and constantly monitored by staff. Breakfast was also excellent with such a wide variety, fresh pancakes were delicious!

To conclude we had a wonderful time at this hotel and would certainly return in the future, Many thanks to Minoa Palace for making our stay so enjoyable.

Having read some of the reviews, not sure how we would fare.... all I can say is we had a fabulous week!!

We had a room in the Imperial Building with own pool (we were moved from an Imperial garden view room due to a problem) - WOW what a lovely surprise this added to our week.

The rooms were lovely, bed exceptionally comfortable, very clean and bathroom luxurious.

Food - as some have said if you can't find anything to eat then you obviously have issues with food. We couldn't fault any of the dishes on offer, the buffet is constantly refreshed. Wine was lovely too and they will keep the remainder of your bottle for next day if you ask. Breakfasts were fantastic too - greek yoghurt with dried fruit yummie!!!

Staff - all very friendly and helpful.

Having to pay for the safe not a problem its only 3 euros per day!!

Air conditioning - this you regulate yourself and you do not pay!!

All in all a great week away - wish we had booked for 2 weeks!! Hi Jill and David - hope the crocs hold out!!!!

5 star accommodation but definitely 3 star food. Salad, desserts and fresh fruit the saving grace.

Greek staff were very friendly and helpful but the non Greek staff could hardly be bothered to speak to you.

Our room in the Imperial building was spotless and very comfortable, outlook was over what was called the garden area, actually looked over the water feature to the car park of the Italian restaurant and a hire car cleaning area. Behind that was a school (closed for holiday).

Al la carte restaurant menu not inspiring and told we needed to book before 12.00 on day before you want to eat there and hotel give you Euro 10 voucher towards it if you are on half board. Only a couple of people appeared to be eating in there on the nights it was open. Italian restaurant on resort only open at lunchtimes and this in mid August!

On our three visits to the piano bar no pianist or come to that any customers in there.

Italian restaurant on the side of hotel above the car hire and the supermarket was extremely good and not as expensive as we thought it would be, highly recommended or perhaps we were just very hungry by then.

Platanius is a dump, think scruffy shops and restaurants that have very faded pictures outside. Highlight was the little train, this I would recommend.

Euro15 for a cab into Chania but Euro 19 if in a cab with a meter. To be honest not really worth the effort.

We returned to the Minoa Palace this summer in late July for two weeks following a very successful holiday there last year (rarely do I return to the same place - I have spent most of my life travelling 150 days around the world each year - and there are many hotels to which I certainly wouldn't return !). Stayed in the Imperial Building in a beautiful room with seaview - we had booked directly with the hotel and they gave us the exact room we wanted. From arrival and check-in by a smiling Errika...our holiday was wonderful. Dora and Alexandros serve you with a friendly smile over breakfast right by the beach - great people. Konstantina kept our room beautifully clean....and had the biggest smile at the hotel. Stelios and Maria were just as service minded in the beach bar ! Incredibly, the staff recognised us from the previous year... This is the hotel for everyone who has had a hard year's work and wants to relax for two weeks. The hotel is situated on the west end of Platinas...just out of the main centre - which in summer is a real tourist factory...but it doesn't matter, it's easy to get away from the crowds even if you don't want to drive....Crete has so much to offer and the Cretans (and east Europeans ) working in the industry there are so friendly. There is a lot to see on Crete - I first went there in 1973.....try the busses - several stop outside the hotel. This is the resort for everyone...families or couples, young or old. The waves can be big if the north wind is blowing....but then children can retreat to the many pools - anyway, I love big waves ! Try the traditional restaurant Kyano 100 mtrs east along the beach - very friendly and good food. Also try restauarnt Argentina in Kolumbari just along the coast further west (about 12 km) (seaside part of restaurant on balcony) for some lobster in spaghetti - you will meet an incredible waiter called Yanis - a clever young man with an amazing family - that's a long story). Thanks Minoa Palace - we had a wonderful holiday - would recommend you to anyone! Roger & Bente, Moss, Norway
