If you are looking for lodging that is unique, personal, and the opposite of the big corporate hotel experience, the Lithies is for you. Everyone associated with this property is warm, friendly, and above all extremely helpful. The reservation process was easy and efficient. Moreover, they were very understanding and flexible. A few days before we were set to leave, airports across Europe were closed due to the volcanic ash clouds and we were not sure whether we would make it to Greece. When I contacted them about our situation, they were willing to waive their cancellation policy if we could not make it. Fortunately the airspace opened up and we were able to go. And the Lithies did not disappoint.
Maria is the on-site manager of the Lithies and she is amazing. She welcomed us warmly and met our every need. One person in our party forgot her passport at our hotel in Crete. They couriered the passport to Santorini but it did not get delivered because it was May Day, a national holiday. Maria tracked down the person who managed the courier company and convinced him to search for the package containing the passport. He found the package among the packages that arrived on the ferry and were scheduled to be delivered the following week. Maria arranged for the package to be picked and delivered to the Lithies so that we had the passport that day which was key because we were scheduled to leave that evening.
The rooms themselves were great. Because we were a fairly large party we booked all three apartments and basically had the Lithies to ourselves. Each apartment was nicely furnished and it was great to have so much space to spread out and a kitchen to prepare a small meal if you are so inclined. They toiletries they provided rival the toiletries provided at 5 star hotels. The terraces were lovely and it was amazing experience to sit on the terrace and watch the amazing sunset.
Although breakfast was pretty simple, it was delicious and plentiful. And nothing beats waking up, walking out onto the terrace in your PJs, and gazing out to the caldera on a sunny morning to soak in the incredible scenery while eating breakfast. It's a perfect way to start a day.
Firostefani is a small, quiet town built into the cliffs with a small number of shops and restaurants. It's about a 10 minue walk to Fira. We highly recommend Mama's House. The food was delicious and Mama is quite a character.
If you book one of the apartments in the Lithies, you will not be disappointed. It will be a highlight of your trip. Everyone in our party loved it and loved Maria.
