Lithies Traditional Homes
Reviewed 13 May 2010

If you are looking for lodging that is unique, personal, and the opposite of the big corporate hotel experience, the Lithies is for you. Everyone associated with this property is warm, friendly, and above all extremely helpful. The reservation process was easy and efficient. Moreover, they were very understanding and flexible. A few days before we were set to leave, airports across Europe were closed due to the volcanic ash clouds and we were not sure whether we would make it to Greece. When I contacted them about our situation, they were willing to waive their cancellation policy if we could not make it. Fortunately the airspace opened up and we were able to go. And the Lithies did not disappoint.

Maria is the on-site manager of the Lithies and she is amazing. She welcomed us warmly and met our every need. One person in our party forgot her passport at our hotel in Crete. They couriered the passport to Santorini but it did not get delivered because it was May Day, a national holiday. Maria tracked down the person who managed the courier company and convinced him to search for the package containing the passport. He found the package among the packages that arrived on the ferry and were scheduled to be delivered the following week. Maria arranged for the package to be picked and delivered to the Lithies so that we had the passport that day which was key because we were scheduled to leave that evening.

The rooms themselves were great. Because we were a fairly large party we booked all three apartments and basically had the Lithies to ourselves. Each apartment was nicely furnished and it was great to have so much space to spread out and a kitchen to prepare a small meal if you are so inclined. They toiletries they provided rival the toiletries provided at 5 star hotels. The terraces were lovely and it was amazing experience to sit on the terrace and watch the amazing sunset.

Although breakfast was pretty simple, it was delicious and plentiful. And nothing beats waking up, walking out onto the terrace in your PJs, and gazing out to the caldera on a sunny morning to soak in the incredible scenery while eating breakfast. It's a perfect way to start a day.

Firostefani is a small, quiet town built into the cliffs with a small number of shops and restaurants. It's about a 10 minue walk to Fira. We highly recommend Mama's House. The food was delicious and Mama is quite a character.

If you book one of the apartments in the Lithies, you will not be disappointed. It will be a highlight of your trip. Everyone in our party loved it and loved Maria.

Our stay at the LIthies Homes was amazing, I would reccommend this place to anyone. I was travelling with my husband and my parents. We stayed in the Dione house, which has two seperate rooms, connected by a kitchen and commen space. It was very nicely decorated and had recently been redone. Everything was clean and very well kept up. The staff was so friendly and helpful, they were wonderful. The view is unreal, as is most places in Santorini. These homes are a little out of the main city of Thira, which is really nice! Not as noisy or busy with cruise boat tourists. It was a 10min walk into the main town, which is not bad at all... and you get great views along the way!

Breakfast was good and they brought wine and food while we watched the sunsets. They even helped carry all our bags up the stairs! They picked us up from the airport and dropped us off at the port, all for free. They made everything very easy, and were so nice to deal with.

The main town is so touristy, so it was nice to stay a little bit out of that. But still close enough where everything was accessable. We had a full kitchen and a washer...which was great to be able to wash our clothes during our trip!

I would stay there again in a heartbeat. I wish we could have stayed longer but we will be back! You will not be upset if you stay here!

Lithies deserves undoubtedly all merit it receives by fellow Tripadvisor contributors. The service is faultless, location is highly convenient to Fira-nonetheless tranquil- amenities abundant, homes spacious/ elegantly decorated and the view is a lifetime experience.
To begin with , booking process was smooth as it is entirely online; we also appreciated the information provided ( description of the home) prior to our arrival. Upon our arrival, we were warmly greeted by Maria , Lithies Manager, who awaited us to escort us to Lithies where she was assisted by a polite man who carried our bags.
At first glance of our home, we felt pampered as this cave house- villa "exuded" luxury. It was grand by any standard-spaciousness may not actually reflect how ample it was. Decorated in line with the Santorinian traditional architecture based in white washed walls, it was indeed calming to the eye while at the same time being cozy thanks to its cave like shape and the touches of warm colors on furniture. Romance was in the air as candles were lit and a bottle of wine was offered for special moments of gazing at Santorini's unique sunset.Beds are large and there are equally large sofa beds for relaxation. Maria also provided us with fluffy slippers, bathrobes and special batrhoom essentials as well as with useful tips to taste the island's cuisine in places she trusts. Breakfast fruits were fresh and varied - a real treat. Amenities such a washing machine, coffee maker, iron and ironing board ease daily life when you stay is long. Our home was kept immaculately clean on a daily basis.
Our private veranda was equally spacious and comfortable as it was furnished with chaises longues , tables and umbrellas. Combining privacy with Firostefani's serenity, our home allowed us to experience moments in heaven; the view to the volcano and Thirasia is unobstructed thus we felt surrounded by sea and sky only. The sunset is ultimately the most unique moment we remember fondly as the sun literally dived into the sea , a picture we felt was created solely at Firostefani.
I do dream of my next visit to Lithies and hope other travelers enjoy as much as we did. Many thanks to Lithies owners, management and staff.
