The small little restaurant in Firostefani said - traditional Greek food. But we found the food below average and overpriced. We ordered homemade pasta, Mousaka, and codfish salad. We have had much tastier version of all at much lesser price in smaller cities of Greece. The service was erratic and not suited to handle rush hours. Travel forums say that restaurants in Fira and Firastefani can be touristy and overpriced. This is definitely one of them.

Aktaoin is more of a traditional traverna than a Santorini spectacular view spot and as such, it needs to live by the quality of the food more than the quality of the view. The fact that Aktaoin has been around for 90 years speaks to the quality of the food and the fact that the third generation of the family runs the restaurant speaks to a special continuity that is rare today.

Located on a small square as you enter Firostefani along the Fira-Oia Road, Aktaion has a pleasant dining room and a very nice terrace looking out on the square. You can catch the view on your way in or out, but when you are there, it is all about the food. I don’t want to make it out to be more than it is, but we really liked the food. Greek standards to be sure, but with enough distinctive touches to make it special.

The mussels with fennel were not very fennel-y, but very good. The Greek Salad didn’t have special olive oil or olives, but was very fresh, had great tomatoes, and truly fine feta. As a main dish, the shrimp with spinach in ouzo caught our eye. Although the sauce was not ouzo-y, it had had nice sweet flavor that worked perfectly with the four very large shrimp (served with heads). At the waiter’s suggestion, I ordered the Lamb Roast and it was very good lamb; tender and in a flavorful sauce. I could have done without the feta over it (and I love feta), but that is a quibble. Excellent roasted lemon potatoes accompanied it to make the dish a fine rendition of one of my favorite Greek dishes.

I don’t want to oversell it. Aktaion is not the greatest restaurant in the universe or even our favorite on Santorini, but the combination of the fine food, the family story, and the low key setting make it very much worth a visit.
