Agali Houses is a beautiful, super-friendly and very comfortable hotel with a stunning views of the caldera from every room! Upon check-in, we were given a free upgrade to a beautiful suite with a private patio from which we watched the sunset every night. The location in Firostefani is great too. It's within walking distance to Fira but far enough for a more tranquil experience. The only downside to the hotel is the steps. There are over 50 steps from the street level to the hotel and then there were over 50 more from the gates of the hotel to our room. It's not bad if you're relatively fit and a good sport. If you have any trouble walking or taking stairs, I would avoid this hotel. Overall, I would definitely recommend Agali Houses for anyone who wants a beautiful hotel experience.

this is one of the best hotels I've ever been to. Its very clean and new with an absolutely breathtaking view of the see and the volcano. The hotel is on a clif and you will be enjoying the breathtaking view of the sea from anywhere in the hotel. There are 80 steps to the hotel but its worth every step (dont worry someone will carry your bags). We stayed 3 nights and we didnt want to leave. the breakfast was good in very nice area watching the amazing view. Location of the hotel is more than perfect. Fira(main town) is very close with less than 10 mints walk. the hotel is far from the noise of Fira but yet very close to the noise. its very safe to walk at night after a night out.People at the hotel are very nice and relaxing but you can walk to Fira for a crazy night and walk back.

Cons: No room service. you have to get what you want from the front desk but the room is cleaned very nicely everyday.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the view, location and position is among the best on the island. There is a nice pool and lovely breakfast seating area, again with among the best views on the island! After spending some time at Manos Small World, we moved to Agali Houses (due to availability).

Pros:
- Beautifully furnished rooms, and beautiful white wash private balconies available with some rooms
- Complimentary wine and yummy taffy sweets
- Private deck chairs and table and chairs
- Stunning views you will never tire of!
- Some rooms have a useful kitchenette
- Great radio / CD player
- Nice pool with shade and sun and deck chairs
- Near a square with nice cafes, and where all tours pick up from
- 18-20 Euros for a taxi to/from the airport
Very friendly welcoming and helpful staff

Cons:
- Can hear radios/talking from adjoining houses/bathrooms
- Very weak/ non functioning wifi in all room below the pool and inconsistent wifi in other areas
- Breakfast is processed and not made freshly on site, no plunger coffee etc
- Beds are small and average comfort
- Bathroom had poor light and was small, with no shower curtain to catch wayward water (doesn't really matter but worth noting for some)
- Rooms are more compact than nearby hotel Manos Small World but still lovely and most of your time will be spent outside.

See below for my detailed Santorini 'must do' list after a lot of research and a week in wonderful Santorini!

PACIFIC GEM's SANTORINI TIPS

Accommodation Tips: when looking for a relaxing, classy hotel with white wash balcony and vista out to the caldera, a bit out of Fira (Thira) but not too far - choose Agali Houses or Manos Small World (the best in their price range) (I stayed at both which are next to each other, and have reviewed both, both are wonderful, why not spend half your stay in one, and half in the other?!). Alternatively, if your budget is higher, and/or you are on honeymoon, I'd suggest checking out nearby Imerovigli which is a bit more exclusive, quiet and up market.

Activity Tips: (you would need a 7-10 days to do all this at a holiday pace and have possibly the best holiday you've ever had)

Santorini Sailing Tips: not all sail trips are the same! Jump on the Dream Catcher sunset catarmaran sail trip starting from Oia and finishing in the south port (2.30pm-8pm) (we chose this one as while it was more costly, it was a divine stable boat, and capped guest numbers to around 30 guests allowing wonderful room to lie in the sun or be in the shade of the canopy, the crew were great fun, knowledgable and mostly local, and the food was divine!), We went on the sunset sail, which visited the hot springs and red beach where we swam in torquoise waters. Dreamy. This is the same boat the TV crews hired from the US. Book with them a few days ahead at their office.

Beach Tips: for a bit of beach lazing, eating and deck chair relaxing best picks would be Perissa and Kamari (also for open air cinema!) and/or ride your 4 wheeler or car south and explore red beach, white beach and black beach (a ferry boat will take you between them!

Hiking Tips: Take a hike in an uninhabited part of the islands and from Fira to Oia, There are dedicated websites for Santorini walks for outdoorsy types (highly recommended). Also ensure you wander down the road below Oia to Amoudi Bay (15-30mins) and follow the seawall to the end for the best swimming on the island then come back to the wharf for a meal!

Getting about Tips: hire a quad bike (wear a helmet!) or a small car to fully explore the island and beaches! Hire rates are cheap, but be aware as there's lots of bingles! Local buses are good too, but depending where you are heading you may be waiting a while to get on one.

Sunset Tips: see a sunset with a picnic from Skaros rock near (15-20mins walk north from Firostefani), or anywhere on the walk from Fira to Oia (all on your own with amzing view). Also see a sunset from the Light house of Acrotiri (south coast). You will love it!

Sunrise Tips: Try to see from Pyrgos the sun rise from the Anafi island, both are much more beautiful than the touristic sunset in Oia.

Tips for Greek Ruins: Visit the ancient Thira in the Messa Vouno near Kamari for a view in the aegean and the island of Anafi.

Music Tips: soak up some live music at the beachfront of Perissa at Yazz or Soul bar

Tips for seeing the real Greece! Leave Fira behind and visit the village of Pyrgos, Vothonas for outstanding architecture form the Venecians. Gorge yourself at a traditional taverna in Akrotiri, your table on a pier that juts out into the flat Aegean sea. Go looking for old cave houses and beautiful pottery in Emporio. Find secret beaches near the airport. Ride along roads for miles without seeing another person. Go see traditional tavernas in Megalochori and Vlychada where the food is excellent and moderately priced.

Photography Tour: Take your point-and-shoot or SLR camera for a 5hr photography course and take home postcard shots to wow your friends and improve your skills (we loved this tour with Olaf plus it's not just for photos but a tour for local history insights and amazing secret photo vantage points!). Costly but entirely worth it!

• If you’re outdoors inclined, spent a half day sea kayaking through some caves and past the southern beaches!

Enjoy your trip!

Room Tip: Than more your budget the better/bigger your room. All views from all rooms are fantastic! Wifi does...

We were a honeymoon couple from India who stayed in Agali Houses for 01 night. We would like to make a special mention of the lady at the reception who was so warm & helpful all the times. The entire staff whom we met in our trip there was so very courteous all the time, and answered and helped us for all the requests that we'd made. We were given a very warm & smiling treatment throughout our stay in the hotel.

We got to stay in a beautiful suite (a huge bedroom with an adjoined kitchen area, bathroom & a private gallery). The room were very comfortable and well furnished with its traditional decor. The view it offered was amazing... we had our balcony and the entire caldera & volcano island seen from there. Needless to say, evening and night times in Santorini are very spectacular, and this hotel's location ensured that we don't miss on watching it by sitting in the couch sipping drinks.

We highly recommend this hotel for stay in Santorini as we felt that we got one of the best hospitality here and felt so very comfortable with the staff. As for us, we are quite positive that we will have one more trip to Greece, Santorini & Agali Houses...!!

From the moment we arrived we realised we'd made a great choice! We were met at the airport by a transfer organised by the hotel, then met by a strong porter to carry our cases down 2 flights of steps (which in Santorini is not many at all believe me). Then at reception we were greeted by a very friendly, helpful lady who explained everything we needed to know and more. Then really surprised us by upgrading us to a fab junior suite with outdoor jacuzzi. The staff at the hotel are very polite, friendly and very helpful. The rooms are very clean all with great views over the caldera. We had a very relaxing time, but when we did want to leave our peaceful terrace to hire a car or book taxis, the staff at reception were happy to arrange them.
Firastefani is small but has some lovely restaurants - Vanilia, Remos and Mylos. Plus it's only 15 mins into Fira - there are 3 ways - road, along the coastal path which is slightly longer and the path that runs straight from Firastefani Square.

Agali Houses are a classic Santorini experience. It looks like they used to be actual homes (each staircase down the cliffside has a street name) and so they are quite spacious by European hotel standards. We stayed in a Studio Sea View, and it was amazing. Little front room and kitchenette, then a back bedroom and large bathroom. Our semi-private balcony opened up to an incredible view of the caldera.

Be prepared to get some exercise going to and from the hotel, as they are located a good ways down the cliff. The porter will meet you, hoist your bags like they are nothing, and make you feel like a ridiculous fat tourist by scampering up and down some couple of hundred steps with your luggage. The hotel staff meet you with fresh juice and walk you down (and down, and down) to your room where you'll get a nice half-bottle of wine.

The wi-fi extends to the rooms in theory but not in practice (at least, not for us), so you'll just have more time to gaze at the sea. Breakfasts are very nice, with table service. Their pool area is lovely (and where the wi-fi is strongest, hilariously). The whole hotel is gloriously quiet and peaceful.

We loved it and would go again in a heartbeat, assuming we spend some time saving up first. You definitely get what you pay for here.

That's the number of steps to our very nice room (#116) from the main road or boardwalk to Fira. A fabulous balcony very close to the swimming pool only 10 steps away, however without the customers being able to see us. My take is that most room and balcony offer privacy.
You get what you pay for with nice, attentive and dedicated staff, view to dream the day away and enjoy a good cocktail, good breakfast on a fabulous terrace and a nice and quiet room. We did Dana Villas in 2007, also very nice, but preferred Agali with a lower price as a bonus.
Trip Advisor reviews helped our choice and overall found them accurate. Many many photos to remember our 3 nights vacation.
