“Wonderful, perfect, beautiful gem”
Reviewed 21 August 2014

We stayed at the Agali Houses for two nights in August. Beautiful hotel and spectacular views. Clean, spacious rooms with incredibly private terraces. We loved everything about this hotel, except the nearly two hundred steps we had to climb from our suite to the main road. We adapted to this but it made it a bit difficult to go back and forth to the hotel. The pool was beautiful, clean and relaxing. This place is a gem!

This is a bit of a mixed review. If I could, I would give this hotel two separate marks - 3 stars for our room and 4 stars for the rest of the hotel. Since so many others have commented on the general loveliness of the majority of this hotel, I will mainly speak about how disappointed we were in the room we were given.

My husband and I have been on a round the world trip for 3 months, and Santorini was the place we saved our pennies for. When booking 8 months prior, I spent weeks trawling the net and TA for the most modern place we could afford, with the best possible view (a lot of Santorini hotels are quite dated). We settled for Agali Houses. We booked the relatively expensive 'Superior Sea View Room' and were expecting a beautiful modern-style apartment as per the photos online and on TA. Surprisingly what we actually got given was an old fashioned room in dire need of a do-up. To help inform future guests in their decision to stay here, I have uploaded my own photos to more accurately show the type of room(s) you may also potentially end up with.

Our room was in a 'traditional Greek' style as the receptionist liked to call it, but to us it just seemed dated. She assured us we weren't the only ones with an older style room like this, but from what we could gather peering into other peoples properties, it felt like we definitely had the oldest room.

We also had large pipes running through our room hidden (or so they thought) behind the wardrobe. We were confused for a while wondering what the intermittent and annoyingly loud waterfall noises were in our room. Every time someone else in the rooms around us went to the toilet or showered, we heard about it...even in the middle of the night we were often woken up to someone flushing the loo somewhere else in the resort. Apparently this is true of all rooms (the receptionist told us) due to the nature of the hillside location, although I haven't seen anyone else complain about it yet on these reviews, so it must have been particularly bad in our room at the bottom of the property.

The worst thing was the cave-like bathroom. SO appallingly dark that even with all the lights on, I could not even see to shave my legs, put on makeup or do anything productive in there. It was especially impossible at night! Shower was not great either and especially weak in the morning when everyone else in the resort is showering too.

I will be fair and say there were a lot of lovely aspects to the room we got given: immaculately clean, incredible view, very private beautiful balcony, lovely bright bedroom, quietest room at the bottom of the property, large spacious living room and kitchenette.

And other than our room, the hotel itself is absolutely beautiful too and quite modern in style as other reviewers have said. Yes the breakfasts were sparse and boring and yes there is a lot of steps to walk up and down from the main street (188 to our room)...but these things didn't bother us too much. Overall it is a nice place. We just did not like our room.

If you are looking for a modern style room in Santorini (as we were), my advice is to look very, very closely at all the photos before booking here. We came in peak season so there wasn't the option to be moved to another room. Receptionist/Manager was totally unapologetic and when we complained further she became quite hostile which we did NOT appreciate. So unprofessional. Our complaints were completely legitimate - a hotel is responsible for accurately portraying on its website the rooms it offers. Anything less is deceptive and borders on false advertising. I am trying to amend that by contributing some photos that may help you in your decision as to whether to book at Agali. As for us, our accommodation experience soured an otherwise amazing trip to Santorini...we won't be be back to Agali Houses.

My wife and I stayed here for 10nights in June. We booked into the honeymoon suite with a hot tub on the terrace. As we were getting married on the island we needed a bigger suite for my wife and her 8 bridesmaids to get ready in on the day.

Our room was absolutely spot on.... Sat in our hot tub watching the views and the sun set. Can't get better then that.. Only down side was that sometimes the hot tub could of been a few degrees warmer at night.

The hotel is well looked after. It's down some steps, there is a porter who helps you up and down with your luggage.

The hotel is about a 15minutes walk from the centre of Fira if you follow the main road or about 20minutes taking in the sites of the coastal walk.

Overall what an amazing stay..... And an amazing island to get married.

Hopefully be back on our anniversary one year.

We had an amazing time at Agali Houses; we chose this hotel as we were looking for a totally private, private pool suite in Santorini. This is actually very difficult to find due to the location of the hotels on the cliff.
In this hotel, going to your room you can see every guest on their private terrace, which is something to bear in mind if you are looking for privacy.
However the privacy in the private pool Sunset Suite is great - there is only one corner where people MIGHT see you.
The private pool is beautiful and a great size and the views are out of this world.
Firostefani is a lovely quiet area which I prefer to the louder Fira, but only 10 minutes walk if that is what you prefer. There are great restaurants at the top of the hotel and shops nearby.
The staff are happy to help with recomendations on what to do etc and are always polite.
Breakfast and the lady serving breakfast were lovely however the breakfast is very basic and unvaried.
Another thing is that they do not provide room service, even if you need something like an Iron you have to pick it up yourself, which when you are spending thousands on accomodation, you would expect to not have these problems..
There are ALOT of steps to climb up so would not advise for anyone with health issues..

All in all a lovely stay in one of the most beautiful parts of the world!

Room Tip: Sunset suite for private pool and privacy

We stayed in the Sunset Suite for our honeymoon. What can I say...it was heaven!

- The view from our suite was fantastic - beautiful sunset every evening
- Very clean
- Very large suite, includes a mini kitchen and sitting area. The decor of the suit was very tasteful.
- Huge bathroom (could do with better lighting though)
- nice outdoor patio furniture
- lovely clean pool.
- very private
- friendly staff
- the hotel offers a good breakfast
- the sunset suite is the ultimate place for a romantic getaway

Yes there are stairs and lots of them but this suite is so lovely its worth every drop of sweat you make for it.

Nothing bad to say except recommendations for the managment:
More shade area or umbrellas need to be put on the breakfast patio. Only 3-4 tables get shade and the rest remain in the strong sun which is not so nice.

Recommendations:
- Its about a 10 min walk to Fira main center
- Fira cafes, bars and restaurants are not cheap and mostly overpriced. Take the bus and go to one of the outter town supermarkets. There is a Lidls just east of Fira. Shop your dinner and have it every evening as you watch the sunset on your balcony
- Take a boat tour to the Volcano, Hot Springs, and watch the sunset. We took the Thalassa boat tour and recommend it. The hotel can help you with this.
- We booked a car with Budget rentals (just down the road from the hotel). It was 40 Euros with Full Insurance per day.

We plan to visit again and will stay at the Sunset Suite. A very well managed hotel and highly recommended to all.

Room Tip: Book the Sunset Suite. No other room compares to this.

We only stayed at the Agali Houses for 1 night. We stayed at Homeric Poems for 4 nights and moved to Agali for our last night due to a last minute change in travel plans. Boy do I wish we had stayed here the entire time. The property was unreal - the room, the pool, the view, the service. I could go on and on. On 2nd thought, perhaps it was for the best we didn't stay here the whole time, I have a feeling we would have seen a whole lot less of the island if we had. We wouldn't have wanted to leave the hotel! 10-15 minute walk to Fira, free wifi and breakfast. 18 euro to airport, very reasonable. Loved this property and our stay here.

Throw all of the American notions about what a hotel is like out. Agali House is built into a cliff and thus it is comprised of several levels connected by stairs. You will climb lots and lots of stairs, but that's just the way it goes. First the Good: Agali Houses is beautiful from an architectural and design standpoint. The colors, the design just makes you feel good. The pool seemed small to us, but turns out, it is one of the bigger pools. Each room is like it's own condo and you have your own patio. The location is excellent. It's far enough way from the hub of town (the bus terminal is twenty minutes away) but close enough to get to everything. Also, some of the best restaurants in town are at the top of the steps. Also, the bus stop to Oia is right at the top, as well. It was also very quiet. The bad: Breakfast is not great. There is a small selection to choose from, and the hostess brings you a basket of breads and meats. I saw a lot of it go to waste. Seems to me, it would be more cost effective and convenient to have a full buffet like other hotels with more variety in cereals, fruit, etc. While it seems most rooms are awesome, ours wasn't and it wasn't what I was booked. We were told we were "upgraded" to an apartment, but when I saw another room that was what I had originally booked, I felt like it was more of a downgrade. We didn't need a kitchenette, and it was so far away from the pool, etc. It had a funky smell. Many of the rooms had shade covers over the patio, ours didn't, and it was very hot and made it uncomfortable to hang out on the patio. The curtains don't really block out the sun in the morning. Finally, our room did not have a shower. After a long day on the beach, etc, it would be nice to take a shower, but there was just a sprayer in the tub. When I asked to change rooms, I was told they were fully booked, but it was still only 2 pm in the afternoon. Ultimately, I think this is a nice place, we just had an off experience.
