“Would not go again”
Reviewed 24 July 2008

We have been twice to the Smaragdi - the first time was really lovely - the daughter Maria is so welcoming. However the mother is a different story - we had a problem with the air conditioning - she tried to charge us £70 for air conditioning even though we had not used it at all and would not give in until her daughter stepped in - we eventually didn't pay but it left a really bad taste in our mouths as we are not dishonest people and we felt very hurt.

Apart from that the Smaragdi is very clean and in a great location for the beach. It's a shame the owners are not more hospitable.

My partner and i had a fantastic stay at the Smaragdi Apartments at the begining of May 2007. The family who run the property couldn't do more to make your stay fantastic.

We stayed in a tiny studio apartment & were shocked at the size of if when we first entered, but with the thoughts that we don't go on holiday to spend time in our apartment really enjoyed our stay. The studio although small was basic but clean (which is all we expected - i tend to find some poeple expect too much from there self catering accommodation & end up spoiling there own holiday) & equiped with the essentials needed for a self catering holiday.

The owners of the property were extreamly friendly & very helpful. We experienced a 12hour delay on our rturn flight due to air traffic control strike & were given our apartment to stay in at no extra charge until we were picked up.

The Apartments are a nice walk from the centre and within about 10minuted you begin to come to bars & restaurants on the sea front.

Perrissa itself was lovely, really nice bars & restaurants for a nice relaxing holiday - although things were only just starting to open when we arrived as the season only begins in May.

Hiring a car is a must as the island is so beautiful & can be explored in a day. We drove to Fira & Oia to see the famous sunsets & checked into a BB in Fira for the night (really cheap & excellent hotel). Again fantastic restaurants & bars in Fira & Oia although more expensive than Perissa but well worth it for the views!

Overall we thoroughly enjoyed Santorini & will definatly return.

We went to santorini as a friend was getting married out there and what a lovely place it is the scenery is breathtaking.
We stayed at the Smargadi appartments which were very nice the gardens and pool area are very clean and there are plenty of sunbeds to choose from. The rooms were cleaned and linen /towels changed every other day. Cleaners did not really smile or talk much. Maria and her husband made eveyone feel welcome, but her parents who own the appartments were a bit miserable. The only draw back was that we stayed in room 14 and the key did not work if the door was locked, so although we were promised a new key we had to leave the door unlocked all week (they said the door was new, but other holiday makers who have been there before said that the door has not locked for years). Our room had a mezzanine bedroom which meant that we could not stand up in it. Other than that we would gladly go back again. The appartments are about 7/10 mins walked away from the main part of perrissa

This was our second time on the island of Santorini. Both times we have stayed in or around Perissa. This part of the island makes for a great base and is quieter than other parts.
We picked Smaragdi Hotel for 2 reasons. One the price and two it has a good star rating. we were definately not disappointed. Right from the first day we and all other guests were made to feel welcome. Stamos the Manager is a complete nut but a gem. The whole family have worked hard to make Smaragdi one of the best self catering accomodations on the island. The rooms are good sized and clean with air con if you need it. The rooms are cleaned and towels and bed linen changed every other day. The pool area is great with plenty of sun loungers and chairs and tables. The pool is always clean but with all pools in Greece are warmed by the sun so in the early part of the season a little cold but refreshing after a day in the sun. The bar area is comfortable with the option of being inside or out. All drinks are delivered to your table usually with the Stamos wit. The food is good whether it be breakfast lunch or dinner. The only down side to the food is that the breakfast is the same every day. The Smaragdi is good for kids with a play area and gated entrances to keep them in. The pool goes from 1m to 2.5m. The beach is at the end of the road 25m away. A must on the island is to get out and about. If you go off season try taking a dusty track to the beach and if you are lucky you will find a beach of your own. Take a look down small roads and pathways and you will find the delights of the island. We spent our holiday last year in the Dominican Republic and i have to say that i would pick Santorini and the Smaragdi any day. The people are great and the weather is great from May to October. Main tips are... Get involed when at the apartments and you will be looked after and rewarded with the great Greek wit by the whole family and get out and about look further than what you think is a dead end and you will be rewarded every time.
Treat yourself one day for lunch or dinner and spend it in Thira or Oia over looking the Caldera. Its has got to be 8th wonder of the world.

Having just read the reviews of the Smaragdi Hotel on this site, I thought I’d add my own thoughts. I’ve been coming here; often twice a year, since 1999 and I’ve never had any problems. There are many other people who also come back to the Smaragdi year after year so they must be doing something right.

Although listed in the Kosmar brochure as being in Perissa, the hotel itself is more towards the Perivolos end of the resort which is much quieter and set back from the beach road by about 200 yards. The walk into Perissa itself will take about 10 to 15 minutes although there are plenty of bars, coffee shops and restaurants in either direction along the beach road to help you on your way.

The hotel is totally family owned and run by Dimitris, Smaragda (a queen amongst women), Maria and Stamos and they really do make you feel at home. Smaragda speaks very good English as do Maria and Stamos who look after the pool and bar areas. If you do have a problem, they will do everything they can to sort it out for you.

A word of warning - if you’re coming with Kosmar, please note that the views of the hotel in the brochure are NOT representative of the rooms that they use - the Kosmar rooms are set at the back and the sides of the main complex. Some people have complained about the size and location of the rooms but in my opinion these complaints are unwarranted. The rooms are allocated by the Kosmar reps, not the hotel. If you are not happy with the room that’s been allocated to you, it may be possible to take another room if there are any available but be aware that you might have to pay extra – speak to Smaragda about this. In my opinion, if you’re on holiday you’re not likely to spend a great deal of time in your room other than sleeping and getting dressed. The rooms are clean and comfortable with constant hot water (a bonus), TV (BBC World, BBC Prime and Greek channels), direct dial telephone and ceiling fans with air conditioning available for a small daily cost. They are also serviced every other day when the towels and bedding are changed. Quite frankly, what more do you need!

The pool area is where most of the action happens. There is a very well stocked bar, open every day from about 11am with draught Greek beer and bottled English beers together with all of the usual stuff you’d expect. There is an extensive menu of snacks and main meals, all excellent quality and well worth the money. They will often have daily specials available too. If you’ve had a busy day and can’t raise the energy to walk to one of the many local restaurants, the food here is just as good and a lot cheaper.

Perissa itself (the main resort) is about 10 to 15 minutes walk away and whilst the main street can get busy at night, it’s hardly the ‘mini San Antonio’ another reviewer mentioned. If it ever gets to that stage, I’ll stop going back! There are plenty of bars and restaurants and you’ll soon get to know which ones are better than others – ask the people at the hotel about the places they recommend. Restaurants that I would personally recommend are God’s Garden (near the Water Park in Perissa), Odyssey (Tito, the chef, serves some of the best food on the island, a little more expensive, but well worth it for a special treat) and the Lava restaurant on the beach road, which serves the most authentic Greek food you’re likely to get in Perissa. For before or after dinner drinks, go to Dorians Bar on the main street where you’ll get delicious cocktails in a lovely setting. This is one of the longest established bars in Perissa, having been around for over 20 years.

To see the volcano and caldera, you’ll need to go the west coast of the island and the main towns, Thira (Fira) or Ia (Oia). The first view of the volcano from the cliffs in Thira is just amazing but be wary of nipping into one of the many cafes looking directly over to it – they are very expensive and you will pay through the nose for drinks and food. If there are American cruise ships in, it will be very busy and quite possibly even a little more expensive.

Ia is famous for the sunset but to be honest, you can see it just as well in Thira or on the road to Akrotiri where the volcanic excavations are taking place.

In my opinion, Santorini is not particularly child friendly so if you must take them, be prepared to spend a lot of time trying to keep them amused. There are no kids clubs or anything like that and in Perissa the only real kid’s facility other than the beach or hotel pool is the Water Park.

All in all, the Smaragdi is an ideal place for a quiet, relaxing holiday. If it’s all night bars and clubs you’re after, please go somewhere else.
