“Not for the 'low" season!”
Reviewed 5 January 2010

I don't recommend Mango Rooms to anyone wanting low season accomodation in Rhodes old town.
We stayed for 5 nights in late December, having found Mango Rooms on the Internet. We weren't told when our booking was confirmed that the restaurant and bar were closed and that the Internet was unavailable.

We must have had the worst room available. It was extremely damp, so handwashing and used towels didn't dry. When we arrived, the hot water wasn't turned on for us, so we had cold showers until the next evening - not nice in December. We were allocated a small towel each and had to ask for fresh ones after two days. The bathroom was perpetually damp, with one of those showers above the toilet. The worst thing about it was the way the wet shower curtain wrapped itself around us as we tried to move around in the very confined area. The shower water didn't drain away properly, so we got wet feet when we used the toilet.

Each night when we got into bed, the bed-linen felt wet and clammy. The mattress was hard too - a definite no-no for anyone with hip discomfort.

We expected to be able to pay by credit card as we had been asked for our credit card number when the booking was confirmed. However, the morning we left, we found out that the manager's father (aged 80 plus and with no English) didn't know how to work the credit card machine and would only accept cash. Of course, we didn't have that much cash on us, so my husband had to go and find an ATM some distance away. The manager we'd originally booked with wasn't living on-site.

The only ray of sunshine was the 'Walk Inn' almost next door, a very friendly little bar where you could get large cheap and cheerful evening meals. They also have a stack of paperbacks available for borrowing.

Maybe the Mango Rooms are different in the summer. I don't think the place is at all suitable for winter guests.

Basic, small, but clean rooms. Friendly family that made us welcome. Internet use (6 terminals) if you have a drink in the bar downstairs, very handy!
Don't expect any luxury, although you do get a tv, fridge & haidryer in the room. The only drawback is the shower that soaks everything, not a problem in summer, but took a while for things to dry as we were there at the end of October. Only one smallish towel provided per person, so make sure you have a larger one with you!
If you're on a budget, want the internet access & a location on a small historic square tucked away in the back streets this place is perfect!
There is a small roof garden with a view over the old town.

Mango Rooms can be hard to find but just ask at any cafe or store in the Old Town and they will be able to direct you. The rooms are clean and quiet- even with a bar downstairs. Host Dimitrios is most welcoming and helpful.

The best thing about this place is the location - right in the heart of the old Rhodes town. Free wi-fi but to use the internet cafe you have to pay or buy a drink. Rooms were basic but had fridges (and TV I think!). The shower toilet combination meant that everything got wet! I think that this is a pretty standard configuration in Greece.

Do plan to stay at Mango Rooms during your visit. I found it on a hostel booking website and was enchanted with this place. I received a warm reception from the proprietors and I was grateful to have such a nice room to crash in. I was in room #23 and it had a lovely view of a mosque and a distant clocktower. The rooms and cafe were very well cared for and I made good use of the free wi-fi. Since food is so expensive here on the island, I was glad to have a fridge in the room and several markets nearby (one just across the courtyard) to buy food and wine. The cafe' downstairs offered a variety of beverages and was cool and relaxing to hang out in. If I return to Rhodes, I will most assuredly be staying here again. A home away from home...

  • Liked — The cafe' and rooms were relaxing and very enjoyable.
  • Disliked — The toilet/shower was a new one for me...but no big deal, total non-issue.

It is right in the centre of old town - which is great for nightlife and eating out but means youhave to walk about 20 mins to the beach. Contrary to other reviews - taxi's willpick you up and drop you off close to the hostel. The rooms are spacious and have great air con. The only drawback is the shower is above the toilet (no separate shower) so the toilet and bathroom floor get wet (and there are no spare towels given to dry them off after). It wasn't that bad cos it was pretty clean..
