I have Tripadvisor to thank for telling me about this place. We visited on our first day in Rhodes and made regular return visits. After the roasting hot, crowded streets Socratous Garden is an oasis of calm, with comfortable seating, lots of mature trees to provide shade and running water to provide a lovely background sound. Some people might consider the piped Greek music a bit naff but it wasn't intrusive and we thought it added to the atmosphere - it was far better to listen to than the dreadful squeeze boxes of the Rumanian beggar kids elsewhere in the old town. The service was very good and most of the waiters could communicate in English, French and Russian. The food was good, the beer was cold. Instead of Mythos beer which is available everywhere, try draught Zythos Vap which is good and seems to be a well-kept secret; it's rarely advertised but I preferred it to Mythos.
The one thing that really did surprise me about Socratous Garden was that they didn't have anybody stationed on the street outside touting for business. I'd never have known that it existedt without the help of Tripadvisor and Google Earth and I'm sure they would get a lot more visitors if they had somebody outside. Every time we visited there were lots of empty tables, which was a big contrast to the crowded street cafes and bars. I'm not complaining about this because I loathe crowded places! It's located towards the top end of Socratous Street on the right as you head uphill.
The toilets were clean every time we visited (being a bloke I never used to pay much attention to toilets but Mrs DIGR says I should) and they had all the stuff that you don't realise you need until it's not there, like locks on the doors, toilet paper and soap.
I really can't imagine why anybody could fail to like this place but I see that a few reviewers haven't enjoyed it as much as we did. Somebody has said it's a bit "touristy". Well it's a restaurant which caters for tourists, so what can you expect?
Try it, you won't be disappointed.
