Review of Mistagoyia Taverna - CLOSED

This restaurant looked so nice! Away from the crowd, in a small alley, just a view tables, light music. Their signboard promised fresh fish and all house made food.
When we picked our table, the shouting of the waiter should have warned us.

When we got the menu, the first thing I noticed were the prices. Definitely higher than all the other restaurants we ate at. But, we hoped that the food would make up for that.
When we got our first portions of food, we were surprised by how small they were. Never had these small portions and certainly not for a price like this. The quality of the food was poor.
Meanwhile the waiter was argueing with customers behind us about a bill to be paid. It seemed that they were charged more than they ordered. After these customers left, the waiter got agressive in such a way that he was calling them names, everyone could 'enjoy' this. Trying to calm him down by saying that this was rude in front of your customers, was useless. He just kept cursing and pointing at a review of Lonely Planet on his wall, and stating that he knew maffia all around the world.
After some more dishes being served at our table we couldn't stand it anymore. No house made dolmades, no fresh Symi shrimps, but just big peeled shrimps from a freezer and the size of this dish in comparison with the price they charged for it.... Unacceptable! Nothing like the review of Lonely Planet on their wall or their promises about fresh fish and all house made dishes. So we choose to leave.
At that point the waiter was now threatening us with maffia, while we were still paying the bill. A bill by the way, that was not the same as prices on the menu.

Be warned.

As previously stated, looks a sweet place and waiter tries his best to entice you in - he then talks so much that the order is incorrect with items he is doing his best to up-sell. 2 tables had arguments over their bills as we were eating and then were threatened by him shouting after them he was in the mafia. We were subsequently charged for things we hadn't ordered, bottles of water and bread; which were deducted without any fuss. Also, the bill was handwritten and added up incorrectly. Beware! (food mediocre) Such a shame, as restaurants in Greece are so much better than this.

We were deeply disappointed with this taverna. The waiter worked hard to entice us in, it's situated in a pleasant cobbled alley off the main drag and looked pleasing so we gave it a go. The waiter was friendly but over attentive and over persuasive in that he wanted to serve the food he wanted us to have (some rather expensive fish) rather than what we actually wanted. However, we finally ordered the dishes we wanted and, like previous reviewer, received over-priced water we hadn't ordered with our wine. We both ordered Moussaka which, when it arrived, was part of a large Meze-type platter that we certainly hadn't ordered and which turned out to be a very expensive platter! Sadly the food was nothing to shout about. Like Tim H's review below, we too received a bill far higher than we expected. No matter how we tried to work it out, we had been charged at least 10 Euros too much. We tried to attract the waiter's attention to get it put right, but he had enticed a party of 6 in and studiously ignored us. We gave up, paid up and left. We had ventured out without realising we had limited Euros with us and should have left as soon as the waiter said they didn't take cards. One other point, we too were shown the Lonely Planet and AA supposed recommendations but I have failed to find either on their websites so question validity?

The bill was far higher than we expected. We were charged 2 euros each for 500ml bottles of water which we didn't ask for.
The waiter was quite persuasive and friendly, he told us all about how good the food was and showed us a board with some Lonely Planet article on it. There was only one vegetarian main course on the menu but when we ordered he said "No" and pointed to the starters, by this point we'd already been brought the wine. So I ordered 2 starters and garlic bread as a main course, he siad they'd be big but were presented as starters. The grilled aubergine tasted overly smokey.
There were no extras - no slices of fruit or ouzo presented with the bill.

This restaurant seemed to have a very nice atmosphere when we walked by. It got bad from there.
Menu was way overpriced but we thought perhaps this meant something good- like this would be an excellent experience. It wasn't.
Food was not good. Service was slow and indifferent. In fact it was terrible. Our food was not fresh. We were charged 14 euro for 1 prawn that was rotten and indelible. This is the worst experience we had on our entire trip by far. We fed a group of 12 for far less money and much better food at other places. Avoid!!!!
