Cava d'Oro Hotel
Ranked #75 of 126 Hotels in Rhodes Town
Reviewed 28 April 2011

The Cava D’ Oro hotel strives to be quaint, convenient and reasonably priced. It succeeds, but does not exceed. We asked for a first floor room in the main hotel because previous guests did not like the annex or the steep steps in the main building. Our punishment was lots of traffic and noise on the first floor, front side. The owner, Brigid, met our every request, but never with a smile and never without having made us feel that she was going out of her way to do so. (We asked for extra pillows. She said she would have to check the other rooms to see if she had any. My God, this is a hotel! Did they have only one pillow per guest? We got our pillows within the hour.) On the positive side, the rooms were clean, the breakfast ample, parking convenient and the price reasonable for what we got. On the negative side, there was no hot water the first night. The owners had their family in for the Easter holiday and they were quite noisy. The telephone in our room did not work at all. The TV was not picking up all the available stations. (Brigid said the guests always messed up the settings and she did not know how to correct it. We figured it out in about an hour.) My wife ordered a glass of wine on our first night. The price was only 1.50 Euro for a small glass, but the wine had been open so long that it was not drinkable. Later we saw another 1.5-liter bottle of the same wine in a grocery for three Euros. The breakfast buffet had a reasonable selection for the size of the hotel, but many of the offerings were quite ordinary. As with almost everything else, the breakfast was OK, but nothing knocked you off your feet. I would recommend this hotel based on its price and location. The owners have tried to make it more than it is, but their cost cutting is obvious. It has many nice stylistic touches, but it is not consistent. For example, the old stone walls have a lacquered appearance and they clash with the modern tile floors, homemade window screens and home-made carpentry, the flowers are plastic and wall hangings kitschy.

Room Tip: Upstairs rear room in the main hotel

We (thankfully) didn't experience the issues recorded here by other travellers. The Cava d'Oro is in a good location and, helpfully, is accesible by car (you have to park outside the city walls, but can enter to drop your luggage off at the hotel. Taxis can also pull up right outside). The rooms were small but comfortable with air conditioning. A decent continental breakfast was included. Booking and communication by email with the proprietor was straightforward. Only slight gripe would be the 'request' that we pay in cash, rather than by credit card (notwithstanding that they have a credit card machine). Would be happy to stay here again.

We had 2 cockroaches in our room which might have explained the chemical smell (insecticide?). When the German female owner was informed the next morning, she denied knowledge of vermin and said the smell would be from a mosquito repellent device. Having just read earlier reviews other guests have also shared a room with cockroaches. Had she been more concerned or apologetic I may not be writing this. the other niggles - no proper coffee on offer when it ran out, only nescafe. Male owner did not help me (female) with luggage up the stairs. Horrible hand-held shower and very odd decor in the bedrooms. The breakfast was poor but courtyard pretty. i cannot understand the five star reviews of this place.

My summary of this place: reasonably priced, good location, decent breakfast, small rooms and bed, efficient service but without a smile...

Cava D Oro hotel is a small, reasonably cheap hotel which is in a good location in a quiet part of the old town. I was in a party of 4 people who stayed there in October 2009 (shoulder season). There are 2 parts to the hotel – a main building and a second detached building located 50m up the street. We were quoted 70 euros for rooms locating in the main building and 55 euros for the rooms in the second building. We took the latter.

The hotel can be described as quaint and reasonably charming. It is run by a German lady who now lives in Greece. She was polite but I would describe her as not really having much personality. Her dealings with us were perfunctory at best. It wasnt a deal breaker, but she simply lacked the warmth and relaxed nature of some of the other hotel operators in Greece.

The room I stayed in was quite small. As a result the bed is also tiny. I am 5ft 10 inches and my feet and ankles were hanging off the end of the bed. Taller people will not be able to sleep in this bed! Not sure what the other rooms are like though.

The bathroom was also quite small. The shower is a hand-held job and only has a shower curtain. Even the most careful use will still result in water getting over the floor.

The air conditioning worked well in one of the rooms but was marginal in the other room our friends were in. You dont have to pay extra for the air conditioning unlike some other places.

The TV does not have any dedicated English channels but fortunately some of the Greek stations played English movies (not that this is a big deal for people on holiday – but sometimes you may like to chill out in your room during the heat of the day).

Breakfast was decent with pumpernickel (pressed rye bread to cater for the mostly german guests), toast, ham, cheese, tomato, spreads, boiled eggs, coffee and tea, and sweet cakes. Breakfast is included in the price.

Small hotel at far end of the Old Town. Charming and clean but bring your own soap and shampoo as none is provided. Lights out around 11 pm and you'll be shooed out of the common areas. Probably not for everyone. No big complaints. Nice breakfast buffet.

Cava D'Oro is an excellent hotel in a fabulous location in Old Rhodes Town. Our room was lovely and the bathroom was exceptionally modern and clean. The room is small, but it is expected in Europe and there is a lovely courtyard to sit and relax. The breakfast buffet was very nice with lovely baked goods. Excellent value for the money.

We know Michael Palin stayed there, as this was emphasised by Brigid the owner and it appears that she trades on this. The actual Cava d'Oro hotel looks fantastic but we never managed to see one of its rooms as we were trundled up the road to an "annexe" and had to negotiate two flights of stairs, one of which was very steep and narrow. We are both 70 years old and we were offered no help with our heavy case! We had not previously been told that we would actually be in an annexe.

The room was basic with air conditioning but the wardrobe could not be used as one door was broken and hanging precariously. When reported, Brigid feigned surprise but took no action whilst we were there. There was no soap in the bathroom and the shower caused extensive flooding on the floor because of the inadequate curtain.

The breakfast was basic and uninspiring, no choice of cereals, etc. and certainly below par in our wide experience. The ambience of the lovely courtyard breakfast area was ruined by the cold and sullen attitude of the receptionist on duty.

As the room was available for one night only, Brigid "kindly" offered us a room at another of her hotels in the New Town, promising to deliver our case there as we were going to Lindos for the day. On returning from Lindos at 5.15, hot, tired and in need of a shower and a change of clothes, we discovered our case had not been delivered. We were told Brigid had gone shopping and forgotten it and was not due to return until 8pm! I therefore had to undertake a hot & tiring fast 25 minute walk to fetch the case. The return walk dragging the case over many cobbled streets was even more tiring in the high temperature.

We received no word of apology from Brigid. I would hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone ~ Michael Palin is welcome to it!!
