Cava d'Oro Hotel
Ranked #76 of 126 Hotels in Rhodes Town
Reviewed 11 October 2013

A most unusual little hotel tucked into the Eastern corner of World Heritage Rhodes Old Town. Built originally as vaulted store houses at least 800 years ago. Who can imagine what commodities have been stored here? wine? gold? weapons for numberless soldiers? Richard The Lionheart stopped off in Rhodes on his crusade to regain Jerusalem, maybe he made use of Cava D'Oro, it's easy enough to imagine so.
Nowadays it is the perfect base from which to explore the marvellous Old Town or as it is for us to stay for a night or two on our way to the tiny island of Halki. Cava D'Oro is forever ready to accommodate the awkward timings of planes and ferry boats.
The secluded courtyard where you enjoy the ample Nordic style breakfast is right against the massive walls themselves and the interior decoration reflects the years of the Knights of St John in an imaginatively consistent way.
Perhaps most importantly we have always received a warm and friendly welcome in this very special family run hotel.
"Study History because, it's everything that ever was"
And this is the place to do it. Graham Clarke 2013

Arrived late due to aircraft delay. The owner kept in touch throughout the day, she was available upon arrival. The room was excellent, with the addition of fresh fruit which was most welcome. Breakfast was also excellent with a varied choice. Location is also great for the Old Town.Desperately wanted to return on our return to Rhodes, but could'nt as the place was full. We would recommend for an overnight stop over or longer!

Very nice and small hotel integrated within the Western city wall of the historic centre of Rhodes. Hotel owners are a Greek-German couple. They will give useful tips for tavernes, cafe bars, shops etc.

We had a very small, but nice room with a ladder lode into the next flat with a balcony, only. View: courtyard.

A large breakfast buffet is available and could be served by request before the official timetable due to ferry-departures.

There are larger, plusher hotels in Rhodes but for us the Cava d'Oro can't be beaten. Full of old world character and charm and so peaceful but so close to the bustling centre of Old Rhodes Town.
Birgid, the owner has a fine eye for detail such as having got in some de-caffeinated coffee for my wife as she remembered this requirement from last year. She, her family and the one member of staff we encountered were warm and friendly.
thanks for another lovely stay and we are already looking forward to returning next year.

Rooms are amazinlgy decorated in the spirit of the knights of Rhodes. Rooms are big and the breakfast is good. Room Tip: All the rooms are quit but there is no view because the hotel is built next to the wall that surroun...

My wife, my 16-year old daughter, and I spent three nights at the Cava d'Oro earlier this week and we loved it, above all because of the warm personality of the woman who runs the place. She's fluent in Greek, English, and German (at least--I didn't ask about other languages), and she took care of every detail to make our stay comfortable. When a small leak developed between the toilet's tank and bowl (which needed only a towel on the floor as a short term remedy), she had a repairman working on it within one hour. And then she was very apologetic for the rest of our stay about that "problem" even though it hadn't inconvenienced us at all. The breakfast is very good, featuring rich, dark breads imported from Germany and do-it-yourself freshly squeezed orange juice (a machine does the real work--you just hold an orange half against a rotating hub). The location is great--on a quiet street, but close to beaches, shopping, restaurants, the port, and the archaeological museum. It's built into a wall of the medieval castle!

My wife and daughter thought the beds were a bit hard ((just so you know), but I don't agree with them: mine was fine.
