“Good Hotel Friendly Staff”
Reviewed 17 September 2012

Just spent 2 weeks in the Olympic Palace. It is a hotel for those people who want a reasonable standard of accommodation, food and service, The staff are excellent. Our room was 5 star + Huge double bed, excellent room facilities, sea view, balcony/terrace with sun beds, chairs and table. Non sea view rooms looked poor as the rear of the hotel looks on to the face of a mountain. The staff were excellent,. I require gluten free food and ther maitre de insisted on prepering a main course for me every night which was guaranteed as gluten free. Overall this was a very comfortable hotel in a busy part of Rhodes which would suit the over 50's.

Room Tip: Must be sea view

General
Just returned from a 2 week stay at the olympic (1 sept - 15 sep) and on the whole found the hotel to be adequate for what we needed.
If you want to stay in a hotel that has a great location for exploring then this is a good base.
The thing that set this hotel among one of the best we have stayed in was the staff. We found everyone helpful and couldn't do enough for us. We received 2 free bottles of wine during our stay (anniversary and birthday) which was a nice touch. The cleaners were always friendly and they cleaned the room everyday including the balcony. The waiters were quick to take our orders and would accommodate any requests we had. Look out for George in the restaurant and Lasarus in the 8th floor bar - they were fab.

The rooms
We stayed in a sea view room and are so glad we did. Our room was fantastic, clean, comfortable and a good size. The mountain view rooms looked dark, dingy, small and depressing. If you like to spend time on your balcony then I would recommend you pay the extra or see if you can get an upgrade. The room was cleaned everyday. Fresh soft towels in the bathroom. Only critisism was they didn't replenish the toiletaries or tea/coffee.

The resturant
We read some of the earlier reviews and took their advise. Big mistake. If you go at 7 there are no queues and the food was always hot. If you go later then you may have to queue during the busy period. Most of the time we waited less than 10 minutes to be seated by the manager. They cycled the food through various theme nights. I suffer from food allergies and never had a problem with the choice or quality. We also found they were very generous with the quantity of alcohol they served you. All the waiting staff were excellent.
The manager did send people away at evening meal if they were wearing beach wear such as scruffy shorts, football shirts and flip-flops.

The pool
Think cheep night club. At 10am the animation team blast out a annoying 'wake up call'. They then play the same play list at full blast every day. They have the same programme every day. They ask if you want to join in - but dont pester. The music is switched off over lunch so you can then relax in peace. I recommend that if you want to escape the noise take a lounger down to the area behind the tennis courts (but watch out for the ants). The pool bar was basic but had everything you needed. Service was always quick.

The cafe
Only used this a few times for drinks. We were all inclusive so would have to pay for any snacks. Good service from staff. Always welcomed you and asked if you were having a nice day.

8th floor bar
A must to watch the sunset. The bar staff are excellent (Stavros and Lasarus). Again really generous with the alcohol. This bar is where they have the entertainment. If you are expecting anything fancy you will be disappointed. They don't have any proffessional acts its just the annimation team. They do the basics ok - bingo, quizzes and a dance show.

Piano bar
We never used this. As all inclusive guests have to pay.

Summary
The good.......
The staff - everyone was fantastic, helpful and friendly
Room - get a sea view
Communal areas were generally clean and bright in the hotel. lots of seating areas if you just want to have a drink somewhere quiet and chill
Not many 6am lounger grabbers
Good mix of guests

The bad
Music too loud around the pool
All inclusive package. Limited to where you can and can't eat and drink.
People from other apartments and hotels using the pool
Some general maintenance required. Some of the pool umbrellas were broken. Pool toilets and the ones behind the reception were clean but scruffy
Gym really really bad. One treadmill, one bike and a couple of machines. Would expect something much better from this hotel
Entertainment like a butlins training camp!!!
Lifts that had a mind of there own. Take the stairs.
No pool towel change facility

Would we stay here again? YES. Great base and had a fantastic holiday overall
How would we rate it? 4 star for us. But if I would have been in a mountain view room 3 star at best

Room Tip: We stayed in 719 and it was really quiet. Not bothered by any hotel or road noise. Avoid the moun...

We have just returned from 7days at this hotel booked with Thomas Cook who rated this hotel 4plus which is definitely overrated.
Our main complaint is that the hotel is on the main Ixia to Rhodes town road, an extremely busy road with constant traffic noise which is inescapable and can be very dangerous to cross due to the fast speed of the traffic.
We found the hotel to be extremely dated and in need of a some renovation. We were in a room on the 6th floor with a sea view but, due to the road noise and the constant aircraft arrival into the nearby airport, we did not want to spend any time on the balcony. The bed and the pillows were extremely uncomfortable although the linen and towels were clean and changed on a daily basis. The bathroom badly needed upgrading and a thorough clean to remove the months of scum and limescale on taps shower head and shower screen. The open drain on the floor also smelt at times.
There are four lifts which were very tempremental with many guests being wary about using them as the were constantly getting stuck (as happened to us ) after which we only used the stairs.
The food, as mentioned in many reviews is poor, everything is luke warm, poor choice, unappetising and staff were very slow in replenishing empty trays. Restaurant had a very 'canteen' feel about it. We ate out of the hotel after day 2 for the rest of our holiday. We ate at Le Gourmet twice where the food and welcome was good. We also ate at La Luna, The Place and Sebastian's bar which all proved to be very friendly and reasonable places to eat and drink.
The Hotel staff at best are apathetic apart from the restaurant manager. We were regularly ignored by the reception staff especially in the evening when they were too busy playing solitare on the computer!. All in all we would not be returning to this hotel and would not recommend it.

Arriving check in was easy. Stayed in a sea view room which is a good large room with separate seating are, bed area and wardrobe/bathroom area. Seating are comprises bed settee so had to keep pushing the cushions on to sit comfortably. The bed was large a comfortable with spare pillows in cupboard, although some of the pillow case were badly stained. 12 coat hangers which was good. The bathroom was roomy with a show, although the shower screen barely covered half the bath length which meant that the floor was soaking wet after using the shower. The room has a kettle and cups and on arrival 2 sachets of coffee, 2 tea bags, 2 sugars and two small pots of cream, they were only renewed twice during the week so take your own if you like to wake up to a hot cup of coffee. There were toiletries in the bathroom, they were not replaced when used. Two pool towels were in the bathroom with a very stern and unwelcoming note about being charged 20 euro if they were not in the room when checking out. There was no towel exchange for the pool towels so after a week they were rather smelly! The bath towels were almost a good size but had seen better days, they were frayed and dried by friction rather than absorbtion. The balcony was of a good size with 3 chairs, pity they dont think about cleaning it, during our stay it was not swept or mopped and swimming gear 'disappeared' from the balcony - dont leave it on the balcony if you are not in the room. We returned to our room when the cleaners were in the second day and one of them was going through the cupboard, she quickly shut it as we entered but I felt I had to lock things away everytime we left the room. The room does have a safe but the charge to use it is 12 euro per week..disgusting..at every turn the hotel wanted to charge for extras which should have been included, I have never had to pay this kind of price to use a room safe. The WiFi is also charged for at 3 euro for 1 hour or 5 euro for 2 hours, the first login given to me had already been used, when I managed to get on line (which took forever, two visits to reception and a visit to the room) 25 mins had already been used, I got a new login after complaining but the signal was so poor that most of the time all I got was 'website not responding'. DONT pay for this poor service use the free WiFi in the excellent bars and restaurants 2 minutes away. Now the food...breakfast OK if greasy but dinner, oh my I thought I was back in a school canteen. Soup obviously made from Knorr packets. Every night boiled potatoes and one veg, oh and dont forget the veal stew which they never seemed to run out of! Desserts - synthetic cream and everything covered in nuts, fruit an alternative as long as you want melon or hard chopped up peaches, never anything else. My tip just go B&B dont waste your money on the slop they serve for dinner, besides being mainly cold its unappetising and never had one Greek dish. The will serve jugs of iced tap water and dont believe you have to buy bottled water the water that comes out of the tap is quite acceptable. Eat out, there are lots of local restaurants all with lovely staff and food. Overall the hotel is a LOW 4* not a 5* as claimed by the hotel, if they want to call themselves a 5* they need to up their game, the facilities and services are outdone by many 3* hotels, the hotel needs a good upgrade and repairs. The rooftop bar has no atmosphere, one waiter running round, if you want a drink best go to the bar yourself. Oh and dont ask reception to call a cab for you they charge 2 euro to do so, there are many cabs up and down so only takes 2 minutes to flag one down. The bus stop to Rhodes town is right outside the hotel and buses cost 2.10 euro, you catch buses all over the island from Rhodes town. Good area to stay but was disappointed with the hotel itself.

Room Tip: Go B&B dinner is not worth the queue to get into the restaurant.

The hotel itself is rather nice but there are some rooms that are simply disgusting. Our room number was 236 and as I understand once it was a staff room. The room wasn't reconditioned for a long time, it was stinky, the furniture was in a bad shape. The balkony was almost sticking into the mountain behind the hotel so we had no sunlight at all. It's very important to say that most of the rooms do look good and were recently reconditioned.
The food was rather good but it was almost the same every day.

This was our first time at this Hotel, it is officaly rated a 5*, however it is not in our opinion but a 4* in Greek standards, please do not let this put you off, because it is a good hotel. The staff were very helpful and friendly. We booked a double room sea view, on arriving we were given a large superior sea view, very spacious you can see that it has been renovated to a more up to date standard, however the balcony gave this away, very old and tired looking, bed linen and towells changed every day. We were- on Half Board basis, the restaurant was very clean and the food was very good with plenty of variety. We cannot comment on the entertainments, but I think it was low key, but we went out most evenings for a drink. There is a roof top bar on the 8th floor, we found this very relaxing looking over ixia bay in the evening. We found the pool was very clean, there are plenty of sunbeds, but for us very congested too close for comfort. We were informed on our last day by a member of staff, there is a quiet area near the tennis courts, they sometimes put sunbeds there for people. Everything considered, it was a good value Hotel.

Room Tip: Sea View rooms

Booked this hotel not having been to Rhodes before and a little nervous about what a Rhodes town hotel would be like. The Olympic is in Ixia which is about 5km outside Rhodes town. Really easy to get into Rhodes town by bus which stops at the end of the drive and costs 4euros or by taxi which is 8euros but there are always plenty of other couples willing to share which brings it down to cost of bus. The hotel is pristinely clean -bedding changed daily and the pool area the same. The food is not gourmet but is good and plentiful and if you are not a very fussy eater there is always plenty to choose from. The restaurant manager is an absolute star and the flexibility of being able to change between lunch and dinner daily if you are half board is fantastic. We changed every other day and ate in Rhodes old town which is exquisite. Would particularly recommend Eros restaurant which gave us the best value meal we had . The owner will provide you with a selection of Greek starters and mains and the service we received here was second to none. Also try Le Gourmet in Ixia. Maria will take you through the menu but let her take the lead at least one night . It won't be the cheapest meal you have had but it will be more authentic and beautifully cooked. Sebastian's bar, Glory Days and Keep it simple are great bars within 5 mins walk of the hotel. Word of warning - don't book this hotel if you are avid gym buddies. It is very basic with a couple of bikes, a treadmill and 2 multi gym machines but NO air conditioning. We managed for our holiday by road running early morning and finishing In the gym but it's basic at best. We would probably return but have looked at the Amathus Beach hotel next door which is definitely a 5star with a fantastic spa and gym. The Olypmic was a good 4 star but not a 5 as it professes.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms the best
