Reviewed 4 July 2009

We just got back from the Ixian Grand being very disappointed with our stay. We had booked through our agent, after seeing the hotel site and photos and were actually wondering what could go wrong on a 5* vacation. Well, the beach is awful, full of rocks, no sand at all ( I have even cut a finger while bathing) and the rocks go for about 3 meters into the water making it very unpleasant to bathe in the sea. There aren't even nearly enough seats at the beach, and, after we were left with no seats the first day, we had to wake up early every morning, hunt and occupy a spot. Our beach towels were not changed for the entire stay there...they could almost adhere to furniture...
The room ambiance was ok, not much to complain here other than the sink being placed in the hallway, right next to the door and the shower drain being clogged...
The room was positioned over the kitchen it seems and we were awaken every morning by the sound of dishes and staff talking.
The morning buffet was also ok, however the dinner buffet food was inedible. None of the food had any taste and the resemblance to the Cuisine themes they attempted every evening was a failure (I will not mention what they did to Italian and Spanish cuisine).
We also had to queue for up to 10 minutes to be seated at dinner, even as they had two staff members (mis)handling this.
The pool bar has a small variety of drinks and, interestingly enough, they seem to interpret the order their own way (had ordered Fanta and received something local, not even close to it) even though the prices are through the roof.
Regarding the location, when leaving the hotel it's advisable to rent a car rather than traveling on foot, as there's a lot of dust and abandoned sites. I will give them at least this - the hotel cannot decide upon others' property, so the way the surrounding properties look is not their fault.
We are overall disappointed with our stay there and would not recommend it to anyone.

The hotel is situated down a very scuffy road just off the main coast road from the airport to Rhodes Town. This approach road is dirty and edged with abandoned bars and shops, half built properties, derelict properties, an abandoned car, piles of rubbish, road building materials and unused building plots. Crossing the main coast road is hazardous due to continuing traffic and a lack of pedestrian crossings.

The various hotel websites are inaccurate. One website refers to the hotel as 'all inclusive' which it certainly is not! No welcome drink on arrival - as promised on the website - and the porter disappeared with our cases and did not guide us to our room.

Our 10% early booking discount had not been applied and we had to argue for 20 minutes to get the excess payment refunded.

The room was satisfactory apart from a 'wet room' style shower that flooded the whole bathroom when in use and lights that had a mind of their own! It was, however, not a luxury 5 star room. The curtains were falling off their track on one side. The bed sheets were not wide enough for the bed. Room cleanliness was very good however - the maids were efficient.

No hotel information was provided in the room about hotel facilities - restaurants, shops, opening times, local facilities, check out time etc.

Postcards could be purchased in the small shop - but no stamps were available!

There were inadequate no smoking areas provided in hotel lounges.

The guest relations executive does not exist! Wi-fi access is chargeable in the lobby - not free as stated on the website. The hotel is certainly not suitable for children as there are no facilities for them - though this did not affect us.

There are no sports facilities, spa or gym in the hotel, and the website referred to availability of sailboards - which did not exist. Sunbeds are not reserved for you during your stay nor are towels available on the pool area - despite this being stated on the website.

We were shocked to see a member of staff exercising and toileting his dog on the poolside lawn - and a second dog allowed to swim in the hotel pool!

Signage around the hotel is poor - especially to the hotel toilets which are hidden away. There is even no hotel sign at the end of the drive or over the main entrance.

Main restaurant service was very poor. Long queues at peak times on entry - due to insufficient staff to clear tables and to seat arriving guests. You could lose the will to live by waiting for coffee - so slow and erratic was the service. Staff had to be constantly chased for coffee. Water was brought to the table in vacuum flasks for making tea but always arrived cold. Food hotplates were not hot enough - scrambled eggs, fried eggs and omelettes were always cold. Poor choice of fresh fruit - most of it being tinned.

All meals were buffet self-service- not waiter service as you would expect in a 5 star hotel.

We booked the DeGu 7 'fine dining' restaurant one evening. On arrival there was a very frosty welcome. Our booking had been 'lost' and we had not been given the necessary voucher by reception when booking. We were kept waiting while other guests with vouchers took priority!

Our 7 course tasting menu took 3 1/2 hours to complete - so slow was the service - despite the fact that 6 of the 7 dishes were cold plate courses requiring no cooking on the night. We were charged 50 Euros each for this dubious 'pleasure'. The waiter's idea of clearing a table was to move the dirty dishes to the adjacent table. Also the hotel's stated policy of not admitting children under 12 years of age was not adhered to and our meal was spoiled by some very young children.

Other guests were being offered an a la carte option in the same DeGu 7 restaurant but we were told that only the expensive tasting menu was served there - which was incorrect.

Drinks in general in the hotel were very expensive compared to bars and restaurants in the local area and lunchtime meals in the poolside restaurant were very unimaginative and sometimes cold on arrival - as well as being expensive.

In our view, this is a hotel to avoid completely!

Looks good, but not much behind the facade.
No details in the room of amenities.
Floor in reception devilishly slippy; entertainment very poor - one Greek singer twice a week...you can only listen to so many greek tunes...;nowhere else to go locally for entertainment; drink prices extortionate, inc 7 times price for water than local supermarket - I don't class water as a luxury, but they do at this hotel;
Bathrooms need updating, tatty shower is no way 5*.
bed was good, very large, but superfluous decorative cushions when we arrived at 4 a.m., and couldn't find the pillows...
Air conditioning not available until 15 May...then out of order for another day. A/C only comes on when centrally authorised!!! Could only have it on at night!!
Pool aesthetically pleasing, but could not use it - absolutely freezing, cooled by welcome sea breeze, but actually painful to try to go in....other pool in sheltered area not in use??
Poolside beach bar sold chicken scraps from the carcasse as a meal, with no warning on the menu, and chrged the earth for it - disgraceful, and the waitress wouldn't meet our eye or deal with the problem.
Main restaurant requires long trousers for men - trying to raise the standard of the hotel and make you think you are somewhere posh??
Supermarket opens only in the morning - never actually caught it open.
So all in all, we were very disappointed. moral of the story - don't go to the Ixian Grand.

To summarise:
Room - good once we got an upgrade.
Hotel - stylish, well maintained, good staff, very quiet.
Pool - excellent, plenty of sunbeds, near sea.
Resort - Ixia a ten minute walk away down a dark road - seemed a run down area. Plenty of bars and restaurants but you had to cross a busy road. 15 minute taxi to Rhodes or 20 minute half hourly bus ride.

Detail!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Ixian Grand - stylish, beautifully maintained, lovely pool area and poolside resataurant which was very reasonably priced for lunch - but - I do agree with some of the earlier comments. On the positive side the staff were good, breakfast buffet was excellent, evening buffet had plenty of choice but not always very hot. Good selection of salads, desserts and cheese. However we didn't get the facilities advertised probably because it was the end of season. There was no evening entertainment during our stay and the Degu 7 restaurant was closed so evenings were very quiet. The hotel is about a ten minute walk from the bars in Ixia down a dark road so we didn't want to go there. The alternative would be a 15 minute taxi into Rhodes. I'm telling you this because this is also the first hotel I've ever been in that had absolutely no information in the room about the facilities in the hotel or the surrounding area. Also - and this is nothing to do with the hotel - it's the first holiday where we haven't had a tour rep trying to sell us day trips so we had to organise our own! Not a problem because there's an agent in Ixia and we got a better deal than some people in the hotel who had organised it through a rep.
We also are two professional women looking for a quiet break and when we booked our hotel through a travel club asked twice that they could confirm that the room would have two beds. However when we arrived at 10.30pm we were shown to a small room with one bed. It was supposed to be a Superior room with a garden view but the view we had was of the suites with the private pools that we couldn't use! We immediately went back to reception to be told that none of the rooms have two beds but they could make up the sofa bed. We had a drink in the bar to give them time to do this but when we got back to the room we found that they had just put the sheets down on the single couch and we had to make the bed up ourselves! However the following morning they did upgrade us to a Junior Suite with a sea view but this was probably only possible because it was the last week of the season. This was a lovely room although we were initially disappointed that it had a shower - a wet room which in fact was lethal because the water didn't drain - we could have done with a mop - but no bath. However at the end of the first day we found the jacuzzi bath hidden behind the curtain! Agree with previous comments that they needed hooks somewhere for robes and towels - absolutely nowhere to hang them.
In spite of my negative comments we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay once the room was changed.

We booked directly on the internet with the hotel and I think we were upgraded to a sea-facing room with a nice view and a lot of space. The room was simply furnished in a Mediterranean style with good lighting (once you found out how to work it!), a safe and a bath/jacuzzi. The air conditioning was effective. It was, in short a nice room.
We were well received when we arrived and the receptionists were excellent. Later in my stay they even got me an emergency appointment on a Saturday with a dentist at very short notice - try that in Britain! In fact all the staff were pleasant and helpful. The hotel was immaculately clean . The bar was expensive and quiet in the evening - why don't they try a "Happy Hour"? - and there was little entertainment - just a duo on one night during a week's stay.
The outside pool facilities looked OK but I don't travel to lie at a pool all day so I cannot really comment. We were on half board and the evening meal was a buffet. I am not a fan of buffets but this one was quite good. The cold salads were excellent and it was quite nice to mix and match with all sorts of combinations. Haute cuisine it was not but my wife and I both enjoyed most evening meals. Breakfast was fairly extensive with hot and cold offerings.
Overall we had an excellent stay and, for what we paid, it was superb value for money. Is it 5 star? It is not by the standards of many countries but, in British terms, I would rate it a pretty good four star. The place is after all a Mediterranean holiday resort catering for many nationalities and is it reasonable, for example, to expect a turn down service in these circumstances? We popped into a few hotels in the area and first impressions of them were that the Ixian Grand is probably as good as it gets in this area.
The hotel is certainly unprepossesssingly situated - development on the open space next to it would be helpful - but it is only a five minute walk from the centre of Ixia where there is a cornucopia of bars, reataurants and shops of all kind and a reasonably frequent bus service to the centre of Rhodes town (fare 2 Euros - travel time 10-15 minutes). It is not a hotel for ravers or even perhaps younger people but there is a place called Faliraki for them!
On my experience I would thoroughly recommend the hotel as were treated well throughout our stay.

THE IXIAN GRAND
1-8 Oct 2008
We reviewed many hotels before booking the Ixian Grand for our one previous holiday week in the year. We read conflicting reviews about the Ixian Grand so obviously apprenhensive when we arrived.

We are 2 professional women who are desperate for a week's break in the sun and it was important to choose a hotel without too many shreiking children or lager louts which was the other reason for travelling at the end of the summer season.

The Ixian Grand was impressive on arrival, we liked the space. all the lounge areas, indoors and outdoors are spacious and comfortable with a bar nearby.

The room is lovely but there are no twin rooms however the bed are large enough to sleep four so no collision with sleep walking, talking and restless sleepers! the air-conditioned room was clean and very spacious with a little balcony facing the private apartment pools. We had the garden view and it was tranquil and quiet.

The pool area was wonderful but the water was very cold and it was a challenge to go for our daily compulsive swims! there are 3 pools, one with a jacuzzi at one end, the other a children's pool and the 3rd a sea water pool. Lots of sun loungers around the pool and the garden leading to the beach which is only 2 minutes walk from the pool

The beaches are not the best on this coast however we were looking for a tranquil place to unwind and this was a great find.

For the workoholics like us, there is free wifi but bring your own laptop or you can pay to use the hotels. Wonderful news to discover there is wifi by the pool! or sad?

Food was alright as expected.Breakfast has a large choice and a good selection of fruits. We did not have dinner at the hotel. there are lots of tarvenas and restaurants within 10-15mins walk from the hotel and all of good standards.

The staff are very friendly, helpful and accomodating and we did have to lug our own cases to our room but it wasn't the end of the world. they all had wheels (noticed complaint about this in review dated 2 Oct).

so all in all, it was a good choice and we had a brilliant time chilling out.

We just got back from two weeks in the greek islands and turkey where we stayed 3 nights at the Grand. We really enjoyed our stay.

We picked a 'superior' room which was a steal at $95 Canadian.
It was large, spotless and had a nice balcony although since it was in the garden section, the view was nothing special. After seeing a deluxe room, which was newly decorated but smaller - we made the right choice getting the cheaper room which was still quite up to date, and was the biggest hotel room I've ever had in europe.

The beach is pleasant although it has small pebbles not sand. Was very quiet, no kids, decent sized crowd. We enjoyed the breakfasts and the dinners (large buffets) under the half board plan. Many dinner selections changed nightly.

The grounds and pool are beautiful and the staff very helpful.
The pool wasn't heated though; so in october it was too cold to swim. Ocean was pretty chilly too.

The town nearby is unkempt but safe. But Rhodes town is where its at, and that's just a $12 cab ride away.

If you want a nice place to relax by the beach and still be pretty close to Rhodes town than this is the place for you. One day is enough to see the Old town in Rhodes anyways so we were especially glad we came here and mixed the cultural experience with some good beach time!
