Would stay there again.
Recommend to
* rent a car (directly in hotel, prices are comparable) and drive to the other side of the island.
* travel by bus to center of Rhodos town
* for diving and snorkeling use opposite side of the island. Best beach Anthony Quinn.

Room Tip: First floors on bungalows. View to the pool can be noisy.

Whenever I write a review for a hotel/resort it is always very detailed piece of mixed thoughts and conclusions that crossed my mind whilst staying at the hotel. I had been writing this for the whole of my two weeks stay, so you can be sure information here are quite accurate. I think people deserve to have the best possible knowledge about the place they intend to visit and that's what Tripadvisor is all about.

1. FLIGHT@@ Thomson has to upgrade its fleet. it is ageing very quickly. forget all this nonsense about spacious seats and good deal of legroom. It is nothing better than Ryanair or Wizzair, especially if you are flying short haul. Seats are worn out and the whole interior of an aircraft screams for revamp. It has not been comfortable flight at all.

2. TRANSFER@@ Very short ride from Rhodes airport to the hotel. very spacious and comfortable coach. Very pleasant greeting at the hotel, however no welcome drink ;).

3. GETTING AROUND@@ Keys for the room are joke. very heavy magnet with the actual key. magnet needs to be placed inside a small hole in the wall in your room to provide constant lightning. whenever you take the key with magnet out, your lights will be switched off in about a minute or less. so if you want to wander around the resort in the same time leaving someone from your party behind, the only option is to detach the key from the magnet and take it with you, leaving magnet in the hole... I understand their concern about saving energy this way, but come on... It should be much more comfortable for clients. Resort is very small and finding your way around should not take you more than half an hour. Beach is pebbly, no golden sands unfortunately and you will need sea shoes to be able to walk down there comfortably. You can buy all swimming/water gear at the hotel shop. Beach is partially public so you will spot some fishermen as well as other locals, making most of their day too. But it's not a big deal at all, as they are very friendly.

4. AIR-CON@@ Off season (after 15/09 and before 15/06) you will be charged for air-condition if you wish to use it. and believe me, it can be very hot here even in mid September. it is not cheap. it works out about 150 euros for 2 weeks stay. best advice: if you can, stay off the ground floor, where it gets really hot. But air-con is not compulsory so it's all down to your wallet and personal preference I guess.

5. KIDS@@ If you have kids, read on. If you don't, simply skip to the next section. Well, it's not quite family friendly hotel, especially if you have very small children. Whatever you read on websites, there is no playground here. If they call it playground, they only mean few toys left scattered on the grass by the main walkway. You can't have your little ones running around loose as there is no barriers/fences around bars and pool and the resort itself is very small with quite large pool in the middle and very steep descend to the beach. There is a Kids Club but is nothing more than an old bamboo shed filled with very old and dirty toys. Girl who is in charge there, has no actual plan or interest in gathering all small kids from around the resort and make them really busy. It's more improvisation thing than real deal. But I found out that she's been with Avra hotel only for about a month so surely deserves a chance. She seems to be very nice although lacking in experience yet. Evening mini disco is actually much better, where kids can dance and jump on the main scene. Apart from that, there are no other children facilities in the hotel. I'd say for age 1-3 don't bother. Above 4 years old- your kid will probably find something useful to do. If you pop into the shopping centre just left of the hotel and then keep walking straight down to the beach, you will find a small playground on the right hand side that you can use free of charge.

6. FACILITIES, ENTERTAINMENT AND FOOD@@ Although very small, resort is very well maintained and cleaned daily. Some rooms are dated and need some refurbishments or small repairs, like balcony/bathroom locks, but nothing major really. Safes are chargeable (29 euros for two weeks stay) but worth getting just for piece of mind. Lobby and grounds around main bar are very spacious and comfy. If you happen to book a room in main block, this hotel features only sea side view unfortunately, which means from your balcony you will be looking either towards main road or sea. But the view itself is not as spectacular as you might expect. Only bungalows can provide full front sea view but only as high as from first floor. Facilities include: main bar, one restaurant (breakfast, lunch, dinner), game room, bridge game room, bar by the pool, one quite large pool, volleyball pitch, small football pitch and, mentioned earlier, Kids Club shed. Sun beds are also chargeable and you must be really quick to get them as they running out pretty quickly in good weather. A complete fail is the fact that your beach towels (blue ones) are exchanged only once a week, which means you will be given fresh set on arrival, then towels will be exchanged for new ones after a week, and then on your departure you will return them. What is really annoying, you have to remind the reception day before that your towels are due to be exchanged. Otherwise they will not do that. If you are staying one week, you will be given only one set of beach towels for your party. Try your luck and just leave them on the bathroom floor whenever you want to, and maids may take care of it. It worked for us. Entertainment is rather standard here, as an evening time waster it is an option for some. Food variety is rather poor. It is a matter of taste of course, but I've seen better. Personally, I didn't like it at all. Tasteless and without a vibe. Restaurant can get very crowded during rain or strong winds, when its extension is being closed. Sometimes you will have to wait few minutes to get a table. What I've noticed is very poor choice of fruits here and menu tends to be repeatable. Unlike in some other resorts, you are permitted to take the food out of restaurant, after having a meal. Restaurant is closing its doors between breakfast, lunch and dinner, but food is still available from beach bar or main bar. Service is very good and one man who appeared to be a restaurant manager is very kind, always smiling and he runs things very smoothly even when problems arise. Top guy.

7. THINGS TO DO/SEE@@ Absolute must is to visit Rhodes old and new town. You can easily spend one day just wandering in Old Town (it's amazing), so take your time and make sure you come back for more. Some people claim it took them even 3 to 5 full days just to explore every corner of Old Town and I believe them. It's a wonderful, ancient maze of narrow streets, filled with shops and restaurants and also quiet ones, where you meet friendly Greeks going around their daily things. Be careful though, there are also plenty of crooks trying to sell you stuff and beggars, mostly mothers with children sitting on the pavements. But remember, they are not Greeks. They appeared to be rather Turks or Gypsies and Greeks hate them. I witnessed one big argument when older Greek tried to make one of them stop playing mandolin. You will also encounter some Nigerian women by the marina, who will grab your hand straightaway trying to sell you some silly bracelets by talking nonsense about protection from demons and stuff... Just keep walking and don't talk to them as they are very rude. Another great place to see is Lindos village, about 50km from Avra Beach Resort. You can go there by bus (5 euro), by taxi (55 euro) or rent a car. Every time reception calls the cab for you, you pay 3 euro more than standard taxi rate. For example, taxi to Rhodes town will cost you 12 euro from the hotel, or 9 euro if you decide to step outside and hail one down yourself. Funny but true. There are plenty of them driving up and down the street.

8. THE VERDICT@@ Hotel worth a visit? Absolutely yes. Top hotel and service? Unfortunately not. I would not be coming back here pure because of one reason: I never go twice to the same resort/hotel. We have had an amazing stay but it was more a mixed things that delivered it: fantastic weather, great sea, plenty to see on the island and finally, hotel. But the resort itself would have not sufficed had it been located not in "holiday spot". For first timers in Greece, I can surely recommend the place. For someone who has already been in Greece, look somewhere else. But if you do decide to book your first stay in Greece with AVRA, don't be shocked by overwhelming number of... cats in the resort and on the whole island. They are harmless and very cute addition to the picture.
Thank you for reading. Hopefully length of this review justifies amount of useful information you can find here.

The hotel staff were helpful and friendly our room was clean and comfortable but would question the linen changed three times a week which did not happen our case. The entertainment staff were excellent and kept all ages entertained. I did have few concerns as while we were there two people slipped on the wet floor maybe a handrail on the ramps would help. On the whole was enjoyable holiday and would go there again

Room Tip: If you can have room on higher floor on pool side for better views

This was our sixth visit to Avra Beach .Little has changed since our last visit in October 2012 we were entertained brilliantly again by Artur,Chris,Elin and the new face of SophieTHANKS GUYS.They are excellent at keeping me busy as I'm not a sun worshipper. They have Sophie looking after toddlers Elin looking after teens and Chris and Artur the adults theres a comprehensive programme through the day. They then they all take to the stage to entertain us in the evening.Mini disco cartoons photos and videos of the days activities plus all the shows too.The hotel was very clean as always with a large team of people looking after the rooms public areas pool etc.The food was great as always with plenty to choose from and they still run theme nights with differnt options nightly and plenty of greek dishes too.It is all served as as buffet so help your self and try something may be you wouldnt want to pay for at a restaurant.Just one tiny critism this year was that brekfast at the busiest times was a but of a free for all getting coffee , a table on the terrace etc but as usual the staff are brilliant and work very hard.
The bars are staffed by legends Nicolas,Kiriakous,Natasha,Thomas and Vangelis THANKS GUYS they work ever so hard they remember your drinks.. your name.. they clear tables, pick up your breakages and mop up your spills all with a very big smile.

All the above adds up to one very big family for whom you cant help getting getting close to this quite obviously rubs off on the other guests the atmosphere is superb we always come away with a very heavy heart leaving lots of new friends behind .As we return we see many returning too ....Must be the AB effect thanks again everyone see you next May. Room Tip: overlooking pool football area great for a drink and watching the sunset

The staff here cant do enough for you, always there if you need help nothing is to much trouble no matter how small or big.

I want to stress prior to anyone reading this, that isn't a negative review. Overall Avra Beach is a great hotel, but we did have a couple of niggles and minor gripes.

Avra Beach is situated about a 20 - 25 minute coach transfer from the airport with additional Hotel stops on the way. Several restaurants within an easy 10 minute walk away if you don't want to stay on the hotel grounds for food. We had a late check out on our last day and ate at a Taverna called Dimitrious which served fantastic, incredibly tasty and well priced food

It is located close to the landing flight path of the airport so planes can be watched coming in to land ... I thought this would be a negative at first, and if you were staying any closer to the airport it would be, but to be honest, you can hardly notice them, and it's was quite cool to see the planes banking in to their landing run.

Rhodes Town is around 10 - 15 minutes away by bus, which stop right outside the hotel and are cheap enough, with tickets being sold at the on-site mini market at €2.20 per ticket one way.

The Staff were friendly and helpful, and the reception, restaurant and bar areas are nicely decorated and appointed with comfy chairs and sofas. However (Negative Number 1) once into the main accommodation blocks there were some niggles: Frayed and faded carpets, light fittings with flaking finish, chips and gouges in the walls and the interior of the lifts were covered in graffiti.

The room was nice and airy; we were in Room 331 (3rd Floor right at the end) and had good views of the sea on the right and the hills on the left from the balcony, but (Negative's Number 2 and 3) the bathroom only had one light fitting and was therefore quite a dark and dingy place for ablutions and the room decor was also a bit dated and could do with a refresh, but otherwise was clean, tidy and more than adequate and if you want air-con out of high season, it's an additional cost - Again, something we thought a 4* resort would offer at all times..

In addition to that, our room was situated over the corridor from the cleaners office ... they started at 7am and were less than Ninja like in their duties with bangs, crashes and loud chatting.

We were a little nonplussed to learn that we had to pay for WIFI access at €15 for 24 Hours access - It was another assumption that 4* resort would offer this for free, and it was patchy at best with signal being lost mid browse on several occasions.

The pool area is well tended, and the pool bar a shady, cool escape from the heat of the day looking out over the sea with Turkey clearly visible. The third negative I found was that as I spent quite a lot of time with my goggles on in the pool, I noticed that here and there, bits of tile trim missing, and it wasn't as clean as I would have expected from a 4* Hotel with a bit of green stuff on the tile filler, but beyond that, the water was clean and the sun loungers readily available.

There's no beach as such, with the but the sea was shallow out to 30 odd feet from the shore, with only the first 10 feet being pebbly, then soft and.

The local beer is called VAP, and is very nice. I know, I drank quite a lot of it! The cocktails are also good, if strong (No proper measures ... just pour and pray!)

Breakfast menu was a selection of cold meats/cheeses, cereal or an array of hot food (Bacon, scrambled and boiled eggs etc).

For the lunch and evening menus, If you are a meat eater, then the food will be fine ... numerous meat dishes available every night, and as we are pescetarians, we also assumed that we'd be well catered for with fish dishes, but found that while fish was on the menu every night, it quite often didn't seem to be well cooked and a such we tended to avoid it. Designated vegetarian dishes were few and far between, but despite this we didn't go hungry.

Snacks were available from the pool bar which consisted of sandwiches (Ham and Cheese), Pizza (Generally Ham) and cakes .. a mix of chocolate and marble cakes and biscuits, with soft drinks and tea/coffee available all day.

The animation team were very good ... friendly and not pushy when asking for participation , with Water polo, Darts, Table Tennis and Football for adults and kids throughout the day, with entertainment also on of an evening (Blokes ... sign up for the Ladies Night event if they put it on: Great Fun)

SUMMARY: Overall I would question the 4* rating of the hotel .... The niggles I have mentioned stop it from reaching that standard IMHO.

If there was such a thing as a 3* Plus, I'd put it at that: Not quite a full 4* but better than a 3*

In comparison, we spent 10 Days at the Mareblue Apostolata in Kefalonia last year, which is also a 4* Hotel, but outdid Avra Beach in every way: Free WIFI, sparklingly clean pool and rooms, food well cooked and a veggie option everynight, with the only downside being that it's located a good 10 minute taxi ride from the nearest town (Skala), negated by the fact that the hotel provided a free, regular bus for patrons.
