“Great location but a bit disappointing”
Reviewed 7 August 2014

This hotel looks great on all the booking websites and indeed money has been spent on lobby, bar and pool area as seen in the photos. Its in a great location - right next to the entrance to the Old Town and by the port - you can see ferries from the balcony. The rooms were a good size. separate kitchen, lounge with sofa beds and a double bedroom with a double balcony. My main criticism is the state of the rooms - in dire need of updating. When we got there we were given a room with a manky bathroom and stains all over the place. I went to see the receptionist and we got moved the next day to a better room overlooking the harbour as well.

Once I had made my dissatisfaction clear, the staff were very friendly and keen to please. However, it soured our 3 days a bit.

Another tip, please avoid the restaurants in the old town that have rooftop restaurants - the one with a parrot (New Town?) is a rip off and tried to charge us 115 euros for 2 kids meals, a pizza and skewer. Tried to charge us 10 euros for water, 10 for bread and 10 for tsatsiki. Please ensure you do not order anything without knowing the price. I got it reduced to 60 euros but only after a shouting match. Try and go to the smaller restaurants around the little streets - much better

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the harbour. Top floor seems to be better. Avoid room #309. I think our better ro...

There are no faults that I can make about the rooms, staff, facilities or location - there is only one fault i can make: we stayed Bed and Breakfast - The beds are AMAZING - however breakfast is that the breakfast was only worth about 2* - very little choices - however the food wasn't bad, just limited. We ended up taking our own juice (which incidentally wasnt that nice really). HOWEVER we went in May of 2013, so the quality may have changed some what.

Definately worth a visit - however would adivise that if you are going for breakfast aswell, take something of your own or go to the bar or somewhere else afterwards so you don't go hungry.

Room Tip: The higher the room, the better the views are.

Nothing that was really bad but also nothing really great.

Point for improvement:

Please, if you offer wifi throughout the whole hotel make it work fast and properly.

Swimming pool ok, allthough the stairs to climb in/out where hanging loose a bit.

Nice:

Pool table, friendly bartender.

This hotel is located close to the harbour with cruise liners and island ferries within view. It is also a stones throw from the old town with its history, shops and tavernas. The hotel is modern with large room, we'll furnished and clean. Facilities include swimming pool with sun beds etc and a restaurant and bar.
The beach is very close.
The only down side is its close proximity to a busy road.

Room Tip: 415 is a good room if you like a view of the harbour and the sea. It's on the top floor so road...

Good location, reception staff not very service- minded and A little condecending.
Could not manage to give us our room or any other room a few extra hours on departure day, though given a fourthnight notice of our wish.
Do not choose this hotel if you might come to need a little extra service.
And by the way, the price for their inconvenience was not a matter for us. We fully recommend Rhodes Town but spend a little more money on a nettet hotel.

I have mixed feelings about the Athineon hotel, on one hand the location is very convenient for visiting the old town but on the other hand rather far from the shopping and restaurant areas of the modern part of the city and the beaches. The hotel is situated half a block from the sea. It is a bit wore and torn but the two room suites are spacious with a large balcony. Most of the balconies have very little privacy so if that is important you should ask for a room with a street view which also is a view to the harbour. The Vironos Street, though, is very busy with a lot of traffic. Rooms on the 4th floor might be the best. The hotel offers a meal plan which we did not try. We made our own breakfast using the kitchenette facilities which included a coffee maker, a cooking plate and utensils etc. The fridge was also large enough to store our food and drinks.
The pool area is large with lots of sun all day and plenty of sunbeds. No pool towels are offered so bring your own.
The hotel staff was OK, not over friendly but always helpful if you needed assistance.
There is a basic supermarket on the ground floor but you will find a large one a few blocks up the Kanada Street and also a bakery and a fruit and vegetable store. Every Thursday from appr. 8 am to 2 pm there is a market up the Vironos Street, where farmers sell fruit and vegetables.

Room Tip: Not a corner room e.g. 110, 210, 310, 410, there is no privacy if you wish to chill out on you balco...
