Mitsis La Vita Beach Hotel
Ranked #59 of 126 Hotels in Rhodes Town
Reviewed 14 September 2007

We have just returned from a weeks holiday in rhodes at the la vita hotel.
If you have paid four star prices you will be disappointed, the hotel is very clean and the sheets and towels are changed everyday. However there is no swimming pool or balconys.
The bar is only open from 5pm onwards and guests staying at the hotel have to have dinner in the grand hotel.(the sister hotel). There is a time slot and that is from half 8 until half 9, if you try and get in before then they will turn you away! Dress code is required for men but not for women, it also felt like we were put in the back of the restuarant. Guests staying in the la vita hotel are exempt from the italian and chinese restuarants.
Breakfast is very basic, they dont serve toast, or a proper full english breakfast!
Location of the hotel is excellent, the beach is right outside and the bars and restuarants are a short walk away.
Definately a place to visit again but not in the same hotel.
If you are looking to book this hotel, make sure it is not a four star price you are paying as you will be disappointed, also try to book the grand hotel as it was much better.

Just returned from a week holiday at La Vita hotel. Firstly DO NOT expect a 4* hotel by British standards. The hotel in basic both outside and inside, although clean. The staff don't appear overly friendly, and the breakfast was as expected - continental (with hot eggs/cereal etc). The facilities available at the Grand (literally across the road) were brilliant. Nice pool (choice of three), internet, phone, bars, etc etc. However when on a HB the restaurant was pretty poor. As a guest from the La Vita you can only eat between 8-30 til 9-30, and seemed to be seated in the corner of the dining room, as if a second class citizen!. The buffet provided an adequate choice but was repetitive. Not a problem for us as our intention was to eat out every night (highly recommended - read on) but others who wished to use the hotel restaurant every night were not impressed to say the least.

As for the location - EXCELLENT. Please read on for what we believe to be some helpful tips for a great holiday in Rhodes Town:

1. Pay for your own transfers to/fm airport. It is cheaper than coach transfer (pre-booked) around 16 euros each way.

2. Hotel is a great location, opposite beach. However the beach directly outside the hotel is exposed to fairly strong winds, although the beach about 5 min walk round the corner (eastern side) is great.

3. Superb location 10 min walk from the Old Town, of which we LOVED. Picturesque, great atmosphere, loads to see, shops, bars, restaurants etc. We defy anyone not to enjoy it!

4. In particular we loved, Rustica at the top of Socratous road?? Near the clock tower. Particularly the local dish - Stamna. Excellent food, friendly staff, romantic setting, and reasonably priced.

5. There is a Finnish restaurant just down from the hotel (out door turn left - 100m) fantastic for lunch's. Well we ate there 5 out of 7 lunchtimes!!!. (Pita Gyros/Greek Salad and water all for 12 euros for the 2 of us)

6. If you decide to do any of the day trips Marmaris/Lindos/Diving etc. Go down to the harbour and book it yourself. We saved over 40 euros to those who chose to book through the tour rep at the introductory meeting!!!.

7. Thanks to another tripadvisor visitor who advised to take the magnet off the room door key! Genius. We did so and needless to say came back to a lovely air conditioned cool room every night ;-)

8. Not going to venture in the grounds of libel but, beware unscrupulous Tour Operators/Companies who have young lads posted on what seemslike every other street corner with scratch cards. They will give you flannel about how this is advertising and that you have won something great (a free holiday, beach CD player or similar) and then try to bundle you into a free taxi to collect your prize. All you have to do is to give 90 Minutes of your time for some advertising spiel. SAVE YOURSELVES THE BOTHER.......it is pointless and will just eat into your well earned holiday time.

Finally, not sure if it was just the week we went, but there was a distinct lack of British tourists. So this probably isn't the place if you want to meet other Brits, and drink in Brit bars etc. As they say...."when in rome....."

In summary, Rhodes is great, the hotel suited our needs perfectly, just somewhere to lay our heads. Had we wanted to eat there everynight we might be writing a very different review.

Thoroughly loved Rhodes - good luck, happy holidays.

As stated in previous reviews the rooms at La Vita don’t have balconies but as we knew that before we booked I’m not going to criticise it for that. I thought the rooms were very clean and were certainly not what I would class as small. In our room we had twin beds, fitted wardrobes with drawers and safe (35 euro for two week), dressing table with drawers, two bedside cabinets, table, chair, fridge,tv and air conditioning. Power to the room goes of when you remove the key fob from the holder which means the air con goes off. We used to take the room key of the fob on an evening and leave the fob so the room was nice and cool when we returned after a night out. The bathroom was of a reasonable size and also very clean.

Breakfast is taken in La Vita dining room which can get very busy although we only ever had to wait a couple of minutes to get a table. The breakfast was the usual mix of “English” and continental style breakfast.

We were half-board so the evening meals are taken at the 5-star Grand around the corner. This was a self service buffet style arrangement. You have to queue to be shown to a free table. The longest we waited was 20 minutes. The food was very good with plenty of choice and variety and the menu changed daily. As well as the self service restaurant the Grand also has an Italian and Chinese restaurant. These have to be booked the day before dining and there is no additional charge if you are staying at the Grand but you have to pay if staying at La Vita.

La Vita has no pool but as stated when you book you can use the facilities at the Grand. They have two pools, one at the front of the hotel and one at the back.

You have to vacate rooms at 12 noon on the day of your departure. As our flight was not until 3am the following morning we paid to keep our room on until 6pm the cost of which was 35 euro.

La Vita is ideally placed for the beach and local bars and restaurants. For those who like their bars on the lively side then “bar street” is on 5 minutes walk away. A walk to the old town and harbour will take about 15 minutes.

I would class La Vita as 3 star not 4 and the Grand as 4 star and not 5. On the whole very good. We would stay there again.

The rooms are ok,clean but the airconditioning doesn't work properly in any room, you don't really feel anything when it's turned on.The maides are comming in the room without knocking on the door. The receptionist ( all of them ) were not friendly, barely said a word and no smileing. The morning food was ok but everyday the same. The evening food that was served at the grand hotel was excelent. We had no sea view and most of them don't have. The hotel is barely 2 star. Rhodos is a boring town,if you stay more then 3 days you have nothing to do. You see the medieval town and some rocks and that's it. It's not worth paying for more then 4 days to stay there. Even if you go on boat trips which are a real pain in the [--] as you balance yourself 2 hrs to see nothing,or another piece of rock, are awfull . The main point is, this is not a great place to party or to see anything, only to get drunk and lay on the beach like a turtle in the very hot sun and a very STRONG Wind...so windy we almost lost our clothes on the beach. Go to Spain or a country where you have what to see not here. 4 days are more then enough and that hotel is rather empty and doesn;t have anything to offer.

When we pulled up outside the LaVita our hearts sank. To be honest, it looks a lot worse from the outside than it does from within... shabby and dated with no balconies. But we believe you get what you pay for, and we had got this really cheap with sunstarleisure.com (who I now believe have gone bust!).

Once inside, the check-in/bar area was quite nice and smart. We went to our room which, athough smallish, was clean and tidy with a nice bathroom. No balcony but effective air-con with a view onto the decrepit building next door.. No main problems though.

The breakfast was OK. The cereal and cooked option were crap, but there was a nice selection of Danish pastries, and a tray of hot, freshly cooked doughnuts appeared as we sat down so I felt there was a decent choice.

Rhodes Town itself was fantastic. Here, you are in a fab location for the new town, with bars, restaurants and shops all around. The old town is a lovely 10min walk around the bay, with plenty of bars, cafes and eateries. Not many "resorts" have Marks & Spencers and Chanel, LaCoste etc within, but Rhodes Town is an important city in its own right, with a gorgeous harbour, park and castle. The castle which is illuminated at night, is surrounded by flowers, and is beautiful and full of history.

We took a boat trip to Lindos, but did not venture further than the wonderful beach where we spent an entire day snorkelling. We had planned to walk up and see the acropolis, but found the overworked donkeys too upsetting.

If you get a good deal at the LaVita, please go. It's not luxurious, but nobody's proclaiming it is. The location is great and Rhodes Town is one of the best European resorts we've ever stayed in.
