Just a 15 minute walk up a hill behind the Rhodos Horizon Resort is this great little amphitheater, well worth a visit.

The whole area is fantastic, there are many interesting things to see and i wish i had more time to spend there! In the stadium you can almost sense the ancient crowd watching, and i wanted to run and scream out loud how nice i feel...The ancient theater is fantastic too. It was a very hot and humid day when we visited, and i took my t-shirt off, but the guard forced me to wear it. I still can not understand why, since this is an open area and there were many men with out shirts just few steps away, on the nearby street. I really think local authorities should re-write some of the rules accordingly, for such places.

Though not famous as the Old Town or Lindos, The Ancient Olympic Stadium is an interesting attraction of Rodos. It is near the temple of Apollo and can be reached by walking from Rodos Town. No entrance fees, very big area and there is a small museum with free entrance. If you go more up after the Temple of Apollo, you can enjoy the amazing view of Ixia Bay from Monte Smith.

The ancient Olympic Stadium is located in the Acropolis of Rhodes on Monte Smith Hill. The Haleion Games, in honor of the god Helios, were once held here. The site was initially restored by the Italians during their occupation of the island in the early half of the 1900’s. Official and spectator seating has survived. We noticed modern day Rhodians like to have their morning walk here! A petite marble theatre (Odeion) is located next to the stadium. It held approx. 800 spectators, most likely for musical and theatrical performances. It has been heavily restored and not much remains from the original structure. If you like steps, it’s a good workout to the top.

The stadium is remarkably well preserved and is well worth a visit. Many people will only see it briefly through the window of the many tourist buses who stop briefly at the roadside for photographs before going farther up the hill to stop at the Acropolis.

The Acropolis has better views over the town, but is in much poorer condition and, in my opinion, the stadium is much more impressive.

It is simply huge, as well as being in remarkably good condition, and you can get a very strong sense of history by sitting in one of the seats and using a little imagination!

Be aware that there are no toilets and very little information on display at the moment. Children from the local school also play on part of the site at break time. It can also be extremely hot- we visited in late October just after midday and had to immediately head for the shady area at the far end. Make sure you take water!

An added bonus is that you will see a wide variety of lizards!
