“good holiday but a bit out of the way”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 June 2014

Just returned from a weeks stay at ilayssos bay. Found the hotel spotless. The rooms were very spacious and cleaned every day. Food was good but very repetitive would have struggled with variety if staying any longer than a week. The lady in charge of the dining room was lovely. Always welcomed you into the dining room and made a point of asking how you were doing which I thought was a nice touch. Reception staff were friendly and helpful. Found the booking of sunbeds a bit annoying as it clearly states in the hotel information sheet given to us when we arrived that it was not allowed but we had a pool view and every morning when we woke up and looked out there were beds with towels on them with no one there. We usually ended up behind the pool in the grass area. This will be a huge problem in the height of the summer and needs to be dealt with.
The entertainment staff worked hard with a variety of games etc during day and quiz nights, Greek dancing and karaoke in the evenings. As the hotel was out of the way it would have been nice to see some professional acts brought it. We visited Rhodes town and lindos on our trip both places were amazing. Will return to Rhodes but don't think we will be back to ialyassos bay as it was just to far away from everything.

Room Tip: Would recommend a room overlooking the pool

What a fantastic place. Spotlessly clean all round. Spacious. Excellent staff everywhere. Decent drinks including lots of cocktails. Food varied and plentiful. Pool perfect...cleaned automatically overnight which is why some moron didn't see a human pool cleaner! Big plus...only 25 mins from airport. Take no notice of the airplane comments.....they are only audible for 15 secs about a dozen times a day at the most ! Apart from that, they are quite a nice sight. Of course there are ants on the lawn...that's where ants LIVE !!!! Have had lots of holidays over the years, this is the best we've had in this part of the world.

We booked this hotel through Thomson, a first for us as we usually book through one of the online travel sites, but thought for the price (around £350 each) this seemed very good value and the reviews were mainly positive.
we arrived about 1am and were checked in and told there was some soup in the restaurant which was a nice touch. we were with our two daughters so had two rooms next to each other on the first floor, the rooms were as described in all the other reviews, two singles together and a good sized room (beds were a bit hard for us though!) our daughters room had an extra bed which they liked as they then didn't have to sleep 'together' The bathroom was modern and clean, so all ok there. rooms were cleaned & mopped daily and we had no problems at all, there was a fridge which was handy as we brought water so that kept it cold. T.V just had Sky news in English so would have been nice to have a couple more channels as sometimes it was too hot to sit out so we chilled in our room,

We went to the 'welcome meeting' and met Ruben our rep who was around a lot throughout the week and always cheerful and happy to answer any questions. we booked the 2 1/2 cities tour, yes we had to be picked up at 7am but it was only a 2 min walk up the road and there was a selection of cakes / pastries / rolls & coffee to eat before we left, so plenty for that time in the morning, the trip to Lindos was amazing and the reason for leaving so early is that it is 5 deg hotter than in Rhodes so when we arrived at 8.30 am it was already 32 deg, so they get there early and then can leave before it gets too hot, the trip then ended in Rhodes Old Town which was also amazing, I am sure if you looked around you could have got it cheaper but we were happy with booking direct with Thomson, we also booked a trip round the bay on a glass bottom boat and our daughter booked a cruise from Faliraki and really enjoyed it.

The food, always an issue with A/I we have been to several holidays on A/I and i can honestly say this was the best we have had, breakfast was a choice of cooked fry up, cold meats, cereal, bread / rolls with jams as well as cooked to order eggs and some days there were waffles or pancakes. For lunch / tea as well as the usual selection of pasta, rice, chicken, fish & chips there were many Greek dishes, yes of course they have to 'recycle' certain foods and they many ways they do this is impressive, we had many dishes that i have never had at a 3/4 star A/I such as muscles & sushi and desserts were not the usual 'sploge' there were proper cakes, jelly, cheese & mouses, and there were always two choices of soup and there was an assortment of breads and rolls. There was not much choice if you wanted a snack between meals, chips and baguette rolls with ham / cheese and sometimes some cake, but we never found we needed to eat between meals.

Drinks, we did find the soft drinks a bit gassy, but spent most of the time drinking the cocktails as there was a good selection and very nice, everyone should realize that on A/I it is only non branded drinks that are available, but there is still plenty of choice and my husband was quite happy with the beer they served! and even the alcohol free cocktails were tasty!

we did have an issue with mozzies, never had a problem before, but on about the 3rd day we had all been bitten to bits, we were just above a large tree and I asked at reception if we could move rooms as i believed they had come from the tree when we had been sitting on our balcony on an evening, reception were very helpful and moved us the following day, though we could not get two rooms together, we were moved to the 2nd floor and made sure we shut the patio doors on an evening! we did still get more bites and this did put a dampner on the holiday, but we brought some spray and gel to put on the bites,

As for what people have been saying about the extra charges, every hotel we have stayed in has always charged for a safe and for late checkout of the room, E20 (& E20 deposit) for the safe & E30 to keep the room till 6pm, we did get a safe but didn't bother with the room as we were not being collected till 11pm we would still have had 5 hours without, We were able to keep using the A/I after we had checked out, so that was good,

The location we found just a little far out, it was just a few minutes walk to the bus stop and the buses were regular, E2.20 each way to Rhodes Town, or taxi for E15, our eldest made some friends and used to go clubbing in Rhodes town after the A/I drinks finished, they got a taxi and said the nightlife was very good!
we like a walk in the evening and Ialyssos town was about 20 mins walk, when you get to the end of the road by the chemist turn left to Ialyssos and if you turn right, a bit longer walk maybe half hour and there was another 'town' with shops & bars and a pretty church.

The entertainment was quite good considering there was just 3 people to entertain everyone, but they were not pushy, if you wanted to join in they welcomed you and if you didn't that was fine too, on the evening there was kids disco, but was mostly teaching the kids the moves to the party songs and playing games with them, but the kids enjoyed it. then there was greek dancing, quizzes, karaoke, ect - all quite fun to watch!

We did wander onto the beach but had read before hand that it was pebbly, though there was always plenty of people that didn't seem to mind.

Sunbeds - huge problem with people putting towels on them, i would have loved to collect them all & throw in the pool! we always found some to sit on but so many stayed empty all day, they really need to get this sorted as in the height of summer there will not be enough beds.

sorry no real order to this review, just wrote as I thought of stuff, but overall we had a really nice time, hotel good, food great, staff helpful, some people expect 5 star perfection at a 3 star price, would I go again, no, but only because there are many other places to see not because we didn't like it.

If you are going to this hotel as long as you do not expect perfection / 5 star luxury you will have a great time so go & enjoy yourself

Room Tip: we had a pool view both times and we had the sun in the morning, but it didn't last long.

Just got back from a weeks all-inclusive stay at this hotel. In brief:

Positives

- great food, plenty of choice, chefs worked hard

- clean, spacious rooms cleaned everyday. Towels changed every few days. Floors not wiped every day which was sometimes but not always a problem.

- staff very helpful and friendly. We rented a car through the hotel for one day (€49) and had no problems or difficulties (as this was the first time we had rented a car abroad we were a little nervous)

- hotel is a 5 min walk away from the main road where you can catch a bus towards Rhodes town. Very good, regular service.

- nice pool area (but pool a little small for the number of guests)

Negatives

- we stayed on the third floor in a sea view room, which we thought was an advantage being away from the loud entertainment around the pool area...but were woken up almost every night by loud/drunk people staggering to their rooms around 12.30am.

- although the food options are great the drinks are not so good. All soft drinks are local brands lacking in taste or too sugary

- we knew before booking that the west coast of the island was more windy and the beaches not so attractive: hotel beach 50m walk away was very disappointing. Very pebbly/dusty. Looked nice from our room though! Would recommend traveling to the east coast for a more pleasant beach experience. The main beach in Lindos is a must.

Overall we had a very enjoyable stay at ialyssos bay. We won't be returning to this place - due to it's location. The west coast of Rhodes is a little disappointing but that did not ruin our holiday and shouldn't take away the tremendous hard work of the staff who made our stay pleasant and enjoyable.

Me and my boyfriend wanted a quick get away and after paying a large price and reading the hotel reviews we were expecting a lot from this hotel. Although the hotel did exceed our expectations in some areas it lacked in others.

Good points:

The hotel is well located if you want to get out and about by yourselves. There are many local attractions around. The food is outstanding and the chef is very good. All hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. The hotel is spotlessly clean and the rooms are cleaned everyday. The hotel also offers a large lounge space. Rooms are equipped with the main features however also include a spacious king sized bed and much loved air conditioning

Bad points

The hotel entertainment was mediocre! But as we are a young couple luckily staying in and watching the hotel entertainment was not our priority. The drinks tasted very cheap mixers were not of main brands and the beer and spirits were of poor quality. As I have noticed on other reviews I was not the only one to feel intimidated by a group of young polish guys at the resort who acted inappropriately and were a nuisance to everyone. I feel the hotel staff did not handle them well. We were surprised by additional costs such as €30 to have a safe and an additional €30 deposit on the safe, our plane did not leave until late afternoon and so we had to pay €30 to extend our time a few extra hours. Beach towels also come at a cost so I would suggest taking your own, it's also €8 per day to rent a sun lounger on the beach. Although it's not the hotel fault the beach was not sandy, very dirty and not suited to younger children.

Tips and places to visit

As we are an active couple we spent most days out and about enjoying what the island has to offer. We were surprised by the variety of things we could do.

Most days we rented a quad bike (€25 per day) we found this was the cheapest mode of transport and also gave us the freedom to go wherever we like. This proved to be much cheaper than the Thomson excursions. We also found that the beaches on the east side of the island were a million times better than the hotel side (west). We enjoyed visiting:

Butterfly valley
Monastery kalopetras - it is at the top of butterfly valley, try the yogurt, honey, donuts and orange juice, it is the best!
Seven springs
Afantou bay - a really nice calm beach with crystal clear waters.
Monastery tsampika - one of our favourites, it's a long climb to one of the highest points on the island, some breathtaking views and a beautiful myth behind the monastery. (This is a must see)
Charaki - follow the signs for feraklos castle and the golden sands signs, after the castle you will find a remote cove which is possibly the best beach in rhodes the shallow, crystal clear waters are a must see.
Lindos - although it is a high tourist town (which is what we tend to stay away from) you cannot deny that lindos isn't the most beautiful spot of the island, the very Greek styled village offers brilliant photo opportunities and a chance to but souvenirs for friends and family back home.

I would suggest if you want to make the most of your stay, keep active, don't get ripped of by thomson excursions, most of the island is accessible and well signed.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room.

We spent 10 fantastic fun filled days and nights at the lalysoss Bay Hotel, we have no complaints whatsoever! And have booked again for September!
I have read some of the reviews since i have returned, and cannot believe how petty and awkward some of the guests must be, no wonder the staff do not feel like engaging with them! We found all the staff to be very helpful and smiley, i suppose it depends on what kind of attitude you approach them with, i certainly would not smile at the people who have written some of the awful reviews.

The food was great, very tasty, always something different, and a wide choice available, as soon as something ran out it was restocked straight away. Julia the restaurant manager, was excellent at her job and was always pleasant and helpful, as were all the restaurant staff. We kept saying that we were going to eat out one evening, but never did as we were frightened of missing whatever was being served at the hotel.

Cocktail hour started straight after breakfast for me, lounging around the pool, until bed time,!!!! and i have got a taste for mojito's now ;-) Our favourite bar man Arthur, was efficient and friendly and always there smiling.

Room service came every day, changing towels and cleaning the floor, and they changed the bedding every 3 days, i was mightily impressed at the way they arranged my nightie on the bed, and even took a photo of it, lol its these small touches that make a big difference!

And now to the entertainment team, as it was early in the season they were a team of 3 Dan, Caroline and Jello (Yella) These guys kept everyone going and entertained for the whole duration of our holiday, We thought they were all fantastic people and are really looking forward to seeing them all again in September. The day kicked of at around 11am with Aqua fit in the pool, very entertaining to watch even if you don't feel like joining in, then there were games of volleyball, football, water polo etc throughout the day. The evening entertainment started with a kids disco from around 8 til 9pm, then there were quizzes, mystery who-dunnits, Mr & Mrs competitions, traditional Greek dancers, Latin dancers, and even Dan who has got a brilliant voice, put on a whole show by himself, the free drinks are served until midnight, but the bar stays open until 2am, the town is a 5 minute walk away, with various tavernas, shops and sports bars, the beach was only 1 minute from the hotel, where there were sunbeds and parasols available fo hire for 8 euros per day (2 beds, 1 parasol) there is also a lovely beach bar called Patty's which served great food at a very reasonable price in the evenings.

A full American breakfast consists of, bacon, fried eggs, boiled eggs, sausages, mushrooms tomatoes, beans, and everything else you would expect to find, they have waffles and pancakes a couple of days a week too, as well as all the continental breakfast items, i took my own PG Tips as i had heard that the tea and coffee wasn't too brilliant,i also took a travel kettle as there are no facilities in the room, and i do like my early morning cup of tea on the balcony, there was a fridge to keep the milk in.

All in all i would recommend this holiday to anyone who is friendly, nice and normal, and looking for a hassle free relaxing holiday in the sun, with food and drinks constantly available, friendly staff and spotlessly clean what more could you ask for??

I have just returned from a week’s Holiday with my Wife, we had a pleasant stay at the Ialyssos Bay Hotel. There are many reviews on here complaining about food quality and service but unfortunately generally you get what you pay for. At best, this is a three star hotel, I managed to get a very good late deal for a very reasonable discounted rate, I would not like to pay full brochure prices to stay here.

The staff at this hotel cannot do enough for you, from the Receptionists, Chamber Maids, Restaurant staff (and Chef) to Bill the Barman. They all work hard to ensure you have a great time, if you want something just ask. I always found them really friendly and happy, always asking if we were having a nice time and if things were OK.

Reception and general hotel public areas are modern and well maintained and cleaned, the Bar area looked a bit dated but was OK. The pool is the old fashioned type with a deep and a shallow end, we found this area a bit cramped with sunbeds all on top of each other, unfortunately the British custom of placing towels on beds when the sun rises was well enforce at the Ialyssos Bay. The pool area is great for younger adults or families, the grass area was also small and not well maintained. We chose to visit the beach each day and pay 8 euros a day for two beds and a shade, it would have been nice if the hotel had a beach area as the hotels either side do.

Restaurant, the food is of good quality and variety, with every trick used to bulk out dishes and recycle. If you are not fussy there will always be something there for you, grilled fish, a burger bar and many trays of food and salad. The big issue was the lack of change from Lunch to Dinner and Day to Day, that said if you wanted something that was not on the menu/display the Chief would cook it fresh for you. Breakfast was a good mix of usual morning food, again all good quality.

Bars, there are two bars, one by the pool open all day and during the evening entertainment and one in the lobby of the hotel from 6:30 each evening. The hotel bar was managed by one barman (Bill) who managed to serve very quickly and keep the queues down. If you sat at the bar and dropped the odd tip you didn’t need to queue Bill would provide another drink as you were close to empty, again if you provided small tip now and then the 2 drink rule was flexible.

Night-time entertainment was not great with no sign of professional acts, however, the in-house team did work hard to keep you entertained night and day.

Rooms are basic but modern, a king sized bed with TV but not much draw space and although there was a large space for a sofa or table and chairs none were provided inside the room. Bathroom was standard but without the extras you would expect of a 4 star hotel, it has a travel lodge type dispenser for soap and that’s it. Throughout our stay the room was cleaned to a high standard and clean towels and sheets regularly provided.

The mix of guests appeared to be an even split between UK, German and Dutch visitors but with the largest amount coming from Poland. The Polish did not mix as the rest did and appeared mainly to drink heavily and not smile. There was a problem with a group of young polish lads and the hotel did not appear to cope or gain control of the situation, I was pleased we were leaving when we did.

A downside to this hotel is the airplane noise, its mentioned in previous reviews but I would not describe it as beneath the flight path but as being under the landing path. We had a sea view room, from the balcony you could view the planes passing by at between 300 to 500 feet, at the weekend 4 an hour till midnight and the first in the morning at about 7am. These don’t impact much if you are out and about having fun but if you happen to be ill one night or go to bed early be warned.

All in all a good budget holiday was had, if only the hotel was in another location 
