this hotel is nowhere near a 4* - even by greek standards . please read all the reviews and take note - I wish we had ... the whole place is rundown and really third rate - the owners are penny pinching all the time and the hotel is in the middle of nowhere. having travelled all over Greece for the last 30 odd years I can honestly say this is the most disappointing place I have ever stayed . the famous greek hospitality is sadly lacking - the staff work so hard but are knocked back by the owners .the Thomas cook rep neil must have a hell of a time - during our 2 week stay it was hard to talk to him due to the queues of people complaining - we arrived at 4 am and were told there were no rooms for us - moved to another hotel miles away - got picked up next day (late) and were taken back and shown a room with the patio door broken ,the curtains hanging off the wall and worst of all the bathroom ceiling leaking sewage from the room above . didn't unpack - went straight to the rep to complain - join the queue= got moved after a fight . the swimming pool area sunbeds are mostly broken and when myself and other guests started to move all the dangerous ones we gave up at 25 ! the food is average , the beer and wine ect is watered down and served by overworked staff . I could go on forever but don't book and expect a 4* this 2.5 to 3* at the very best - I see Thomas cook have just laid off lots of staff - we wont go with them again as they should regrade hotels like this .

Room Tip: go to another hotel as this one isnt

Awful, spent a week here. Room was awful, in blocks, council estate in the sun, food just as bad. Lucky if there is any bread some days, butter if they remember. Flies in the dining room, playground was a death trap. The only barman was very rude, drinks watered down or very low strength, entertainment not bad, they did the best with what they had. After breakfast you couldn't even get a coffee until after 11am. Broken sunbeds, pool area not cleaned, TV rubbish reception, why bother putting tv's in rooms when the reception is fuzzy, just awful, really awful, I've only given it a one because i can't give it any less.not what we are used to. Middle of nowhere, Awful. Photos in Brochure are photoshopped or something. Even the sign on the front of the hotel is different when you get there. Awful.

Room Tip: Book somewhere else.

the golden odyssey is not really a 4 star hotel even by greek standards
but i think it is on par with most of the 2 / 3 star hotels on the greek islands

i think the tour operators have a lot to do with the grading
and they are the one's that complaints should be aimed at as they have to vet the hotels on a regular basis

we went in october and found the hotel and area very quiet as should be expected at the end of the season as most of the hotels will be winding down

hotel was very clean and the rooms were cleaned every day

food and drink was a bit basic but a resanable amount of choice

beach was a little further than in the brochure

staff were very good and friendly and try to please

i think we did all right when you look at what a second week costs compared to just one week
about £100 for the second week, take out the tour operators mark up and it looks as if the hotel gets
around £10 per day for an all inclusive package in october

generally i would suggest that if you want first class food and service a budget all inclusive holiday
will cost much more these days compaired to pre euro holidays

this is my findings of budget package holidays but if you want a basic holiday with no frills
then a budget package will suit you and you could do a lot worse than the golden odyssey

Room Tip: room around the pool can get very hot as the sun pitches around the pool most of the day

my partner and i were at the golden odyssey in july. it is the fist time we have ever gone all inclusive and all we can say is that we would never do it again!! this hotel is not what we expected from a 4 star hotel. when we originally booked it stated that local alcoholic drinks and soft drinks were available from 11am but infact the only thing that was available was full sugar soft drinks, larger and wine. spirits are refused until 5pm. when you can finally get a local spirit you will find that it is incredibly watered down. there was only 1 barman on the bar the entire night so getting a drink meant standing at the bar for about 20 minutes and then being spoken to very rudely by the barman. also, we had to move to 3 different rooms because the aircon didn;t work. Food was farely poor. For lunch they offered the same thing each day, pizza, chips, pasta (not very greek) breakfast was very poor also, warm milk and not a large selection of food unless you like random things like onion rings or sweetcorn when you first get up. The rooms are very basic, and one of the rooms we had even had a plug socket hanging out of the wall. The only good things about the hotel are that the pool was very nice (apart from the fact that there is a very limitted amount of sun beds). the entertainment staff made our holiday. they were fun and so lovely and they really did everything they could to make the activities fun during the day and night. last year we stayed in a 2* apartment in crete and it was 100 times better than this hotel. It needs down grading. We found out when we were there that they actually get half a star because they have a gym, the gym that they infact have is a broken down tredmill and 1 exercise bike. very laughable!! the hotel rep was not very helpful to resolve any of our issues and the hotel manager was just plain rude. i'd avoid the hotel at all costs!!

THINK TWICE BEFORE BOOKING THIS HOTEL

Well where do I start, we didn't believe some of the things people had complained about.
On arrival, we were allocated room 136,at 4am in morn we opened our balcony door to have a look what we'd be getting up to every morn and the smell of drains knocked us back and a continuous loud humming sound from loads of air con fans on a roof outside our room. My partner went straight down to see the night porter to get us moved but he could do nothing till next day. We tried to have a sleep but couldn't, as soon as you put you head on pillow the buzzing was coming up through our beds. We changed rooms at 2pm next day, rooms are very tired and old fashioned formica cladding pealing off furniture frontage and broken holders on wall in bathroom to hold shower heads. When we booked this hotel we were assured it was a four star and is also advertised in the Olympic Book as a 4 star Hotel. Absolutely Rubbish it wouldn't make a three Star.
When you go to the pool after breakfast which for us was about half nine you then have to sit and wait until 11 am when they open the pool bar for tea, coffee wine or beer or soft drinks. Be careful of broken sun beds too.In our Olympic paperwork it said nothing about NOT being able to have a Short until 5-30pm when bar opens mmm must have been another Golden Oddy rule.

Bar
Beware you have the most ignorant bar man ever serving you and he gives you or NOT what he wants to give you. His name was Antonio one evening at 10 45 i went to the ladies room and on the way back i stopped at the bar to get a drink for us both oh by the way you can only order one drink at a time(Antonio s rules), I ordered a beer and a bacardi and coke for myself he had the nerve to look over at our table and refused to give me another drink and luckely the owners son was at the end of the bar ,he made him pour them for me. Iv never seen so much rudeness from staff when at the end of the day they woudn,t have a job if we didn,t have a holiday. All he,s bothered about is 11pm coming round so he can charge you BE WARNED.

Worst of all was the food, only seen bacon twice even after complaint was made. Lunch had to be taken at Pool Bar Chips, Salad MAIN COURSE Onion rings yes you,ve read right every single day the same ----,fish fingers, pizza, pasta, and if you were lucky you might have got some chiken bits. Im afraid to say evening dinner wasn,t much better. Soup every night COLD,if they put veal at the start of the evening and it had gone then god help those that came in after half seven the chefs and waitresses just used to stand about talking amongst their selves most of the time. Good Luck to all that have booked it is our worst holiday ever. FOUR STAR NOT BE WARNED! ! !

Hotel: Golden Odyssey
Location: Kolymbia, Rhodes
Holiday type: All inclusive
Holiday taken in mid September, 2012
Room: Garden view, main building

This holiday was booked about a week before leaving on Lastminute.com.

The Golden Odyssey Hotel was built in 1992, and is rated with 5 'T' stars in the brochure, and as an A rating by the Hellanic Tourist Authority. Transfer from the airport to the hotel was uneventful and the bus was air-conditioned. The welcome at the desk was fine, and the formalities completed without delay.

The hotel has a range of facilities, including a small shop and a reasonably sized swimming pool which looked clean and sparkling. There was a crack near the base of a giant mushroom feature in the pool - a possible source of water-born infection. In general, the infrastructure around the pool was satisfactory.

Food was plentiful and varied. If you are expecting traditional English dishes such as fish and chips, you should consider another hotel. The same goes for traditional Greek dishes, although sometimes these were available. For the most part, the food would be more typical of continental hotels. Breakfast and dinner were served in the restaurant, which was clean and efficiently tidied by the friendly staff. It was a self-service arrangement, and there was no apparent limit on how much you could have. Lunch was a self-service meal available from a bar-side servery. I thought the food was quite well cooked, but not very interesting. Local soft drinks and alcohol were availble free until 2300, after which it was chargeable until the bar closed at 0100.

The hotel is located about 1.5 miles (2.4km) distance from Kolymbia village, which was a pleasant walk mostly along Euchalyptus tree-lined roads. The beach is a bit closer, but the hotel does run their bus to and fro the beach during the day. There are plenty of eating and drinking places both in the village, and along the route to it, many of them very reasonably priced.

The few children at the hotel during my stay seemed to be enjoying themselves in the pool, but there is probably little else to amuse them otherwise. These were quite young children, perhaps up to about 12 years old. Older teenagers would find it too quiet, I would think. There were competitions such as darts and boules (petanque) organised during the afternoon which anyone around the pool area was invited to join in with, and a form of water polo was played in the pool sometimes. There was nightly entertainment available. There was a simple organised exercise session available after lunch.

My room was very basic - certainly not 5 star! It had a firm double divan style bed, with two very firm deep pillows, plus one spare in the wardrobe. Air conditioning was quiet and effective, and totally under my control, unlike some hotels I have stayed in. There was little furniture; no comfy seating, just one basic padded stool. (Public areas have plenty of comfy seating.) There was a telephone which was enabled to ring other rooms etc., again, unlike some hotels where this is not possible on the room 'phone. The bathroom was adequate, and contained a bath with shower head over it. All the fittings were rather worn and the bath plug mechanism almost impossible to operate - even with dry hands, let alone when wet and slippery. As the bath plug mechanism wouldn't close completely, it wasted a lot of water, which is a precious commodity on Rhodes, according to notices pasted in the bathroom.

Room maintenance was prompt; I had a light bulb burn out, and it was replaced quite promptly.

The chambermaid did a good job of servicing the room each day.

Altogether, the hotel was rather tired, and could do with a thorough refurbishment.
