“A nice family hotel”
Reviewed 31 May 2013

Just spent 10 days at the Mikri Poli Family Resort, Kolimbea.
Lots of good and bad points to this hotel, so here goes...

There are 5 fantastic pools all with plenty of sun beds around plus there is a waterpark within the hotel complex. There are 4 bars (inc 1 on the beach) served limited drinks) and 2 restaurants. The Laurel restaurant is very much like the usual all-inclusive buffet style. Food was fine, plenty of choice and always hot. Lots of salads & veggie options too. Little kids section too which was great. The Pool bar restaurant is only open 3 nights a week and you must book in advance at reception to dine in there onTues, Thurs or Sat - first time is free but thereafter you have to pay 2 euros pp.. This is also self service but is greek BBQ themed and the food is very good. Snacks were served daily from the Pool bar restaurant, the usual pizza, chips, salads, spaghetti etc all ok if you didn't want to venture up to the restaurant (as no costumes allowed in there).

The complex itself is excellent and very well looked after. The main pool area is where all the activity is,as it's quite close to the reception, restaurant, bar & entertainment amphitheatre. If you have someone who is not so good at walking, then request a room in either starfish or octopus or at least near the main pool. There are various types of rooms, some with a seperate bedroom, some with a sliding doors. We booked the sliding door room and actually got a 1 bed apartment in Starfish (room 212) which had a huge balcony getting the sun all day, facing the sea and the mountains (we had a beautiful view). The rooms have a kettle, fridge & hairdryer. The air conditioning is 6 euros per day but it is necessary (especially at night) so worth the money.

The animation team work tirelessly to keep everyone entertained with various sporty events both in and out of the pool. Well done to Luka, Manou, Anna & the team for keeping us entertained. The kids are really the ones that are entertained the most, culminating in the usual kids disco from 8.30pm every night. After this, there is the usual fun and games on stage or a professional show with traditional Greek dancers in the amphitheatre.

What was wrong with the hotel? Well nothing really, it simply just lacked English holiday makers which was such a shame as it was ideal for a nice relaxing getaway. We had our 13 year old son with us who was a little lonely but he still enjoyed himself immensely. The hotel is about 10 minutes walk to the nearest shops, bars and restaurants and 2 minutes from the beach (extremely rocky) so not great for those looking for a beachy holiday.

For what we paid, it was a bargain so defintely worth it. Not many English there but all in all, we had a great time.

Room Tip: If you want to be near to everything then ask for rooms in Starfish or Octopus (101-124 ground floor...

We stayed for 2 weeks 6/8 - 20/8, two adults, two children aged 17 and 13. The animation team made our holiday, we would not have enjoyed our holiday half as much without them.

The Animation Team - amazing, they made our holiday extra special, my husband and 17yr old son were constantly occupied with different sporting activities every day, always varied and very entertaining. The evening entertainment was great, they made us laugh from start to end, we found Oskar hilarious, the best. Vadim, Luka and Ana were also great entertainers and thoroughly enjoyed their work, amazing team. If you didnt want to join in though you were never pressured, just left to enjoy your relaxation.

Beach (Very pebbly) - a short walk across road - although it was Mikri Poli beach we were charged 2 euros for sunbeds - no comment. Beach bar was a help yourself drinks machine, but only served cola, lemonade, water and beer.

The hotel and grounds were very clean and tidy, the pool also cleaned every evening so was also spotless - we used the main pool every day, we did have to put towels out at 7am every morning as there were never enough sunbeds around this pool. The other pools were quiet if you preferred it.

Food - the food was not the best we have experienced on an all-inclusive basis. one evening they served Turkey cubes cooked on the main restaurant grill and when we complained about finding a raw piece, we were surprisingly offered another plate of Turkey from the same grill to replace it - UNBELIEVABLE! The choice also became quite repetitive after the first week, the fact that there is no other restaurants on site doesn't help, when we booked we were told there was an Italian restaurant but later found that it was no longer open. There was the option of a barbecue night, which was free for one night but was charged at a fee of 2 euros per person on other nights, the food wasn't that great and you had to book well in advance, in the 2 weeks we were there we managed just the one night due to a waiting list.

Beverages - you had to pay for cocktails, frappes, milkshakes, pure orange juice and certain coffees, this is a first for us on all-inclusive, the whole point of all-inclusive is all drinks are free, this again we have never experienced on an all-inclusive basis. The all-inclusive option also ended at 11pm, 12 am we would have accepted but as the evening entertainment at the Ampitheatre ended at 10.30pm, the bar was so busy after, most nights you couldn't get a drink unless you paid, as they closed at 11 pm on the dot (sometimes earlier). Also, when do holidaymakers retire to their rooms at 11pm when on their holidays. Constantly ran out of drinking glasses, breakfast and evening meals, very annoying and fizzy drinks/fruit juices were definitely watered down. Ice-cream - served 2 till 6pm, first week there were 4 flavours and good quality, 2nd week only 2 flavours available and they were really poor quality, tasted like water.

The Staff - Georgios (Pool Bar), George (Reception), Nikos (Other Pool) and Philip (Restaurant) were pleasant, always helpful. Tsambikos (Pool Bar)and the Italian looking restaurant manager we found him to be very unpleasant, dreaded going to the pool bar each time he was serving and "Luigi" was ignorant, rude and didn't want to know about any issues - just wanted to shout at his team.

The rooms - we had a family room, very spacious but not the best view, just looked out onto wasteland. Cleaned 6 days a week and towels replaced each time.

We have had many family all-inclusive holidays, in Egypt, Cyprus and various other countries and found Mikri Poli to be very average.

We didn't like Tsampiki Beach but went to Lindos instead and would encourage anyone who likes traditional Rhodes to visit Lindos - Gorgeous!!

We have to finish as we started though by saying how good the animation team were as without Oskar, Vadim, Ana, Luka and his team, we would not have had a great holiday - and we did. Vadim was excellent at arranging the morning and evening sport activities, didn't push you into it if you didn't want to but welcomed all to get involved. Oskar did an amazing job at making Water Polo enjoyabe. He gave each team a different shout when they scored, me and Sam's favourite was "Habla Habla Haaaa". Oskar is the main man on the evening entertainment also and this is where they ALL come to life, but Oskar in particular - each night was different and as you get to know the team, it becomes even more enjoyable. If ever Jim Carey retires, Oskar is the man to take over. Poor Ana gets the rough end of the sketches but you can see that they all love the shows. Vadim gives his all during the Mikri Poli dance. Without the Animation team, Mikri Poli is just an average hotel with good weather!!

I do not know whether to be pissed on our travel organizer "Fritidsresor from Sweden" for their false advertising and very poor customer service, or the hotelets very low standards in everything especially the service and the food.

. The same bad food, lunch and dinner, day in day out. No variation at all.

. Our towels were changed to three days, every time they cleaned the room they fold up our old towels and put them in the bathroom. On the fourth day when I saw that they hadn't changed the towels I called the reception and told them all about it. then came one of the staff back "very annoyed" with new towels and did not even take the old / dirty towels.

. Often there was no tea or coffee after breakfast time, not even milk for the children, when we asked where the milk was (breakfast time) the waitress pointed at a jug next to the coffee machine that contained half ice and half milk.

. On a couple of occasions the staff were in the restaurant and drank soda or ate some sandwiches instead of helping restaurant guests.

and the list continues ...

We have just returned after 1 week at the Mikri Poli hotel. And to be honest, it was an "ok" hotel. The grounds were very clean and the family room was spacious and comfortable.
But after reading on a number of travel company websites including travel republic who we booked through, that there were 3/4 restaurants we were dissapointed that there was infact only 1,maybe 2 if you can call the 1 room by the main pool which serves, pizza, chips spaghetti bolognaise at lunch and bread with cheese or ham the rest of the day. a restaurant?!..... oh and a greek BBQ which is only on 3 nights a week and you have to book. and before you think of a lovely bbq by the beach or pool... its not again its in the pool bar!! food was a little better.
But in laurels the main restaurant, I felt like i was back at school in the school canteen, most the of time!!.... I cant complain about the food though. It always tasted better than it looked! ..... the selection of drinks were fine by the pool, but the beach bar consisted of just apple juice, orange juice, water or beer. All of which came out warm.
The pools were good, and clean. My 2 children found the kids pool great with the 2 slides. And after a few days we found the pool across the rd, by the beach which was fantastic. Much quieter and more space for the children and ourselves to laze on the lilo, jump and splash!! although the only down side was the beach bar was our closest drinks section!... warm water for us unless we crossed the rd, back into the hotel and across to the pool bar ( abit of a mission, but you cant have it all!)
The animation team were fantastic, the mini disco was always the childrens highlights and they all seemed so happy and full of energy, which was a nice change from the rest of the staff, who all seemed rude and grumpy! .... even my 6 yr old mentioned how grumpy they were!

After reading here on trip advisor, about a few little restaurants at the end of the bay, we went out to see what they were like. We caught the little train which collects you from the hotel and runs you into the town which is only a 10 min walk away, but the children loved the train! we got off on the 1st stop and walked straight up past a hotel callled "port royal", at the end, the road forks. Turn left ( right takes you to a great beach) and head down to the sea where you will find a little bar, a fish restaurant and the one we enjoyed most called Meat @ sea.
The staff were lovely, food great and the end bill, very resonable! We then discovered the beach there which was quieter and less stoney. When walking back the next day we cut down the side of the next hotel along from us and then along the beach, rather than through town.

Overall, my main complaints are lack of Restaurant choice, and staff! The rest was fine and a week away in the sun with my family was my main want for the week. ......Oh rent a car and go to Lindos, and rhodes old town, forget Tsmimbika beach, which is crowed and felt like i was 18 and back in Falaraki!

we have just stayed for 1 week at this hotel and loved every minute ,a party of two adults and two 13yrs girls. The main pool area was a hub where laying on new sunbeds or sitting in shade in awaiting to join in on various activities. The main pool was clean and large for enough for all where water polo and aerobics were available, the food was very good with ample choice of salad -hot food and fruit but although food was on offer people will still moan. The rooms were clean and spacious with 1 socket for electric so take adaptor if the ladies want to do hair etc.The grounds were clean and managed well as were the sports facilities and as for the animation team well they were brill,so hard working to get you involved with various sports etc but they did not bother you if you wanted to chill. All in all a lovely hotel for all safe and clean for all ages.

Room Tip: get as close to pool as poss. we stayed in room 239 overlooking pool

We holidayed the last week in July 2012 - 2 adults, 2 teenagers. Hotel reception felt a little like you were in an small out of town shopping precinct, but clean and air-conditioned. There were 4 pools, main one which catered for both adults and children, a separate children's pool located in a quieter area of the complex, a further adult and children pool with bar and a pool in a very quiet location with no bar for both adults and children. Although there is a policy for not reserving sunbeds this was not enforced, but you could still get one at 9am. Restaurant was nicely positioned on first floor with good views. Variety of food was okay, but more for adults. Bolognese appeared to be the only meal available for children every day. Would have liked one or more additional cheeses in the evening to go with the feta. Desserts were mainly jelly, panacotta or mousse, but, the odd sponge did appear. Availability of replacement knives, forks and napkins would have improved service. Beach was approx 100m across a quiet road and was a mixture of coarse sand and pebbles. Beach shoes are a must. On beach facilities were excellent, boardwalks, small hut for drinks, toilet, shower and free sunbeds and parasols. There is a bus stop for the island waterpark (Thu 10am approx) and Rhodes town outside the hotel. Reception staff were excellent, always helpful. Bar staff not so. Waiting staff good. Kolymbia main shopping road approx a short 5-10 min walk. Can be a little scary walking it at night as the pavements do not extend the whole distance and there is little lighting. However, a small road train service is available from the hotel at a small cost. Although, would not recommend the train tour as this is only hotel stops. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would recommend to others.

Room Tip: Luckily we had a room some distance from the main swimming pool/evening entertainment and enjoyed pe...
