Il Saraceno Grand Hotel
Reviewed 24 August 2014

Well.. As I said - it's special. If you are looking for something unusual - go for it, but for a couple of days only. It's a hotel with perfect sea view on the cliff. Private beach and swimming pool. The private beach is something rare at the Amalfi coast - and they do have one (not a platform, but a real strip of the sea shore). It's quite small and sometimes gets crowded - but we are not in Miami (unfortunately). Each room is assigned 2 sun beds and umbrella at no extra cost. You can get coffee and drinks at your subbed if you are that lazy, but the hotel offers a nice restaurant for lunch. Another restaurant serves dinner (though I was not amused). The hotel dates back to 1970 (?) and boasts some nice antique looking furniture, decorations - all very special. Great for romantic getaway. Remember it's not in the city - although they provide a shuttle. The downside is that you can hear EVERYTHING what happens in the room above - I could hear a coin drop and roll... Why did the guests upstairs decided to move furniture at midnight - no idea - perhaps they were haunted by the Saraceno Ghost ???

Situated away from Amalfi, close to Conca dei Marini, and this is, in my opinion, it's main advantage. Complete rest and relaxation away from the tourist crowds and noise of the city. And if there is a mood to have a walk and have a dinner in Amalfi, the hotel provides a free transfer to Amalfi and in return way several times a day. Each hour in the morning and in the evening from hotel to the downtown by the minibus. The driver of the minibus is an extraordinary nice person, in one of our trips he stopped on a route to give us the chance to take a photo of a beautiful city panorama. In our last day he took us with our suitcases to the mooring in Amalfi, having made an additional trip. One sad thing with this transfer - the last trip from Amalfi at 20 PM. After that only a taxi which will cost in average 25 euros. It's about 10 minutes journey.
As I told, some remoteness of the hotel is its advantage. It allows to find a privacy and rest if you need it. I can't say for certain, but probably all the rooms have a sea view, in our room we had a big window (but without terrace). And it was really wonderful to sit in front of a window in a magnificent chair looking to the sea, listening to sounds of the sea and feel a relax. In general, the silence is a great value now. Huge pleasure to wake up in the morning with a birds singing and splash of waves.
The external design of the hotel and its interiors are higher than any praises. It is the real castle on the rock, with ladders, towers and tunnels. It is a real adventure to walk through the territory. You might dicover many cozy places while you're walking down by twisting stone ladders to a beach, also to find absolutely stunning views from there.
All the territory is a nice garden with olive trees, grapes and a lot of flowers.
Huge advantage is an elevators - both in hotel, and to a beach. That one has an intermediate stop at a restaurant on a terrace above the beach.
The beach with the pebble, is is better to have special slippers for swimming.
Sunbeds, umbrellas and towels are free for the guests of the hotel, but it is possible to take only one set of them to one room on the first line in front of the water. There were three of us, and one of us had to sunbathe on the second line or to get over on a platform where it is possible to take any place.
There is a bar and a toilet near the beach, also they have shower and cabin for changing the dress there.
You can take a boat trip to Grotta di Smeraldo from a beach. We paid 15 euros for the boat and 5 euros for an entrance for each person. Also you can hire a boat to get to the nice small restaurant nearby.
There are lot of wood in decor and antique furniture in hotel interiors. Very beautiful floors. You can find knights in different corners of the hotel. Rooms are spacious and bright. The level of comfort of beds is high, the quality of bed linen is excellent. Enough of electric sockets. The air conditioner worked well, but blew towards a 2-sleeping bed a little bit, we switched it off at night. Good sized bathroom with a normal bath. Towels are impeccably white and clean. The excellent travel set included both bath cosmetics, and a disposable toothbrush with a tiny tube of a toothpaste.
Cleaning of numbers was made quickly and imperceptibly for guests.
The breakfast is served on the open, twined blossoming bougainvillea terrace with a fine view of a bay with birds singing. Tasty juice and pastry. Omelet. Tasty coffee which is brought by waiters. Everything is very fresh and in enough quantity.
We spent one evening with glasses of wine on a terrace of the hotel restaurant. That was fine, burning candles create very romantic atmosphere. Prices high. Other evenings we had dinner at the nice small restaurant in Amalfi.
Also I have to note the faultless service and the benevolent attitude towards guests. Certainly, it would be great to return here again for a longer term.
Only on weekdays. The only serious claim, in my opinion, is its popularity for weddings-:) I can't speak for certain, but, apparently, during week-ends they often arrange weddings. Hotel interiors, of course, are just created for a romantic honeymoon. But noise which accompanies wedding celebrations obviously disturbs guests of the hotel. During our 4 days of rest we observed 2 weddings.
My recommendation for those who are looking for a silence and privacy - avoid to rest here during period of weddings, or just provide yourselves with ear plugs.

We weren't sure what to expect given the mixed reviews but we were delightfully surprised! This hotel is an impressive fortress in the cliffs outside of Amalfi. The grounds are amazing and the private beach and amenities were wonderful. Our standard room was large and the bathroom was huge and updated. The bedroom was simply furnished in keeping with theme but it was comfortable. Not really a room I would want to hang out in all day but when you've got a private beach in Italy why would you! No wifi in our room or within building but we were able to get the hotels free wifi when we were outside on terrace, pool, or Beach. The hotel shuttle to amalfi runs hourly in mornings and then 5-8pm which is a little limiting if you want to go into town for dinner. Which we did. Taxi is 20-25 euros. Local buses at night are unreliable at best (people would wait for hours!) Dinner at the hotel was good but expensive and a bit up tight. Free breakfast in the morning was great with an awesome sea view. Staff was cordial and helpful for the most part. Best part was relaxing at Beach then taking a complimentary boat ride to the the restaurants nearby for lunch. Amazing seafood and pasta- easily one of the best meals we had in our whole trip. Overall we are glad we stayed at the Grand Saraceno it is a great place if you want to enjoy the beach. Getting around the coast is possible it just woulf take more planning with the public transportation, tour or rent a car. We decided to get taxi service from Naples to the hotel which cost us 90 euros (a good deal we have found out) http://www.taxisorrento.altervista.org/ lucio was very lovely and even let us add on a stop in Pompeii for 60 euro more. Great trip!

My cousins and I stayed at the Saraceno in early May. Unfortunately, it was too cold to use their wonderful looking beach and pool but we enjoyed the grounds of the hotel. The rooms were large and clean, the terrace bar was nice, the shuttle service into town was good. The only minor criticism I have of the hotel is that the decor is a bit dated. The restaurant was okay but not fantastic. Breakfast was very nice.
I thought the hotel was really unique and I enjoyed staying there.

Amazing hotel. Like staying in an old fortress. Amazing location excellent staff and great value.
I can say that this is the most interesting hotel I've ever been to. There are no spa or room service (don't use them anyway) but the place and the excellent maintenance make the difference.

My husband and I and friends recently stayed at the Il Saraceno Grand Hotel on the Amalfi Coast. On a positive note, this is a spectacualr hotel, which rests on the side of a cliff and is a part of an old fort. It is located outside the town of Amalfi and there is a free shuttle to town on a regular basis. The superior room we booked had a small balcony and was decorated with dated furniture (no..not antiques) and we did have a leak in our bathroom so the floor was constantly wet. Our friends staying in the room next to us were covered in bites, so we believe there may be a bed bug issue? There is a great private beach, which is accessed by an internal elevator. The terrace area is lovely with sweeping views of the Amalfi Coast. The reception and porter service was absolutely fine. Now for the negatives, the food & beverage service was horrendous...in fact there was no service! Be prepared to ask numerous times for menus/drinks and be prepared to wait even longer for your order to arrive. Do not believe the hotel motto as the wait staff are definitely not gracious or friendly. Maybe there might be one or two exceptions to this but overall, very poor service. We ate in the restaurant and it was mediocre. To be honest, I have never written such a negative review and I was warned by locals in Positano that Il Saraceno was a terrible choice...they were absolutely correct. I would never recommend this hotel.
