“Amazing lunch and amazing experience”
Reviewed 15 June 2014 via mobile

We recently finished a tour of lake como, tuscany, and venice and cantina follie was one of our best dinning experiences! The place was was perfect for our family of 4. It was a little hard to find, but once we realized it was one street off of the Main Street, we walked right there. The kids got panini, and my wife and I got an amazing plate of cold cuts and cheese along with some wonderful wine that they recommended. We ate outside, but could have eaten in their wine cave that they had decorated with hundreds of bottles. The value for the meal was excellent and if we are ever back on lake como we will definitely return to cantina follie.

“Fantastic Italian lunch in rooftop setting”
Reviewed 14 June 2014

Brilliant lunchtime meal had by the four of us in tranquil setting on the outside terrace. Very hot day when we went but the owners have installed a mechanical sliding sunshade which gives complete protection from sun. This is good because you don't want to leave when you are savouring the delicious meats and cheeses and is a good place to chill out after your meal.
The owner Joost actually brings you an enormous plate of food and takes the time to explain exactly what he has prepared for you, e.g what the cheese is and what region it comes from.
Fantastic way to spend the afternoon.
It is situated in a tiny sidestreet approx 50m from the main road up the hill in a pedestrian area.

“A must if staying on western shore of Lake Como”
Reviewed 12 June 2014

We were staying in Menaggio, around a 10 minute drive to Tremezzo, so took the last bus and got a taxi back for around €20 euros.

We had read that Cantina Follie was difficult to find but we were lucky to see a sign at the bottom of some steps on the lake front which directed us to it perfectly. When we went inside there were a few customers already drinking but no sign of staff, we had to wander upstairs to find someone but they were very friendly and spoke great English (the owner is Dutch and speaks excellent German and Italian too).

We were glad that we had booked in advance, because it meant we had a table outside on the pretty terrace. Service was a little slow at the start, mainly owing to the fact that there were only 3 staff and a few large groups had just arrived, but we didn't mind.

We ordered a cheese platter and beef carpaccio which were both excellent. We also ordered wine flights with 5 wines each which seemed a bargain at €12 per person (the measures seemed to be around 75ml). The owner asked us what mixture of red, white and sparkling we would prefer and then recommended some wines for the flights. He even gave us both different wines so in all we were able to try 10 different wines. They all come out at the same time on a wooden board - which does fill the table with wine glasses, and means that you must drink the white wines fairly quickly or they warm up.

After we had finished our wine flights we ordered a bottle of wine to have with the remaining cheese.

The atmosphere was pleasant and relaxed, there seemed to be mostly tourists, though there was a large italian family group as well with children - so it seems that it is child friendly.

At the end of the night the owner kindly ordered us a taxi and let us know when it was coming so we could make our way down the steps.

A great evening, well worth it if you are anywhere near Tremezzo.

“Missed the mark for us a bit, but still a great find... ”
Reviewed 8 June 2014 via mobile

Maybe all the glowing reviews set our expectations a little high, but we were a somewhat underwhelmed. Atmosphere was great, meat and cheese platter was excellent, wine was good but the service fell short. Joost (I think) initially greeted us and was so nice then I guess he thought his staff took over serving us. Unfortunately they didn't. Not bad but not great.
