This perfectly family run gem of a hotel could not have been more accommodating. Nothing is too much trouble. The hotel is clean, boasts wonderful views, a quiet location and idyllic setting. Shuttle Service works very well indeed. Alternatively for those game for good exercise must ensure they enquire about the "path" up to the hotel . The two restaurants close by offer excellent food, views of the Lake and are excellent value for money -These are Rana and Pizzeria La Balognette.

The hotel itself is fine. It's a solid 3 star hotel - rooms are clean but they are small and the bathroom is very small with no privacy (the wall doesn't go to the ceiling). The location provides amazing views but it a total pain if you don't have a car. Taxis are available but expensive and you can't just stroll through town on a whim. If you have a car then this is a great value. If you don't have a hotel, spend a little more and stay in town. The staff is very nice and helpful though so that is a plus.

We stayed at Hotel La Perla for three nights in September as we were going to a friend's wedding at Villa del Balbienello. The hotel was extremely clean, well fitted and the staff were extremely helpful. Bearing in mind the location, the prices were reasonable, although it was a little disappointing not to have tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms - but perhaps expecting that is a peculiarly English thing! Our only real qualm was the fact that we were in a de luxe room on the second floor, directly under the balcony where people sit. Late into the evening and (very) early morning, the noise of chairs being dragged on the tiled floor could be heard, I suspect when chairs were being tidied. This didn't spoil our stay, and the noise was probably exacerbated by the fact that the hotel is in such a quiet location, but it was slightly disappointing. Sleep quality was affected as a result, hence the mediocre score for this.

We read all the reviews and it was better than we could dream about. The location is high up in the hills but view stunning. Transport is provided early morning & late afternoon but when we wanted to use the car we were provided with free parking information.
Family run by bilingual team who always were helpful and full of ideas. They made my birthday very special. Tremezzo is quiet with three restaurants by the lake, all good value and excellent food. Take the ferry and do the hopping on and off for the local areas and to Como town which is beautiful.
We will return.

We chose La Perla as the hotel for our second trip to lake Como. After four fantastic nights at La Perla I must say we couldn't have made a better choice! This lovely hidden gem surpassed all our expectations. Before making the decision we read a lot of reviews from Booking.com & Tripadvisor and they reflected the reality very well.

Hotel is located high above the lake in an extremely idyllic and peaceful "village". Views are just stunning! Cows are mooing and roosters crowing in the morning, no traffic noice at all.

I must recommend having your own car. I think the walking distance to the "main road" is too long and walking back the steep road is one hell of an exercise :D. Hotel has a free garage and lots of outdoor parking space. It takes only 5 minutes to drive to the main road. Hotel also offers a free shuttle service to Tremezzo. However, you'll find very nice restaurants also within a short walking distance (e.g. pizzeria Balognett).

Lack of restaurant at the hotel wasn't a problem at all. We're not the kind of persons who eat dinner at the hotel. Snack bar was very good: nice wines, drinks, coffees etc. Our favorite restaurant was ristorante El Timon, located down the "main road".

La Perla is a family run hotel and the whole staff was just a-m-a-z-i-n-g. I've never met such warm, smiling, helpful and professional staff in any hotel. Whatever you asked, they were always happy to help. Everyone spoke excellent English. Also, I heard some of them speak fluent French and German.

We had a double room on 2nd floor with a balcony. Room was spotlessly clean, roomy and nicely decorated. It had a minibar, powerful AC and a safe. Balcony was spacious and had a stunning view over the lake (man, I miss that view…). Our only complaints are hard & too flat pillows and too small tv screen :D Also, wireless internet connection is little bit pricey and sometimes very slow and unreliable. This definitely needs to be improved!

Breakfast, very good; excellent croissants & pain au chocolat, espresso/cappucino/latte, local hams and sausages, fresh fruits & juices… One thing that was missing: melon!! Views from breakfast terrace are just breathtaking.

My advice to everyone: don't ruin your holiday at lake Como by booking a room from one of the "tourist trap" hotels down the main road, packed with elderly british/american tourists!

We will definitely return to La Perla because of the staff, views and location!

I just arrived from Tremezzo, where I spent five nights at La Perla with my husband. We were very pleased with our stay. The one thing that beats all other previous hotel experiences is the service. If I could give their service mindedness six stars, I would.

The room:
We stayed in room #302, which was quite basic, but impeccably clean – as was the bathroom, which I find to be one of the most important things during hotel stays. Our standard room, for the price of 141€/night, was spacious, had a large bed, enough closet space, a desk and a minibar (with various drinks from water, juice, soda to beer and wine). Based on other reviews I had read, I asked for a ‘silent’ room, which we definitely got. There are only two rooms on the third floor (the same as where the reception and breakfast area is), and these are entered through 'in a separate wing’. Not once were we disturbed by any other hotel guests, nor could we hear anything through the walls (which you normally do in most hotels). What I had also asked for, which is special to the two rooms on the third floor, is that you’ll have the evening sun. Instead of having the sun on your balcony or terrace early in the morning, I prefer after a day of sightseeing to return to the hotel and enjoy a sip of chilled champagne, prosecco or rosé wine at your private sunny balcony, before leaving for dinner in the evening. The sun hit our balcony around 12:30, and was there until it set behind the mountains around 19:00. The other rooms, most of them facing the pool and the street, have the morning sun until about 14:00.

Breakfast:
The breakfast was sufficient with different kind of breads and croissants; marmalades, hams, cheeses and egg; yoghurt, cereal and muesli; coffee, tea and juices; as well as fruits. The breakfast area is lovely, starting your morning looking over at Tremezzo, the Como-lake, the mountains...

Driving and walking to the hotel:
We drove from Milan Malpensa airport, which is about 85km away. You’ll find only one road toll (1,90 €) when arriving in Como area. If you arrive in Tremezzo from direction of town Como, you’ll have to turn left to Via Peduzzi just after the church. It comes quite sudden in a curve, and is the road just before the red building of hotel Darsena. If you have passed Darsena, you’ve driven too far. When you drive along Via Peduzzi, there will be very clear signs for hotel La Perla.

As many reviewers write, you should preferably have a car if staying here. However, please also know that there is a free shuttle bus at the hotel, which takes you down to Tremezzo daily at 9:15 and 10:15, and picks you up at 17:00 and 18:00. We mostly used our car daytime for sightseeing around Como, but actually took the shuttle bus for going down to town some of the evenings. For coming up later to the hotel, you can take a taxi for the cost of 10-15€ (quite expensive for 1,5 km), or walk up to the hotel (about 1km).

There are three walkways up (and down), of which I can recommend Via Monte Grappa and Via Monte Crocione, about similar length and type. These take about 10-20 minutes up and down, depending on your condition – and your footware :) You might be a little ‘sweaty’ when returning back to the hotel though, if the weather is warm. The third walkway I took up one morning when I went for a stroll at dawn to the lake, which was quite heavy. It is Via Selve di Rogaro, which I would recommend only if you have good condition. The path also gets quite different from the others, walking in the woods (see pictures attached), so you definitely need suitable shoes. When you come up to Via IV Novembre, the rest is okay back to the hotel, and not so steep anymore.

Restaurants:
I recommend in particular two restaurants in Tremezzo. La Fagurida (at Via S. Martino 15) serving typical local food, with lovely views over the Como-lake (if you get a good table outside), as well as restaurant Balognett (Via delle Mele 5), which is a very basic place with plastic chairs outside, but with excellent pizzas and good service. For reaching La Fagurida you need a car (unless you’re the sporty type and don’t mind the walk up there), whilst Balognett is about a 10 minute walk down Via Monte Grappa to Via delle Mele.

An alternative if you like wine, is to one afternoon try the wine tasting at Cantina Follie (www.cantinafollie.it), or simply go there for an aperitif. We really enjoyed the wine tasting with the cheese and ham platter over there. Joost was an excellent host, letting us know a lot of new things about wine, producing it, storing it, drinking it...

To do:
When visiting lake Como, taking the car ferrys and mid lake boats (http://www.navigazionelaghi.it/eng/com/nlc_ora.html) make a lot of sense to see different villages. We visited amongst others Bellagio and Varenna, both by boat. The car ferries go from about 06:00 to 23:00 from Cadenabbia (immediate next village after Tremezzo), whilst the mid lake boats go from about 9:00 to only 19:00, leaving from Tremezzo.

Tremezzo is also very close to the Swiss border, so visiting Lugano or other nearby places, might make worthwhile. Just remember to bring your passport, in case you are spot checked at the border.

If you are in to villas, there are plenty of them to see around lake Como. Villa Carlotta is in fact in Tremezzo. We never went there though, but went instead to Villa Balbinello (also shooting place for one of the James Bond and Start Wars movies). You need to leave your car at Lido di Lenno, and from there you can walk to the villa (about 1km, easy walking) or you can take a taxi boat.

Summarising our experience, you won’t be disappointed by staying at La Perla, as the service is excellent, rooms are basic but very clean, and you have lovely views from the hotel. Recommendable is renting a car (and not a too big one, as the roads are quite narrow in this area) and bringing good footware, if you’re planning to also do some sightseeing by walking. Enjoy your stay!

We stayed only 1 night and wished we could have stayed a month. Lake Como area is surely one of the most beautiful places in Italy. The reception at the hotel, which is quite new, was the best in just over a month of stays in various hotels, apartments and B & Bs. We were shown to our rooms and everything was explained as to how it worked. Drinks on the terrace looking over the lake with the hotel being elevated up the hill making for a wonderful setting. We hired a car in Como to get there but would recommend the ferry from Como if you don't already have a car and they have a shuttle that will collect you. For dinner we were recommended to go to a little trattoria just along the road where the food was some of the best of our trip. All in all a great stay and we can't wait to return for a longer stay.
