After fighting our way through the narrow roads along the lake, jammed with buses and heavy trucks, the hotel was a sanctuary. Set back from the road among a lush garden, the small door way in the back of the hotel to the reception is like stepping through the looking glass. Inside are large rooms with high ceilings, a piano in the drawing room, and a reading room overlooking the gardens - imagine an Agatha Christie novel.
The gardens are large enough to find your own space - and with a small child were excellent, as there was plenty of space to run around in, without us having to worry. Being on the edge of the lake, it was also straight forward to go for a swim.
The hotel is also next to the ferry stop, so getting down to Tremezzo and Belagio is easy. If you want to walk in the hills around Como, you can do so directly from the hotel, although we didn't.
The room was simple, but clean, and with a lake view, it was quiet and had great views. The hotel is old though, so don't expect the Hyatt - the rooms are simple, and the fittings old fashioned, including in the bathroom. We made the mistake of having breakfast in local cafes which cost as much as having the buffet downstairs - which looked excellent.
Dinner tasted excellent, and the setting, in the garden with a view over the lake in the evening, made the experience very romantic. The staff were at all times extremely helpful, whether it was organising warm milk for our child, or providing drinks in the garden. A gem of a hotel, that transports you aware from the real world.
