“Beautiful location, but hotel restaurant lets it down”
Reviewed 3 July 2013

My friend and I went to this hotel at the beginning of May. We had pre-booked a room with a balcony overlooking the lake, we were not disappointed :) The view was breath taking :) The only negative comment is regarding the restaurant. Their was a tummy bug in the hotel when we got there, and although the hotel provided alcohol washes at the entrance to the restaurant, because the food was wholly buffet style - everyone in the hotel were using the same serving spoons, which would surely not help to keep the infection at bay. Fortunately, I had packed a small bottle of hand wash, which we used constantly during our stay, and were not affected by the infection.

Whilst staying here you MUST take the Bernina Express to St Moritz, the views are spectacular, even if the clouds descend (as they did on our trip) - well worth the money :)

We used the ferries across the lake daily to reach the other local villages of Bellagio, Verenna and Menaggio. Bellagio is a quaint village with typical steep cobbled streets, lovely to wander through on a hot day, as you can always find a shady place to walk :) Verenna is also a quaint village. You must sample the ice cream from the shop in the square in Menaggio, and travel back to the hotel on the little train :)

By now, hopefully the floating swimming pool is complete, we watched the work for the week we were there, it should look good by now :)

Room Tip: It certainly pays to ask for an upgrade to a room at the front of the hotel for the view over the la...

Just got back from a week's stay with Shearing's. The hotel is in a lovely location, just across the road from Lake Como. If you are lucky enough to get a room with a lake view, you won't be disappointed and there is a nice view from the restaurant too. It's quite a large hotel, so meal times can be a bit hectic with everyone trying to get to the buffet! The food was good, but did get a bit samey by the end of the week. Rooms were clean, the staff were friendly and the all inclusive drinks were of a good standard. The hotel itself is lovely in all it's faded glory, with nice public sitting areas and a pleasant sun terrace. Yes there were a lot of older people there, as it is well known as a coach tour destination - most people were probably twice my age - but I don't see why some people find that to be a problem. Everyone was enjoying themselves and it's much better than having lots of kids running around, or chavs getting drunk and being offensive. I love this sort of holiday, as you get to meet some interesting people with different stories to tell. The main problem for me was the 'entertainment' - a guy playing the organ every night! Not my cup of tea, but there were bars close by if you wanted a change of scenery. There was a pool with bar about 100m down the road that was owned by the hotel (the floating pool still isn't finished!), with sun loungers and AI drinks until 5, and there is a free boat over to Bellagio which is gorgeous. All in all a great, value for money holiday that I wouldn't think twice about going on again. Beautiful scenery, nice walks, clean hotel with good food and friendly staff - what more could you want.

fantastic location, food excellent,we did a coach tour so we went on a couple of trips, mennagio just a couple of miles away is a pretty little place, the only disappointing thing was the entertainment which was very poor, just one guy on a keyboard playing the same songs for 4 nights,i know this is cheap but they must be making a few bob judging by the amount of people staying there, put on a half decent band on a couple of nights ,i am glad i took my harmonica ,we made our own fun, nice little irish bar about 200 yards down the road serves a nice pint of guiness.

We recently stayed at this hotel and can honestly say it leaves a lot to be desired! As you enter the hotel there is a disgusting stench from the fish tank that needs a clean the room needed a good scrub, the view in fairness was awesome! Beds were not changed all week! We found thousands of ants crawling around the room, the dining room was very reminiscent of a school canteen with very unimaginative menus ! Meat and potatoes every day! The bar located in the basement was depressing with very limited choices, the lido is so small and open to the public so not much chance of a sunbed unless your early! If your over the age of 70 with low standards you could love it, but we felt like we were trapped in a nursing home!

I am glad I was not put off by some of the reviews I seen for this hotel, yes some aspects of the hotel certainly need improving but it also has some good points.
We paid an extra 10 euros per night to get a larger room with a superb lake view which was well worth the money, the dining room was clean with very efficient and pleasant staff and there was always a reasonable choice of food that I would describe as ok rather than good.
The bar was on a lower level and a bit grim so we avoided that but above was a nice terrace area to sit with a drink which overlooked the lake. The worst feature is the busy main road which runs in front of it and is very noisy at times but overall the good points outweigh the bad points of this hotel.

Room Tip: Consider paying to be upgraded if you don't you may still get a nice view but many of the rooms...

The hotel was nice, our room was very nice,we did pay extra for a lake view which I think was worth the extra.
The only fault we thought were the breakfasts, the food was not hot enough

overall it was a good standard for a three star hotel and the location could not be better

Room Tip: It is worth paying for a lake view room, a balcony is only useful if you do not want to mix with oth...

I recently returned from a stay here and was sorely disappointed. I struggled with what rating to give the hotel, but I cannot justify giving it three stars. There is nothing wrong with the hotel per se. The location is absolutely fantastic and our 5th floor room had a lovely view of the lake. The rooms were as advertised and are actually quite nice (except for the decrepit bathrooms). I had read reviews that said it was frequented by British bus tour groups, but didn't exactly comprehend what that meant...The place was overrun with 7 buses full of elderly British tourists. We were in our late 20's and I didn't see anyone younger than 50 the whole time I was there. The "breakfast" was one of the worst meals I have ever seen. I just ate toast for 3 straight days.

However, the true disappointment was that the beach club (i.e. floating pool) which was supposed to be open by April was not open. BEWARE - IF YOU EXPECT A FLOATING POOL, IT'S NOT OPEN. The other pool is open, but it is a mediocre pool at best, certainly not the kind of high end floating pool that I was told would be open. I felt bait and switched.
