“Grand time at the Grand Hotel”
Reviewed 5 April 2014

Stayed 6 nights in March on an all inclusive basis. Prebooked a room with balcony and lake view which was fantastic. The room was set back from the road so traffic wasn't a problem and the views across the lake to Bellagio were stunning. The room had three beds, a fridge and plenty of space and the bathroom had a jacuzzi bath with air and water jets and lighting…
There was plenty of food and drink available, with lots of choice. It wasn't inspiring and a bit monotonous but perfectly adequate. Service was good.
This hotel is a good base for excursions round the lake, and to Milan, St Moritz, Como, Bergamo etc.

Room Tip: You pay more to prebook a balcony room with lake view, rather than pay 40 euros at the hotel, but pr...

Well, what can I say, first time with Shearings, overnight stay on coach just bearable but well worth it for the hotel and it's magnificnt views over Lake Como. We had upgraded upon arriving at the hotel for a front room view with a balcony, well worth the 40 euro's. All the staff were excellent apart from the cleaner's could do with giving the bedroom floors a sweep throughout the week and a change in bath towels woudn't go amiss, but apart from that, nothing else to complain about. Food and drinks were readily available. You wouldn't die of starvation. It was nice to see the pizza's cooking in the oven and the pasta being made and a buffet bar to suit all palates, home from home cooking. Decor of the hotel was exceptional. We will most definitely go back to this hotel, well worth every penny paid.

Room Tip: Ask for a front bedroom with view of lake 30 euros, with balcony an extra 10 euro, worth every penny

Good in parts, in other words. We stayed 4 nights in this hotel on a recent all-inclusive holiday with Leger. It's a strange hotel, in some ways. Rather grand and ornate in the lobby, dining room and public areas, but the rooms and upstairs corridors have seen better days. Our room was huge with a small balcony overlooking the lake, but the lighting wasn't adequate, we had traffic noise outside and you could hear the people upstairs and in the next room quite clearly. If you're looking to plug in anything electrical, forget it. Only the light sockets are available. The decor is old fashioned and we had odd mismatched curtains! The bathroom, however, was clean and modern.
None of this mattered too much as we were only there a few days and spent most of the time on day trips. As a base for exploring the region it was fine. But Cadenabbia itself is very small and there's one cafe (very nice) within easy walk of the hotel, one very small bar and a pizza restaurant in the hotel next door. So you don't have a lot of choice of where to drink and eat, hence the all-inclusive regime I assume.
As other reviewers have mentioned, the food isn't great - we ate out at lunchtime where we could to avoid the free for all in the hotel. The hotel was very full with lots of other coach companies so there was often a struggle to find a table, a lot of jostling during self service and not enough seating in either the lounge or the basement bar. Its probably better during the summer months when the lakeside bar is open and it light and warm enough to enjoy a stroll or a boat trip to another town. Waking up to that view over Bellagio, however, is almost compensation in itself. Stunning.

Room Tip: Rooms on the top follow probably have better view, but rooms at the back are likely yo be quieter...

Travelled to this hotel with Leger Holidays from North London. Stayed overnight in Reims on the way out and back. Rather basic accommodation in the Ibis Hotel, but not too much to complain about given the cost of this holiday. Coach was comfortable and the drivers/guides really good. All the travel went to plan. Hotel is very good. Friendly staff who do their very best to see that everyone gets a good service. Our room overlooked the Lake and was huge and comfortable. Lovely creaky floor and elderly furniture added to the illusion of once-upon-a-time gracious living. Food was a bit of a disappointment. The grill offered plain but good quality meat and fish but the vegetables were cold unless you got into the dining hall at 6.30 on the dot. Desserts were ok if you like chocolate. A local cheese would have been great as an option. Local drinks are included in the price and they were plentiful and the wine was good. Breakfast is very very ordinary unless you arrive after 8 when the hot food arrives. Our excursions were always away before this, so we had limited choices. Overall though I would recommend this holiday and this hotel.

Room Tip: :Pay the small amount extra for a room overlooking the Lake.

Stayed 6 nights All Inclusive in March 2014. The weather was excellent - so made all the difference. 27C the first day and very warm all week. Only rained as we were leaving for return home! I pointed out water leak from roof in the lobby area - hope they have fixed it! For the price we paid - we enjoyed a really good holiday. Stunning location! Our standard room had a few minor snag issues which we reported. It was a bit on the small side but adequate. Noisy (kitchen)? extractor fan started up 6.15am through the day - outside below window of room 450 - also lift ding dong noise! Rear view of mountains up towards Griante. The sun terrace provided an excellent view across the lake to Bellagio. Food okay for 3 star hotel. Staff in bar and restaurant very friendly - good service. We mostly did our own thing - during our stay - boat across to Bellagio and local walks to Tremmezo, Villa Carlotta + Botanical Gardens, Menagio & quaint Griante - but the highlight has to be the Bernina Express from Tirano to St Moritz in Switzerland. Stunning views and a photographer's dream - even from a moving train! You can put the windows down. I used the window near the ski rack - so not in anyone else's way! This excursion is a must!!
Shearings driver Steve drove very safely and was full of useful information along the way. The hotel in Nancy (France) on first night was not very good. Breakfast was a scramble to find anything much to eat - hotel staff not interested! What a contrast to the hotel on return journey - Mecure room, dinner and breakfast very good. Our first trip with Shearings. It was a long haul to Como - but worth it!

Room Tip: I understand that the front bedrooms at Britannia are larger - thus the upgrade charge if you wish t...

A truly remarkable week, travelled 8-16 March. The weather for the time of year could not have been better, never a cloud in the sky all week. We went with Shearings with overnight good hotel stays in France there and back (Nancy and Reims). We had already upgraded to a room with balcony and lake view when booking, but I believe people who upgraded on arrival had a better deal though. The outlook is truly stunning looking over to Bellagio and the snowy Alps beyond. The room was lovely, very nicely furnished and comfortable, with TV. Hotel staff worked very hard, particularly in the dining room as it was always very busy. Food was good, and there was plenty of choice. It wasn't 5 star food, but it's only a 3 star hotel, so don't expect gourmet food. But we were never disappointed. The wine was OK for an All Inclusive hotel and bought to our dining room table. Drinks in the bar were generous to say the least, but agree with previous reviewers that there is no atmosphere, but good to meet up with fellow travellers for a chat. We mostly took our drinks upstairs to the quiet lounge, or up to our room and enjoyed the balcony view. At breakfast the fruit juice was a disappointment - it was just like flavoured water. But a very nice hotel in a fantastic location - we were not disappointed, and we will certainly do the same journey again. Our coach driver David was fantastic. We had three included excursions and three which we paid for, the highlight of which was our excellent 2 hour plus train journey up to St Moritz and the very deep snow on the Bernina Express. Overall, extremely good value for money.

Room Tip: Ask for Lake view with balcony.

Had a great time. We went with Shearings on the overnight stop coach for 9 days. Paid for an upgrade on booking in, great room overlooking the lake, well worth the extra 40 euros. Staff were very good in particular the bar staff who all worked very hard and were very pleasant. Everything went well and will go with Shearings again.
