“promises but does not deliver”
Reviewed 9 June 2014

Stayed as a Shearings customer for 1 week. I have read many of the previous reviews and would comment as follows

Plus points on hotel
Situation good for boat, road train and bus.
Free shuttle boat to Belagio (except for grumpy driver)
2 exceptional members of staff - Scottish lady at reception and Emily who worked mainly alone in the very busy downstairs bar. She was totally overworked with very little help but always smiling and pleasant
air conditioning and ceiling fan in room, these were needed as if window was open the road outside made it very noisy
English TV channels in bedrooms mentioned by many as a bonus
Plenty of hot water in the bathroom and shower, also clean towels on request
We were given a large room with a view without paying extra.

Minus points
Never saw any fresh vegetables during the whole week - all frozen and overcooked,
carrots, broccoli, sprouts, tinned peas, courgettes, peppers etc
Meat served sliced in huge serving dishes covered in gravy.
Breakfast scrambled egg was tough, saw a fresh batch being delivered but that too was over-cooked. Bread rolls were hard practically inedible.
Dessert consisted of minute pieces of indeterminate cake and tinned fruit - pineapple, fruit cocktail, pears. Only fresh fruit available was oranges (dried up) and apples (scabby).
One day asked chef what the meat displayed was and he had to go and ask someone!!
Trays were often empty and people waiting round serving area of refills.
Cleanliness in rooms (mine had fluff under the bed for 4 days), corridors were not cleaned properly, glasses left in lounges from the previous evening (this was 1145).
Wardrobes in room 327 the hanging rail was placed so high from the floor that it was not accessible unless we stood on the bed (I am 5'3") surely a health and safety issue. Then the majority of hangers were the wire ones from dry cleaners
Entertainment was promised on most evenings - only 1 night on the Lido with live music (which was good), however if cancelled due to the weather, they did not come into the indoor bar.
Indoor bar was a man on an organ not the most inspiring.
The hotel was short staffed - staff almost running in the dining room to clear tables, rooms many of which were not cleaned until late afternoon.
Gala dinner advertised and promised, but did not happen (or did it and we did not recognise it as such)
Dining room was so big and busy it felt like a canteen, certainly not a relaxing atmosphere and it was noisy. People walking round with plates full of food not being able to find a table.
Noisy busy road outside the hotel, care had to be taken.
Too many times when you were charged extra, bathing hat, towels for pool, extra key card etc.
General points
An older generation of guests, no detriment there but something to be aware of.
Selection of drinks available all day, coffee machines available dispensing various varieties of coffee and hot chocolate.
We had a good holiday but the food let it down, so much choice - too much? Better to have less choice and more fresh vegetables and better quality of fruit, ditch the tinned fruit so WW2.
Downstairs bar needs a radical upgrade, an L-shape which separated off at least half of the guests.

Sorry review is so long, but there are so many points which need addressing, I sent all this information on the comments form, but never sure how much notice is taken of them.

Room Tip: Check out the room given before opting for an upgrade.

This hotel needs at least 2 of its 3 stars removed, and the Grand in its name, should also be removed.
The good bits first, a very good floating pool on the lake, now that is great. The room we had did have a good view of the lake, bed ok. Now the rest, pillows poor quality, drinks in our all inclusive package were watered down, especially the wine and spirits, the food was a disgrace, and anyone who says otherwise clearly has little taste for food, so poor we eat out, even though we paid all inclusive. The male pool/ bar attendant had no charm whatsoever, in fact we was quite rude, so much so I had to speak to management on his attitude, although the following day he had reverted to grumpy again.
Would we recommend this hotel NO !
Having said all that, the area of Cadenabbia is very nice, so don't be put off by this one hotel .

I took the advice from other travelers and booked the lake view - definitely worth it! The room itself was pleasant enough but a bit dated. The location is excellent - just over the road to the ferry stop where you can go all over Lake Como quite easily. I highly recommend a short walk down the road to the Villa Carlotta, which has stunning gardens.

The hotel itself is as you would expect for an "all inclusive" hotel - lots of tour groups and "grey nomads". Breakfast is included but not particularly pleasant.

One thing that annoyed me was the parking - the hotel advertised free parking but there were about 20 spaces for a hotel of 200 or so guests, so naturally it was always full. I parked in a side street where there were plenty of other cars and no street signs - so naturally got a ticket the next morning.

Room Tip: Definitely a deluxe lake view. Don't bother with anything else.

We have just returned from a week's stay at the Grand Britannia Hotel and we had a great time there. It is a very good hotel and you get a lot for its 3 star rating. Staff were pleasant and helpful. Food was buffet style, it was cooked on view of guests, varied, hot and plentiful. Our room was ample for our needs, basic and clean. You can upgrade if requested, but we really did not find the need to do this and it was situated on the side of the hotel, nice and quiet at night.
This year the hotel has a brand new Lido and floating pool and decking area. There was live music a couple of times during the week and this was good fun. There is also a bar in the basement providing live music on some nights. There was a great lively bunch of people during our stay which added to the atmosphere. The hotel provides a free ferry service to Bellagio Opposite, which is a must for a visit. We went on 3 coach trips while we were there, and these were well organised and brilliant experiences. The hotel provided packed lunches, and we were back for tea on each occasion. This was our first trip to Italian Lakes and the experience at this hotel will certainly persuade us to return.

View from front facing room was stunning. Area is great for tours, best was Bernina Express and lake cruising between towns, although Bellagio was better from bedroom window than being there. Hotel was very busy, over 500, and it shows. Breakfasts were poor, coffee Luke warm, dreadful fruit (unless you liked tinned prunes or fruit cocktail) bread hard and dry. Lunch and dinner were better. Waiters were excellent especially if you were young, pretty and female. Unfortunately the average age seemed about 70. We met many of these and really enjoyed their company, but they did keep going on about how wonderful the hotel was, how brilliant the food was and what fantastic value for money their package had been. We went on the Jewel of the Lake Grand Tourer with Shearings so can only assume that we paid way over the odds for our holiday. The floating Lido looks fantastic from the bedroom, but the sun beds were hopeless and the pool was so cold I thought I was getting hypothermia after swimming for 5 minutes.
Lake Como is somewhere we would love to go back to, but not with Shearings and to a better hotel. However, this is a 3 Star Hotel and there were lots of very happy customers.

Room Tip: Do get a lake view room, does not have to be a balcony

The hotel location and our room was fabulous. The hotel and our room had a wonderful view of Lake Como and Bellagio across the lake. We loved our balcony. The hotel is well situated for all activities in the area-walk to Villa Carlotta and ferries. There is parking, but few spaces. The hotel has a musty odor and does not seem really clean. The breakfast was plentiful, but mediocre. This hotel does a huge business in bus tours with arrivals and departures happening all day long. The hotel owner has a restaurant across the street on the Lake with great views and excellent food and service. All said, for the price, it is a good place to stay due to the location and views.

Spent a week at this family run hotel on the Shores of Lake Como. This was a very big hotel but so efficiently run you wouldn't know it. A three star hotel with a five star service. I never once sat in reception without being impressed with the manageress and her staff. Always courteous and helpful no matter how infuriating the guests were. It would seem that this was no act but good old fashioned service from genuinely nice people. I can't speak highly of this. We had all inclusive deal which gave us breakfast, four course lunch and four course dinner with wine, juices tea and coffee as part of the deal. We never had a bad meal. Every meal was delicious. The hotel had its own ferry boat which took us across to Bellagio, free of charge. On the lake in front of the hotel was a pontoon with over 200 sun beds, a pool and bar. You could eat there if you like but we kept to the hotel for meals.
Hotel organised day trips which were excellent and reasonably priced.

Room Tip: For a few pounds more you can upgrade to a balcony. Ask for room on sixth floor at front for a great...
