“*** in Europe”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

Having read mixed reviews about this hotel we came anyway, on a Shearings Coach Break. The price for the whole trip was attractive so I could not expect the best rooms in the place. As it was we had a rear/side room on the 3rd floor with a balcony from which you could see the lake and Bellagio across the water. It was clean and tidy and available by 1:45pm on the day of our arrival. The shower was tiny and leaked a bit, but the beds were comfortable, there was a flat screen TV with 8 English channels, room safe, air con and ceiling fan (which we didn't use as it frightened the life out of me). The room itself was small by USA standards but was an Italian 3 star room and pretended to be nothing else. 5 Euros bought you an extra key card which was worth the convenience. We found the reception staff polite and eager to please helping with all our questions and requirements, which was often for the packed lunch. The restaurant staff were again friendly and attentive and the all inclusive option provided plenty of choice. Freshly cooked fish, pasta and Pizza complemented the normal choices. Some of the ice creams were delicious. Alcohol was served with the meals via waiter service. From 10 to midnight the downstairs bar served drinks of all varieties. The range was good and the service friendly. Occasionally a queue would form but the hard working girls would soon work through it. Drinks (no spirits) were also served poolside from 10 to 6pm at both the excellent pools. This was a hotel where many of the clientele seemed to have beefs with all and sundry. Yes there could be some changes made to the way passports are checked and rooms allocated when a coach pulls in but if you went with the flow the staff tried to make your experience a good one. We enjoyed our stay at the Grand Excelsior.

Room Tip: Single occupancy rooms were tiny

I loved this hotel, the decor is fascinating, take your time to admire it. You can’t wish for a better location, stunning views of the lake at the front and mountains to the rear. My room was at the rear of the hotel on the second floor. It was clean and a good size (a relief as I was worried being a lone traveller that I would be in a tiny room) you cannot fault the food which was varied and plentiful. I found the staff friendly and helpful. My only criticism would be the lack of evening entertainment. The only entertainment consisted of an organist playing in a rather dingy depressing bar area. Which was a real shame. Luckily I met up with some wonderful people and evenings were spent chatting and drinking on the roof top terrace. If I hadn't I may have had a problem as the free wi-fi was available in the reception area only, not in the rooms which seemed odd. I stayed all inclusive which was great. The floating pool was amazing and sun beds were plentiful. This is a hotel and the surrounding area seems to be aimed at adults and there would be very little for children or teenagers to do. For a relaxing holiday and a base to explore or just admire this beautiful lake and the nearby towns it’s ideal.

Room Tip: Wifi was free but only in available in the reception area. If it is needed you may wish to try a ro...

My husband and i stayed here for a week on all inclusive - great location, our room which was clean and quiet, was on the 4th floor just above the little shop in the side street. We had a Juliet balcony and had wonderful views of the lake, over the rooftops to the north and across to Bellagio. The breakfast was average, we were never there for lunch and the dinner was good with plenty of choices, the ice-cream was wonderful!!
The pool and Lido both have bars and food is available there too, the bar in the basement is depressing but there are places to sit at the front of the reception area and a lovely first floor terrace which overlooks the lake..
The staff everywhere were cheerful, courteous and more than helpful, a special mention to Emily, the lovely young English lady who could do the work of five bar staff and still keep smiling!!
Excursions to St. Moritz and the Bernina express well worth it, also Lakes Orta and Maggiore (with it's island Isola Bella) a must.
If you follow the road behind the hotel to Griante you will find a lovely bar where the locals drink.

Room Tip: The views around the lake are stunning, try to get a lake view room on a high floor.

just back from hotel and a lovely place. The positives are the pool across the road with great sunbeds and pool itself clean and views of mountains priceless. Hotel food was great, stayed all inclusive and choice at lunch and dinner great. Buffet style and pasta, fish, meat and ice cream. waiters efficient.Downstairs bar omly downside as dated but there is a terrace to drink. Room small and had balcony on level 3, not a problem as spent time outside. Bed comfy and good views. fantastic value.

Room Tip: left hand side nice

From reading the reviews on tripadvisor we knew exactly what we were getting and we were most happy as it was better than expected! We had a quiet, rear bedroom on the top floor. the room had been refurbished and was clean and tidy. the service was very good with a great choice of food all well cooked and presented. of course we could moan and be picky but we just enjoyed the most of our stay. there are some nice places to visit but the area around the hotel is basic although there are some well sign posted 5-9 mile walks to be had

Room Tip: make the most of a cheap deal/ all inclussive without the yobs!

Stunning location - well worth a visit - excursion to Bernina Pass and St Moritz a must - our room in the hotel had a lake view and a balcony on the 1st floor - small but comfortable and clean with fantastic views over the lake - the double bed was actually 2 singles pushed together though and the road below is very busy and noisy but service was good, room cleaned every day and towels etc changed every time we left them in the base of the shower as requested, TV had English channels and air con worked well - we went on an all inclusive basis and thought the food and wine was very good with something for everyone - staff worked very hard but were always polite and friendly - the restaurant did get very busy, but we never had trouble finding a seat and never saw them run out of anything. The floating pool was very relaxing when you had the weather for it - but we did get a lot of rain and there were few places to sit in the hotel when it rained - the bar was appalling - an underground hole, similar to the worst sort of working man's club imaginable- with only one member of staff and a huge queue! We just didn't use it and were so grateful we had a lovely balcony to sit out on on an evening. It must be remembered that this is only a 3 star hotel and is fairly cheap for the area it is in - it is a perfectly acceptable, cheap place to stay to see one of the most beautiful parts of Italy - 5 star it is not - but then again I couldn't have afforded to go if it had been and we had a great holiday and loved the area.

Room Tip: Go for the lake view and balcony - worth every penny and made all the difference
