“A room with a view,but that's all!”
Reviewed 29 August 2014

Looks great in the brochure but we were very disappointed with the room. We were placed in room 15 &16 which is an annexe to the main hotel. Avoid this if you can.We did complain but they made no effort to offer us another room. When it rained we had to walk through a puddle of water in the hallway. On the positive side the food was good but does get repetitive after seven days.
We would not stay here again. It could be good if they spent some money on the hotel, but I'm afraid it's about profit and not the wellbeing of the guests.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else! If you stay make sure your in a lakeside room - it will cost more!

Travelled with Shearings. We booked and payed to be uprated to a large room with sea view and balcony, the first night we ended up in the annex. I obviously complained and initially told that they would 'try' and move us if available, I stated that if they couldn't give us what I had paid for then I'd expect a full refund. Was eventually moved the following afternoon.
All inclusive: Food - excellent although sometimes you felt you had to fight for it.
The bar, what a laugh, stuck in the cellar, plain ordinary and lifeless. Sometimes having to queue for half an hour for a small beer (no large beers allowed!) or cola, one person serving, the rest (sometimes up to three, watching or washing/collecting glasses. One part of the bar was never opened, just the one side with one pump for each beer, sometimes the queues were all around the bar area, 30 - 40 people. Swimming pools - completely packed out on saturday and sunday with non residents, could not get in! Nothing around in the local area, a bar or two further up the road, nice if you just want to stare across the lake all evening. Okay for a cheap and nasty hol, but very disappointing and lets Shearings down very badly. We shall certainly think twice about using their 'budget' holidays again and certainly not to this hotel.

Room Tip: Make sure you uprate to an outside room (and check they've given you one) or you'll be stuck...

Previous reviewers (Nicholassue) and Anne F echo our own experience exactly; particularly with regards to restaurant, hotel environment and absence of management. We managed to salvage an enjoyable holiday despite a very poor hotel experience. Original room was unacceptable so offered better room with lake view but charged us 70 euros for this in a neglected and unpleasant annex. This is a beautiful part of Italy but avoid do this hotel.
Come on Thomson's, you can do better than this!

I have copied Anne F's comments because most of it is exactly our experience.
Everything about the hotel was so disappointing. My sister and I had been looking forward to this break, on arrival which was late at night, 11.30ish there was nobody on reception, the driver of our transfer bus ran around the hotel to find someone to check us in.
This hotel is far too big and there are not nearly enough staff to cope.
The food can only be described as 'Canteen style' with wine (if you are lucky enough to get service).
The glasses and chargers are chipped and unsuitable.
The Reception area is far too small for the long queues.
There is only WiFi in the lobby area so people sit there trying to get internet access.
The bar underground is like a working man's club and soleless. The two members of staff tried really hard but there weren't enough glasses for everyone.
Our room was on the 6th floor with a balcony and lake view, but if you sat on the chairs your view was just a brick wall.
There was no obvious Management anywhere, just staff trying their best to cope.
Think twice before booking this hotel, the Lake is so beautiful this hotel does not do it justice.

Room Tip: Check out the other hotels if you are travelling to this area.

My husband & I stayed here from 20th-25th July 2014, whilst the hotel was very grand looking in the foyer & dining room, with the food lovely & a large selection on a self service have as much as you wanted bases, our room unfortunately is a different story. We paid £180 Upgrade with a great balcony & view across lake como. The bathroom was tiny, we struggled to use the toilet & shower ( a large person would not have been able to get in there ), there was no space around the bottom of the bed we were often knocking
shins, feet, & privates squeezing between bed & wall table unit. It looked like a single room forced into a double room because the bed was pushed
against the wall recess it meant the pillows ( which were manky wth no
pillow cases one two of them ) the socket for the lamp was just above the
pillows on that one side, with the lead trailing across the pillow. As I am
asthmatic I have to sleep slightly propped up, my head was then on the
socked, not very comfortable. The sockets should have been either side of
the bed & would have been if this was a single bed. The manager was never
there to speak to & reception told us it was pot luck which size room people
got regardless of upgrade payment. Not really a satisfactory way of distributing rooms. Its made us more wary of what upgrades to pay for, & we would not stay in this hotel again.

Room Tip: If you want space in the room you could opt for a suite of rooms and cross your fingers.

Some parts of this hotel are lovely and classic 'grand hotel' Victorian style in a spectacular location. However, if you are looking for a refined peaceful hotel with classic customer service, this is not the place for you. If you've paid a lot and expect high quality service, you will be disappointed so read no more and look elsewhere.

If you got a good deal, and just want to relax in reasonable accommodation with a lovely pool and sunbathing areas in a stunning location next to the lake, and don't expect much in terms of room servicing, you will probably have a good time, as we did. Unfortunately, there are not enough housekeeping staff and this is where corners are cut.

NB: Definitely shop around before you book this hotel - different tour companies offer huge variation in prices for very similar all inclusive packages at this hotel.

Our 4th floor superior room with 2 sets of double doors onto a lakeview balcony was just what we wanted - straight out of 'Room with a View'. Sadly the ambiance was spoiled by the music from the pool opposite which seemed to drift straight into our room if doors were open - although it wasn't a problem on higher floors which actually had bigger balconies but smaller rooms. Beware - if you are looking for a romantic holiday, take some duck tape to tie the beds together - even booking a superior double room doesn't guarantee a double bed but two singles moved together, and which separate all too easily, breaking the romance of the moment!

The corridors are unfortunately grim - but it looks as though this is being worked on starting from the top floor down as that was a lot nicer and the room we saw on 6th floor was very nice, modern, fresh but still with a bit of style.

Yes, the food was buffet style, not table service, but there was lots of food choices and we enjoyed every meal - and look up! - the restaurant is actually a fantastic ballroom. We recommend the Lido restaurant across the road - the carbonara and profiteroles to die for.

The hotel management is totally geared towards large coach parties and is perhaps 'a bit too big and a bit too British and a bit too like a Benedorm hotel to give a 'Grand Hotel' experience, but if you manage your expectations having read this review (in which I have tried to be fair and balanced) you can let go of the niggles when you get there and focus on the excellent location (both in terms of view, nice walks and easy public transport connections to neighbouring villages) you can still have a good holiday, as we did.

Room Tip: If you don't like road noise but still want balcony view, upgrade and ask for 6th floor.

My wife and I spent a week here on an all inclusive basis. Our room was on the 6th floor with a lake view. It was kept very clean all week and was beautifully furnished in a classical style. Our bathroom was new and complete with a bidet. The food was very good although at times the buffet was very busy. The restaurant staff were very polite and efficient and we have nothing but praise for the way we were treated and we enjoyed every meal. The hotel was decorated in classical style and was very impressive. We also used the two lakeside restaurants that were part of the Hotel, pre-booking was required. The bar entertainment was not our scene but overall it is on our "would revisit" list should we go to Como again. The hotel is on a main road and has a good bus service, ferry service and "toot toot" road train that goes along the lakeside so there are plenty of opportunities to see the area. We did not experience any traffic noise.

Room Tip: A 6th floor lake view room proved to be an advantage as early morning and evening views are well wor...
