“Lovely Stay!”
Reviewed 10 August 2014

I was apprehensive about booking this hotel, in view of some of the bad reviews, but happily, my fears were unfounded… Firstly, the hotel is clearly a slightly 'faded' grandiose premises, but it still oozes elegance and style. The lobby is fitted with sofas and settees which exude hints of its luxurious origins. We booked a sea-view room with a balcony and were extremely pleased with the room - it was large, the bed was huge (King size) and the view was amazing. Furthermore, the bathroom was huge and had large french-door windows that opened to more magnificent views… The room was serviced daily and all the staff at the hotel were so incredibly helpful and kind - more so than at any other hotel. Staff at reception were also very knowledgeable about local sightseeing, transport and venues and this was invaluable when planning days out. The 4th floor sky-terrace bar was wonderful - beautiful views and good drinks. The restaurant, which we used only for the buffet breakfast, was beautiful too; it consisted of an outdoor terraced restaurant, as well as an indoor bit. Despite what some reviewers have said, the buffet breakfast was excellent - there was always good fresh fruit available, as well as the usual scrambled or hard boiled eggs, sausages, bacon, breads, cheeses, cereals, yoghurts, etc., etc… Although there is no one available to cook up fresh eggs for everyone, the scrambled eggs were the tastiest that I have tried in the 4 years that I have visited Italy. We never ate dinner at the hotel, as they only offer a £35 buffet dinner, which we considered to be ridiculously overpriced and dismissed immediately.

So, all in all, the hotel was good, but there are a few things that they could do to improve matters. Firstly, the bedspreads looked like they had been used at the hotel for decades… an investment in some fresher bedding would be prudent. The wi-fi in our room did not work. The fact that we would have had to refresh the wi-fi with a new code every four hours was no big issue for us - we just wished that we could have had a connection from our room. The hotel could do with offering some more entertainment. During our stay there was a karaoke night in the bar, but no one participated and we landed up feeling sorry for the chap who was trying to run this event. One night there was an entertainer in the restaurant for dinner, but we did not attend as we did not want to pay £35 each for dinner in order to partake of this.
The next issue about staying in this hotel is the lack of amenities around the area. There are a few shops and restaurants almost adjacent to the hotel, but they are not, in my opinion, of any great value. Instead, we did the daily walk to Tremezzo every night to eat in several good restaurants on offer there. The walk to Tremezzo is about 10 minutes - beautiful views make the walk a pleasure, so not too much of an inconvenience.
Now, the real issue at hand about our stay at the Grand Hotel Cadenabbia does not concern our hotel or the amenities surrounding it, but whether or not Lake Como lives up to all of the hype it receives. Having travelled to Lake Garda, Lake Maggiore, Lake Orta, Lake Zurich and now, Lake Como, I can honestly say that I prefer Lakes Maggiore and Garda to Lake Como. Yes, the views and landscapes are beautiful in Lake Como, but the views and landscapes and towns are even more beautiful, in my opinion, at Limone in Lake Garda and in Stresa in Lake Maggiore. Yes, Bellagio in Lake Como is beautiful, but Isola Bella and Isola Madre in Lake Maggiore are better!

So, overall, the Grand Hotel Cadennabia was great - excellent staff, glorious views, great breakfast…but the question is - do you really want to visit Lake Come, rather than the other Italian Lakes?

Room Tip: Second Floor sea view with balcony was amazing!

The good things are position, layout, 5th floor dining room and 4th floor bar and terrace looking over lake Como. There is a well maintained pool in a large garden . The dining room staff are fine but the dining room is poorly run, get in early if you want a choice unless you likeTiramasu every night. The bar prices are good wine with your meal slightly expensive. We were out in the day on a Riviera coach tour best way to see the area.

My husband and I booked to stay for 7 nights HB in the Grand Hotel Cadenabbia. After reading the reviews we were a bit hesitant. So we paid the extra for a lake view with Balcony. On arrival at midnight a cold buffet was waiting for us. The next morning the view from the balcony was breathtaking. The food was good; location was fantastic and rooms clean and comfy. The staff were also attentive to our needs. There are good walks along the lake following the Greenaway sign. Only downside was there wasn’t entertainment at the Hotel. Overall a good choice for what we needed. I would recommend the trip to St Moritz.

Room Tip: Higher floors have less noise from the road. Make sure the A/C is working.

Stayed for 10 days and overall was a little disappointed. The room was adequate if basic and very dark with just two small french doors for light and no balcony. There was a shower which we prefer and plenty of hot water and the towels were changed daily although there did not appear any sign of a vacuum cleaner during our stay. The problems with the internet have been well reported but the swimming pool was the biggest joke.To reach it you had to travel up to the 4th floor then trek down a steep path to the pool ,the area was not well maintained and there were no facilities apart from a few tired sunbeds. A call of nature meant a trek back up to the 4th floor !The dining room at the top of the hotel gives wonderful views of the lake but the fare did not live up to this.breakfast was adequate but the absence of freshly cooked eggs disappointing.Evening meal was a let down make the most of the cold table and sweets (if there are any left)because the main course was very poor.No complaints about the staff in fact in the restaurant they were literally running around to satisfy demands. Summing up we enjoyed the holiday and the area but would not rush back to this hotel.

This hotel is by no means a 4*. The decor is tired, the rooms gloomy and dark and the food VERY boring. The breakfast is extremely poor - nothing is replaced quickly, I have never seen scrambled egg that colour and the fruit etc. is put out each morning despite being past its best. Evening meals were very poorly presented and all the soups tasted the same. Not 4 start quality at all and surprised Thomson Lakes and Mountains use this hotel - not their usual standard. The location is not the best as there is no life around, meaning you have to use the ferries and go out. Their idea of entertainment was a man with a computer and a speaker - karaoke - just one night and no one joined in. Our garden room overlooked a lawn with some sun beds. The 4 hourly internet codes were freely available and I had no trouble even in our room. Como is 35 minutes by car/coach and 2 hours by slow ferry. The ferry charges do not get cheaper if you buy a return. Good for the 'noddy train' to Menaggio and Lenno - stops right outside, C10 and C12 bus stops are outside too, and the shop with the bus tickets is next door, so handy. Villa Carlotta is next door and a short walk to Tremezzo, a much better equipped village. Restaurant views are superb - if you manage to get there at the right time to get a window view - we never managed to! The bar manager was extremely rude to one of his staff in front of us one night, reducing her almost to tears, which was very embarrassing for her and ourselves.

Room Tip: Rooms on floor A have working air con as they have been upgraded recently - it does not work in many...

Wonderful views from lakeside room with a large balcony...the highlight of the stay. The room however was shabby. Bathroom had no bath only shower. Internet connection was a bit of a problem, having to renew your code every 4 hours was a minor irritation. Food was acceptable but rushed. Also the hors d'oeuvres need to be labelled....very difficult to know what was on each platter if you are vegetarian. Cadenabbia is a very quiet resort but the hotel is very close to 2 ferry ports which allow you to hop over to other resorts easily. The pool would not be easy to access for the elderly or little children and on a wet day the decking around the bar and pool area is very dangerously slippery. I would question the star rating of the hotel and would not recommend for younger people

Room Tip: Select lake view with balcony

This hotel benefits from a beautiful building and lake view. However, the rooms are poorly decorated and quite small. The worst part is the VERY SLOW internet connection and the fact that there is no internet in the rooms which is not acceptable. One also had to renew the connection every 4 hours which is tiring and very old fashioned. The food is good and so is the service. But the hotel is badly situated with nothing to do especially once it rains. I do not recommend this hotel to young people.
