We stayed in room 1, which offered a beautiful balcony. The room is small, so if you have large suitcases, you will be in trouble. The shower leaked water on to the floor very badly, but it was nice to have a walk in shower. The staff was always very helpful. They offer free private parking, but you need to drive up to the hotel in front and then they will go park it. The breakfast is great. I had dessert at the hotel one night (a chocolate lava like cake) and it was very good but pricey compared to other local restaurants. Good Wi-Fi in the rooms. Location is fantastic. It was fairly expensive to stay here, but it was the weekend of the sagre.

We just got back from six days at Il Giglio and we had a wonderful time. The owners, their son, and his girlfriend (who works there) are all wonderful people. We had drinks at the bar two evenings, we shopped at Anna’s cute little store next door, and we had dinner in the restaurant – the food was superb, thanks to Anna’s amazing cooking. The breakfast is probably the best I’ve had in Europe – fresh homemade bread every day, fresh homemade cakes and jams, wonderful cheese (and meat, but I don’t eat meat so I cannot vouch for it but I’m sure it was good). They also had homemade brunello wine cookies and two different kinds of homemade biscotti, which we had with our drinks at the bar. For a nominal fee, Mario dropped us off one morning at a winery in Sant’Angelo in Colle and we spent the day in the area, then he picked us up at another winery. Il Giglio has very friendly owners and our experience was most certainly worth a five star rating.

We especially enjoyed the walk/hike from Montalcino to the Sant'Antimo Abbey. We took a bus from Castelnuovo dell’Abate back to Montalcino. We even got an impromptu tour of an olive oil mill in Castelnuovo! I will say, though, that the trail is not well marked so I recommend that you get good directions before attempting the hike (some other people along the way had a small book with trail directions in it – I’m not sure where they got it or what language it was in). The trail starts about a quarter or third of a mile past the cemetery. There are fabulous views along this hike!

The photos included in this review are of Mario and Anna, the owners, the hotel lobby/bar, and the view from our room.

Note: We stayed in Room 7 (see the October 24 review below) and we too thought it was the fan that was noisy. However, we discovered that it was actually the toilet tank, which is above the toilet and directly below the fan. My husband fixed the rattling in the tank so that the noise was much more tolerable, and we mentioned it to the owners as we were leaving in hopes that they could do more for future customers.

Stayed two nights in late October and had a good stay here. Beautiful view from our first floor room at the back of the hotel and an easy walk into the piazza. Breakfast included lots of cakes that were disappointing relative to other hotel stays and could have been better by simply offering a selection of breads. Cafe was exceptional as was the hot chocolate! The owners are very helpful and know a great deal about the local wine scene. We'd definitely return here on our next visit. It was a great base for exploring the region. One piece of advice...arrive during the day. It is hard to find the hotel by car at night.

I spent 6 nites at this hotel - great room with lovely view and nice location. The town is fairly small, so location really isn't an issue at all. The owners, Anna and Mario and their son, Michele were helpful and welcoming. Okay, now let's get to the food: aside from their amazing restaurant (for which Anne is chef extraordinaire), breakfast (which is included) needs its own special review. Anna makes fresh ALL the cakes, jams, yogurt and a few other sundries. I can't even tell you how delicious the brunello grape cake was, plus she serves a carrot cake and a chocolate cake. Folks, these are not your super sweet American cakes, but are totally appropriate for the am, esp with a great latte. (There is also bread, salamis, cheese, etc). Il Giglio is definitely a place I will stay again when exploring the incredible brunello wines of the area.

Room Tip: I DO have to say that in Europe, do not assume the hotel OR the rooms are non-smoking. I believe the...

I stayed in this hotel for my holiday. It was so lovely and welled managed hotel, located in the center of the city close to Piazza del Popolo and the Fortress of Montalcino. I was stunned with the lovely lobby and the view out side the lobby's window. The staffs were helpful esp. Mr.Mario and his wife. The single room was small but comfy with nice bathroom and the amenities. The breakfast was great as well as the dinner at the Hotel's restaurant. I had such a nice stay in the famous wine produced city. I will be back to stay here again.

Room Tip: Double room has a stunning Tuscany view, highly recommended.

What a beautiful town! This was our favourite place in Tuscany, unfortunately we could only stay one night.
Pros: comfortable rooms, nice enough breakfast, lovely owners.
Cons: no view from our room (number 4- unless you stuck your head out the window!) Maybe we were given this room because we were only staying one night? Advertised as all double rooms with a view, so this was a little disappointing. Absolutely indifferent service by the staff, in stark contrast to the owner, who was delightful (we didn't meet him until the next morning) This was such a shame- we weren't sure if it was because we are younger than their usual clientele. Expensive for what it offers, but i wouldn't have thought so if the service had been better.

Room Tip: Ask about the view, avoid room 4!

I really enjoyed staying here. Decorated in the most traditional way. It was great. We had spectacular views across the countryside from our room. The breakfast was delicious - again overlooking gorgeous vineyards and with homemade delights. Also parking is included with the room. They were so helpful and with everything. Would highly recommend. We stayed in Room 7 and there was a noisy extractor fan in the bathroom. This is the only reason that i didn't give 5 stars.
