“A Highlight of Central Tuscany”
Reviewed 31 August 2014

What constitutes excellence? Others could take lessons from this warm inviting country chic atmosphere. You are greeted warmly, the menu is presented and discussed and the owner and staff engage you as long lost friends even if this is your first visit. The tasting menus were excellent and even if you have food concerns (gluten) they adapt to any need. The wine pairings with the meals were excellent and the "old cellar" was a delight. Worth going back to? absolutely and we did, passing over a 2Star to return to this 1Star. Worth a drive from Siena for the evening.

“To die for”
Reviewed 3 August 2014

Found it 15 years ago in the Gambero Rosso and go back there year after year. It is not that easy any more for me to find things on the menu as I turned vegetarian 7 years ago, plus I stopped drinking any alcohol back then, but I can still say that their wine cellar is one of the best I have seen so far. Both wine and food might be a bit pricey, but worth every Cent. Or Euro. This year the owner has hired a new chef who kept the very high quality level plus he renovated the offerings, making the dishes more modern whilst keeping a nice balance between tuscan and international cuisine. Try simply dishes like the pea soup (well, there isn't anything simply there, so be aware of - pleasant - surprises, even a pea soup gets pimped up here!) or the deconstructed cheesecake with celery (!). Really, no kidding, for me this restaurant is one of the reasons to go to Tuscany every year.

“Deserves the Michelin star”
Reviewed 23 July 2014

Wonderful meal chez Il Colombaio. We got the 80 eur menu that, from the beginning to the end, was very good, namely the "fiori di zucchini", the fresh pasta with lobster, the cold and hot foie gras, the pigeon and the dessert.
Although the restaurant is very well situated, it has no view and the decoration is not "high standard" at all. The service is correct but not exceptional ( we only saw one young gentleman serving the two tables outside and one inside ).
The wine list is extensive and seems well made ( and not very expensive with good wines in the 50-70 eur scale ). The lady that serves the wines ( perhaps the owner and eventually the one who made the list) was not an example of the friendliness and simpaty we usually see in the Italian people and specially in the restaurants. Fortunely it was compensated by the charme of the Chefs that went to the table in the end of the meal to know if everything was fine.
A meal for two, costing 250 eur deserved a better service, but the food was so good we can forget that and hope they will improve this detail...

“The Best!”
Reviewed 4 July 2014

Enjoyed a fabulous meal last night. From the moment we arrived we were treated with impeccable service; warm and gracious and charming. The food and wine were out of this world. In all of our travels in Italy this meal stands above all others. Very sophisticated menu. On the expensive side, but worth it. A fantastic find, and we look forward to sharing this experience with friends and family when we next return.

“Good meal”
Reviewed 8 June 2014

We tried the tasting menu. The food was very different, interesting and good. The service was good. Pity the place was empty as made the atmosphere a bit dull... Off the beaten track but worth a visit if around and want a meal different from most in Tuscany
