There are places you stay in because you simply need a place to stay.

There are luxury hotels you stay in because you want to avail of the facilities and unwind.

Kilcannon House isn't a luxury hotel but it is the perfect location to chill and regroup. Don't think of it as another B&B, think of it as probably the best B&B you'll ever stay in.

They have a great team, Gertie, Pat, Mac (the dog), Zag (the cat), Jeff (the horse) and all those hens - and they all seem to want to ensure you have a perfect break at Kilcannon House.

We stayed one night and none of us wanted to leave the next morning. We relaxed in a big sitting room, reading the Sunday papers with Mac at our feet as we slowly "recovered" from what was the best breakfast I've ever had in a B&B.

You have to try Gertie's porridge!

Kilcannon House is only 15 minutes outside Dungarvan, one of my favourite towns in Ireland, on the way to Lismore, another fantastic town.

If you want to explore West Waterford it is a wonderfult base.

This duo know how to do hospitality. The professionalism, enthusiasm and charm that Getie and her husband Pat have in their business is infectious.

We were fortunate enough to stumble upon their wonderful B&B and stay for a weekend in November. We arrived strangers and left great friends full of most wonderful home cooked food. Gertie's breakfast is a three-course affair, full of fruit, homemade conserves, freshly baked scones and bread, wonderful boozy porridge and a selection of cooked breakfasts. Pat is full of charm and complements the duo with stories and lots of rich local history.

They have a very cute self-catering stable cottage that looks very tempting for another time. We stayed in one of their very spacious double rooms. Extremely comfortable beds, lovely sleeps and the day gets kicked off with an hour long 3-course breakfast. They were very accommodating about us bringing our dog with us. He's house-trained and clean and they had no issues at all letting him stay with us, which made the whole stay much more enjoyable. He made friends with lovely little Mac along the way.

If you're lucky you might get a few tips from Gertie in baking. She's a pro.

Their business and the way they run it should act as a sounding board for all others who run or may wish to run a similar business. We recommend them, and their venture wholeheartedly.

Sometimes we get nervous about B&B/homestay/farmstay experiences. It's awkward when you feel like you have to entertain your hosts or you're scared to bother them. Gertie and Pat couldn't have been more perfect. They were there for anything we needed, but didn't make us feel crowded. We were made to feel perfectly at home without getting in their hair. Every interaction with Gertie or Pat was so wonderful that we wound up wanting to hang out with them our whole stay! We left after two nights with two loaves of bread we'd made ourselves (with Gertie's help), three homemade maps drawn out by Pat (an expert if there ever was one) and the hopes of returning again soon.

P.S. the breakfast was a 3 course masterpiece.

We stayed with Pat and Gertie for 5 days and used the farm as the base for exploring the surrounding countryside. With Pat's advice and mud-maps, we never got lost. The food was wonderful, the room was comfortable, the surrounds were beautiful and the care and attention were superb. We wished we could have stayed longer.

Room Tip: Choose the room which overlooks the front garden.

This is a lovely little B & B. Gertie and Pat are absolutely wonderful hosts. They were very helpful with suggestions on activities and sites to see in the area. The food was amazing, and I cannot say enough about the wonderful property. We had a lovely bedroom in the main house with a great view of the courtyard.
One of the highlights was definitely the animals. Jeff the horse is a gorgeous and gentle animal and Mac the dog is very entertaining.
Definitely worth the stay, I hope to go back soon.

If you are looking for somwehere to escape the madness of the modern world, somewhere to recharge, get back in touch with nature and be wonderfully nurtutred and cared for... this is the place. Bring some books, walking shoes and a crate of wine and your're set for a week.

Pat and Gertie are the best hosts you could ever want - kindly, helpful and just good folks. Very welcoming. You feel like part of the family, not visitors.

The house is actually an old farm - and still has a few speckly hens, a cat a dog and an old horse called Geoff wandering about. They are all real characters!

The farm house is part of a group of buildings - mainly stables, huddled around a stone farmyard in the traditional way. Apart from the swallows chirping, the sound of silence was deafening. True peace of a kind rarely found in the western world.

The house is full of character, and the rooms spacious and comfortable. Beds are large and well sprung. There is a cottage on the edge of the farmyard if you want more privacy than a room and you can still have your breakfasts cooked for you.

Its an out of town place, but evening meals are whatever you want and of fine quality. If you want a drink the hosts don't mind you bringing your own wine or beer. There are walks nearby, a beautiful flood lit garden for an after dinner stroll, and also a fishing lake.

I've stayed in many an Irish B and B, but this is the best of them all. Not the cheapest, but for pure rural bliss, its worth it.

Room Tip: All rooms and cottage are good. There is no sign on the main road - so best call for directions!

My husband and I enjoyed two nights at Kilcannon House at the beginning and at the end of our motorbike tour of southern Ireland. The owners, Gertie and Pat, plus Mac the dog and Jeff the horse made our stay one of the best experiences we have had visiting Ireland. We arrived quite late but Gertie was on hand with a gorgeous 3 course dinner for us after a long days travelling. The meal she cooked was fabulous using very high quality ingredients - it was a delight! We got up late the next morning (breakfast is cooked to order whenever you like) and was an absolute feast and just what was needed to fuel us up for our ride to Killarney. It was a lovely relaxing way start our Irish holiday and we only wished we could spend the whole holiday there. We definitely will be returning to Kilcannon House, and would like to stay in the little self-catering cottage on the farm so we can bring our dog and explore the wonderful Cork countryside. (The motorbike will have to stay at home!)
