“A homely B&B in a lovely setting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 September 2010

We have just had a wonderful relaxing 4 day (long week end) stay at Polrode Mill Cottage. We booked the St Kew Room which had a very comfortable brass bed, nice views over the colourful garden and a large detached bathroom.

The thing that made our stay here so good was the fact that the cottage only has three double rooms which made for a very friendly atmosphere with fellow guests and the owners, David and Deborah. A mention must also go to Chandler the cat, whose welcoming purr always required a reciprocating tickle.

The meals were delicious, leisurely breakfasts and evening meals in a homely environment, all from local produce where possible. We ate evening meal at the cottage throughout our stay. The dinner menu had a minimum of three choices and David (the chef) would always adapt the menu should you have any special dietary requests.

The gardens and grounds provide a lovely relaxing setting, with the various breeds of chickens and pet rabbit giving a "Darling Buds of May" feel (in the nicest way) to our stay.

We most definitely will return!

Stayed just one night as we were going to Rick Stein's Seafood Restaurant in Padstow. Had a few problems finding it but once there it was worthwhile. Wonderful old house with spacious rooms and a bathroom with a bath. Excellent breakfast and if staying agin would definitely have dinner as the menu looked very inviting. Thoroughly recommend.

My wife and I loved our stay at Polrode Mill Cottage. Beautiful cottage with a charming country feel to it! The rooms were beautiful and the bed comfortable.

The owner David was nice and accommodating the entire stay. Three course dinner was delicious and most of the meat and vegetables were grown on the property, and the rest from local farms.

And as other reviewers have mentioned, Chandler the cat was a friendly presence as well! Curling up on our laps while we enjoyed wine in the evenings and generally being a welcoming co-host.

Highly recommend this B&B of you are going down to Cornwall!

We stayed for a perfect extended weekend break Friday and Saturday night, and were lucky enough to have individual attention from the owners, as there were no other guests. We were warmly welcomed, and looked after really well throughout.
There were huge flagstones on the floor, with inlaid millstones. The cottage had that story-book ancient character from the upsy-downsy slightly sloping upstairs floors. The ceilings were heavily beamed, and both mornings were light and bright, even with variable weather.
There were antique ornaments tastefully placed throughout, and the owner was well versed in local customs, house features and local industrial buildings from the past.
The cat was truly friendly, appreciating some new company.
We had a wonderful 3-course dinner each night, and ate like kings! If you ever stop B&B, David - open a restaurant! The home made preserves were excellent and fresh-tasting.
The room was clean, fresh and bright, and the brass bed the most comfortable we have stayed in anywhere.
The location was in easy reach of the Eden Project, Port Isaac and Port Gaverne harbours, and Tintagel Castle.
The best bit for us was the wood-burning stove which we watched through the evening with a glass of something nice, which was way better than any television!
Well done to David and Debs for providing such an idyllic break away from it all!

A very pleasant cottage with interior décor fitting for the period look, didn't have opportunity to try evening meals here but breakfast was excellent. Rooms are smallish but it is a cottage after all. Main gripe came with regards to our bill when checking out a day early, initially told there would be no problem leaving earlier than booked, which was great. However, when owner discovered payment was made on a company credit card, he changed tune and wanted to charge full amount for the missed night. Perfectly within rights to do so, but done with such poor grace it left a particular sour taste after such a sweet stay.

David Edwards, the owner of Polrode Mill, can certainly cook. Dinner at Polrode Mill was excellent. If you're on holiday in North Cornwall and you can book for dinner without staying at the house, don't hesitate.

It's a pity though that not everything came up to the same high standard as the cooking. We booked for an August stay at Polrode Mill last January, impressed by the website and photos of the rooms. The room my husband and I shared was small but OK although the "quiet rural setting" was rather spoilt by the din of traffic rushing past on the main road just outside our window. There is no indication on the Polrode Mill website that it is situated by a busy main trunk road (unless you count "just off" the A 39), in fact the pubilicity goes out of its way to spin this particular truth.

However, our main problem was that we did not get the accommodation we imagined we had booked. Much is made on the website and in other publicity about the ensuite bedrooms with "remote controlled television, hairdryer and tea and coffee making facilities are available in all bedrooms. Each bedroom has its own luxuriously appointed bathroom, featuring a roll top bath and/or separate shower" We booked two rooms; one for us and one for our 18 yr old son. When we booked we were told that we were booking two rooms with a shared bathroom. When we arrived my son (over six feet tall) was shown into a room with childrens bunk beds and a bedside lamp. No wardrobe, no storage, certainly no TV, no hairdryer, no tea or coffee making facilities.

Sadly, David's customer service skills didn't match his cooking. When we complained, we were told very brusquely that they were full and that "nothing can be done" . When we paid at the end of our four night stay we had hoped that maybe there would be some gesture towards our disappoinment. An apology, maybe a reduction on our bill. But no. We had to pay exactly the same for my son as we did for ourselves. And when we queried it? You've guessed..."nothing to be done". We paid up. We didn't want to spoil our holiday with a row, or to embarrass our son.

But if you do decide to go to Polrode Mill Cottage, make sure you know exactly what you're booking in advance and don't believe all the spin on the website. Personally, though, I'd look elsewhere.
