“A natural base for the walking beer lover”
Reviewed 2 September 2012

I have run several walking short break holidays based at this hotel. It's a professionally run place with very good accommodation, decent food and a good range of real ales in the bar. it overlooks Matlock Bath, sitting above the promenade which can get busy at times. As such it's an excellent base from which to explore this great walking region, and which offers value for money and friendly service. I can warmly recommend.

Just come back from a 2 day break at the Temple Hotel, what a great place and location, the hotel is at the top of temple walk that over looks matlock bath, very warm welcome from girl at reception.
This hotel has a lot of history some which is displayed in a glass cabinet on the 1st floor, the room was great lovely en-suite and had shampoo, conditioner body wash and cream .. Very nice and not just the little ones that you normally get in hotels, tea, coffee and biscuits and if you run out just ask and they will refill for you, tv but could only get a few channels but not bothered as didn't really put the T V on.
The breakfast was 10/10, lovely with lots to choose from service was great.
There is a bar also that opens every evening till 11.
The history and the views from this hotel are great if we ever go to Matlock again would stay here it was fab, came away very refreshed. Thank you.

This hotel is an excellent choice for all, we are a couple that love hard and difficult Mountain bike rides that require a lot of different skills and qualities. The routes available in this area are endless and are of an excellent standard. The hotel is unbelievably helpful, friendly and accommodating, they dry your kit for you after a hard ride, there is storage for your bikes, a hearty breakfast sets you up for hours of riding. If you like physical activity the stay here, runners and mountain bikers alike. Get your trail blazing backsides up there, you will love it!!!!!! A fantastic friendly hotel, well done and thank ou for a great stay. :-)

Room Tip: Good valley view in room 2, very quiet and relaxing. Fantastic value for maontain bikers with brill...

We only ate here, we did stay over.

I felt a bit misled when I arrived as I felt the website made the restaurant look nicer than it was. It was really like a pub bar which wasn't what I was looking for for a Birthday meal after a visit to nearby Chatsworth House.

When we arrived it had just started to rain and the temperature had dropped quite a bit and the "bar" was freezing. We mentioned it to the landlord and he said he hadn't noticed as he'd been hot all day. A couple who were obviously staying there also complained that their room was cold and he then said he would put the heating on. he then did shut the windows and doors which were all open.

The menu looked good and was short which is always a good sign but when the food came it was totally uninspiring and tasteless. My father had garlic mushroom to start and they were either out of tin or boiled with a slimy texture! The soup however was nice and tasty and clearly home made.
We all had steak (again with the same kind of mushrooms and a tasteless tomato) and although cooked well they had no taste.
The service was good but for the price I paid I expected nicer food. It was really standard pub fare.
And the toilets, although clean really need updating!

This review is as misleading as the first line - you did NOT stay over. I am saddened that you were "disappointed" as you gave no indication of this state during my many visits to your table on the evening. Indeed everything seemed fine right up to your departure, and my questions as to whether everything was alright did not produce any negative comments. Therefore it is somewhat cowardly to anonimously broadcast to the world that there were allegedly shortcomings with your meal that you did not discus with the management before departure. For the benefit of our world wide readership I would like to put the record straight. We have no separate evening dining facility at the moment. All our evening meals are served in the Chatsworth Bar Lounge 'Bistro Style' and is stated as such on our website. It is NOT misleading, readers please feel free to browse our website under the 'Chatsworth Bar' tab, (and whilst you are there check the website reviews to see what people who actually stay with us think of us!).
As for the 'bar', it was not "feezing" (it's August for goodness sake) there were no open windows in the bar to shut, I don't know where you got that idea from, and the only door was from the foyer, which I didn't shut. Misleading.
The food you were served was all freshly cooked from all fresh ingredients. The garlic mushrooms are fresh mushrooms pan fried in butter and set aside whilst a cream sauce is made. You may be more familiar with the breaded product, served with garlic mayonnaise. It is an insult to imply we use mushrooms from a tin and the only time we boil mushrooms is when we make (fresh) mushroom soup.
Our beef is ALWAYS sourced locally and in your case I can guarrantee it was reared within 10 miles of the hotel, and bought from a local master butcher as is all our meat. It is no surprise some of the flavour may have been lost as you asked for one of your steaks to be "cremated", (your description on the night) and another very well done. It is very easy to shoot at someone from a distance, may I advise you to discus any shortcomings you may have before you leave an establishment as this will normally result in satisfaction for both parties without having to launch into the internet. You can be anonimous, we cannot.

We stayed at The Temple last weekend and couldn't find fault with anything at all. In fact I am wondering if "Fiona M" the previous reviewer actually stayed at the Temple at all, she sounds as though she was staying somewhere completely different.
Our bedroom, 12, was lovely with a double aspect giving us wonderful views. Reading the info provided it seems that there is an ongoing refurb, but the quality of the bed linen, carpet and curtains was first class, so if it continues to improve like that it will be superlative. Sadly we were not around for an evening meal, but the breakfasts were delicious, yet again with high quality ingredients, lots home made or local.
Evenings in the bar are friendly and relaxed with great choices of beers and spirits. All the staff were welcoming, chatty and helpful and available whenever we neededthem.
I will recommend the Talbot to people and would love toreturn there myself one day. Thank you for a brilliant weekend.

Room Tip: Try and book room 12 for the views.

We stayed at the Temple Hotel for 2 nights but were a little disappointed. We were pleasantly greeted on our arrival and shown to our room. The room was dated and with no view at all (room 15) and had a musky smell to it, this could have been due to the room being directly above the kitchen, im not sure. This idea of the trip was to explore Matlock Bath so we tried not to let the dated hotel room bother us too much as we were only staying 2 nights during the week. The hotel is situated off the main room so it was nice and quiet and just a few minutes walk to the centre of Matlock Bath. The breakfast in the morning was very good, there was a good selection to choose from and the service again was very pleasant. There were 6 tables set for breakfast including ours so i was a bit confused as to why we were put in a room with no view. During the early afternoon we returned to the hotel to book a table for that evenings pie night, we rang the reception bell several times but no one came to assist us, eventually we left and returned a few hours later when someone did come to assist but unfortunately we were told the pie selection we wanted was sold out and we would therefore have to have an alternative. We did attend the pie evening because many other restaurants in the area stopped serving food at 5pm during the week. The bar and restaurant was packed with locals attending pie night and we did hear another 2 hotel guests being told the pie had been completely sold out (as far as we know they just stayed for a drink) so from our experience we would recommend you book if you want to eat in the hotel. Unfortunately we checked out before breakfast the next day as i was extremely ill during the night and wanted to return home as quickly as possible. Again we rang the reception bell several times so that we could check out at 8.30am but no one came to reception, eventually we left. We wouldnt usually give a bad review but felt we had to give our personal views of our stay, we hope if you do stay at this hotel (there are plenty of good reviews) that you have a pleasant stay.
