“Very nice boutique hotel”
Reviewed 4 March 2014

This hotel is a very nice is set within a fantastic old building directly between Matlock and Matlock Bath - about a 15min walk either way - and the renovation and attention to detail is excellent. Everything I would expect from a boutique hotel, including the best bathroom ever!

We visited Matlock Bath on a sunny Saturday and found that its a small front of shops that thinks its at the seaside! The shops are all either Fish+Chips, Tea Rooms, Pubs or Arcades, plus the actual bath which is now an aquarium.

Back at the hotel...

The hotel manager was great and couldn't be more helpful, although the other staff seemed a little under-trained and more lackadaisical.

I have read a few mixed reviews on another site, so in order to address those items (at least for room 10):
- the room was spacious
- the windows opened fine
- the plug sockets were all accessible
- the beds were comfy
- room lighting was bright enough to read (or apply make-up)
- the was a free-standing mirror on the bedside table (and a hairdryer in the drawer)
- the bar was open whenever we wanted it
In other words, I could not find faults where others had!

I would recommend this to others and would happily stay again.

I had 2 nights here when working in Derbyshire for a few days and must say I enjoyed it immensely.

Apparently now under new management, i immediately felt at home and very welcome. The hotel has a beautiful Tor view and ample parking, set above and away from the main road.
The decor is contemporary and stylish and I was given a free upgrade to a double room on the first floor. This was spacious, spotlessly clean and well equipped.

The bar area and restaurant were lovely....contemporary and comfortable with friendly staff. Sadly no real ale on hand pump, but there were a few good bottled beers from the Chatsworth Estate Brewery..... Very nice indeed.

I at at the hotel both nights and this area caused my only niggles. My request for a "blue" steak... Ie very rare.....fell on deaf ears and my rib eye arrived medium cooked..... That said, it was a deliciously seasoned and tender piece of meat, which I polished off with gusto.

The second night, my home made steak burger suffered from similar over cooking and would have been improved, if cooked for half the time.

The breakfast though was very nice, with both eggs benedict and eggs florentine making a nice alternative to the full English option.

So to sum up. The hotel would have received a 5 star review, had the menu, had more than a handful of choices, had the bar had a craft beer on hand pump and had the chef been a little over zealous when cooking.

May I add, that the above niggles are more than negated by the standard of accommodation, friendliness of the staff and the approachability of the the manager.

Would I return? Most certainly, I will

Room Tip: I believe that rooms on the second floor may have signal problems with the complimentary wifi....che...

Just returned from a weekend in this lovely hotel. We stayed in room 14 and were very pleasantly surprised to find it was actually a deluxe suite with an unusual circular bed and a double bath. The facilities, comfort and cleanliness far exceeded our expectations infact we felt quite overwhelmed.
The management and staff were most welcoming and accommodating. Nothing was too much trouble, we felt that staff did everything possible to make our stay memorable.
We decided to have dinner in the restaurant and enjoyed an excellent meal which was well cooked and beautifully presented. The Tia Maria chocolate cream was particularly delicious as was the cheesecake. Breakfast was equally good with plenty of choice to suit all our party which included 2 vegetarians and service was attentive yet discreet.
The hotel is set in a beautiful location between Matlock and Matlock bath and we enjoyed a pleasant walk into Matlock bath after breakfast.
This hotel is perfect for a relaxing break and we will definitely return in the future.

We booked to stay on Friday and Saturday nights via Laterooms in a standard double. Having read the reviews we were expecting a tiny room, which didn't bother us because we weren't planning on spending a huge amount of time at the hotel. However, we got room #3 and it was more than adequate. Despite previous criticisms, we found it, and the ensuite very comfortable, although the mattress was a touch too firm for us. Overall the service we received was excellent and very welcoming, especially on Friday evening and Saturday morning when we were possibly the only guests in the hotel. Breaskfast was superb as were the evening meals. We did get some disturbance on the Saturday night when some drunken guests decided to gather around the sofas on the landing outside the room. Despite finding their silly jabberings entertaining for a while we were hoping a night porter might have been on hand to ask them to keep the noise down. However, it was one of those things, and certainly didn't put us off the hotel. If, indeed when, we return we might ask for a room away from the main staircase!

We booked for one night in family room 15th February - lovely hotel and great room. We ate in the hotel for our evening meal and it was lovely and reasonably priced, the breakfast next morning was great so all in all a great hotel as only 5 mins from centre for the kids

We recently visited the High Tor as a family and were really impressed with the quality of the rooms. It's ideally situated just walking distance from the attractions that keep the kids happy and is a welcome retreat after a busy day out in the Peak District. We would highly recommend it.

Stayed here just before Christmas
Really friendly staff very clean excellent stay. I can not find a fault with the hotel.
Spent Friday night in the bar and staff could not do enough for us.
Breakfast was very nice and a choice of cooked food.
It's about a 10 minute walk into matlock bath so quite central with plenty if parking
