“The Last Resort - But What a Find!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 August 2012

Firstly - Congratulations to TripAdvisor for finally admitting that The Midland exists. On our previous attempt to write this review (last year), they insisted that the most popular drinkery complete with riverside setting did not exist as they couldn't find it on Google.

Anyway - we stayed at The Midland over a year ago now, but it was by no means a first choice. We had tried three other of our regular haunts, but were finding the problem was that it was the final night of Matlock Bath Illuminations. We phoned The Midland on a whim and were told that yes, they had one room left - the last room available in Matlock Bath. We booked it straight away as we were going to a concert at The Fishpond, which meant that we could now integrate this with a weekend away.

The bedroom was 'no frills', but everything we needed was there, and a rarity - a real bathroom - was a very welcome surprise. Being set out as it was, it felt more like your own flat than a room in a B&B, which again, was very welcome.

The breakfast was 'buffet style', but what really set this apart was that breakfast was served in the conservatory, meaning lovely river views as The Midland is unique in being the only establishment in Matlock Bath to be located on the side of the road beside the Derwent.

The best surprise was yet to come - we were deliberating on where to have Sunday dinner and The Midland was packed to the rafters, so we had a quick scout around before deciding to go back after an hour or so. The Sunday dinner at The Midland was without a doubt the best we'd had. I can't go into specifics here, as it's over a year since we went, but I do remember the chef explaining how he got the gravy to taste like ale gravy without the use of ale!

The Midland will not be to everyone's taste, as it is basic and you get left alone, rather than being fussed over, and it is regularly reserved for any contractors that happen to be working in Matlock Bath. If you do happen to feel like having a few days by the river in your own self contained flat though, there's no better place.
