“Five stars for a 5* experience”
Reviewed 14 October 2013 for a stay in October 2013

What a wonderful weekend! The venue is top notch for large groups and I can honestly say that it is pretty much perfect! ( Only one quibble - bath sheets would finish it off instead of bath towels, for complete luxury!) Every single thought has been put into making the weekend grrrrrreat - down to TWO dishwashers, kettles, toasters to ensure everything goes smoothly in the catering dept. The bedrooms are beautifully decorated and are most comfortable, and all the bathrooms have excellent large walk in showers. The ground floor room would be excellent for anyone disabled as it has a wet room attached and the bathroom on the first floor is heavenly with a stunning slipper bath and HUGE shower!! There is also a bar with a BAR BILLIARDS table!!! I Haven't played for years but we had great fun! I had a wonderful stay with my extended family and everyone from Herbie (20 months) upwards, thoroughly enjoyed everything about it. Thanks to Juliet and Martin Who went to such an effort to make our stay memorable - it certainly exceeded all expectations!

“A Fantastic Venue for your special celebrations”
Reviewed 30 September 2013 for a stay in September 2013

The house is just fab and Juliet and Martin provide everything you could imagine to make it a wonderful stay. There were 23 of us and we all said how lovely it was - all women, you know how fussy we can be. It's well placed for the restaurants and bars in Matlock Bath - just a 5 minute walk. The place is roomy with 12 bedrooms, sleeping 24. It has the longest sofa in Derby shire (seats 10) and the dining room seats 24. The litchen is well equipped and the utility room has two dishwashers. There are 11 bathrooms and a toilet. Parking for about ten cars plus on street parking for many more. The gardens are lonely with lots of seating for the whole group to gather and drink bubbly as a toast. We loved it. and the beds were dead comfy too.

“A beautiful, luxurious and very well equipped bolthole”
Reviewed 16 September 2013 for a stay in September 2013

We rented the house for my 40th birthday and had an absolutely amazing time. Both evenings we cooked in the house for 20 guests and without exception, the kitchen had everything we needed and more. The rooms are beautifully well furnished and the addition of an en suite for almost all of the 12 bedrooms makes for a very luxurious place to stay. To say those beds are comfortable is a total understatement! The communal areas are brilliant - particularly the bar area, which provided the centre piece for our knees up on both nights. We simply didn't want to leave - amazing house and I will look for any reason to stay there again!

“Portland House delivered on all accounts, perfect location for exploring Derbyshire.”
Reviewed 4 August 2013 for a stay in July 2013

I chose Portland House for the location and for the luxury it afforded, it delivered everything and more to me and all my guests to celebrate my 60th Birthday. I would reccomend it to anyone, and even slight hiccups were sorted by a quick phone call to the owners, who were more than happy to help.

“Perfect House, Perfect location, Perfect stay...5* All the way...”

Words really can't describe what a wonderful stay we had at Portland House c1870. Please don't think twice about booking, you really will have the most luxurious, memorable weekend.

I booked Portland House for my sisters Hen Do, and from the moment of booking Juliet was a complete star. Nothing was too much trouble, she accommodated all of needs, helped with booking activities, provided lots of useful hints and tips for the area, all with a big smile and friendly approach. It is cleat that her and her husband have put a lot of thought not only into making Portland House a beautiful 5* place to stay, but also into the service they provide for their guests.

It is a beautiful, welcoming house, in a fantastic location. We were not short of things to do...We had a cocktail class in the Bar, afternoon tea in the dining room, and too many drinks and karaoke in the lounge. Comfy beds to roll into at the end of the night, and a lovely refreshing shower to wake us up in the morning. We felt truly spoilt.

The area has just as much to offer. It is a fantastic base for exploring the local area, which is beautiful. But, if you just want to stay in the town as we did, the pubs are great, the fish & chips to die for and the atmosphere, bikers included, was brilliant. The possibilities are endless...I can guarantee you will not be disappointed. The only disappointment, is that you have to leave at the end.

Recommendations:

Gourmet Express - Provided Dinner for us the first night. Lasagne and garlic Bread. Delivered to the house all ready for us to heat up and enjoy. Delicious food at a very good price.

Bespoke Bartender - The cocktail class in the Bar was brilliant fun. Plenty of alcohol, and laughs. Richard was a brilliant sport and it was a fantastic evening.

Darby & Joan - Vintage Tea Party. Delicious food, beautifully presented all in the comfort of the House.

The FishPond Pub - The Fishpond staff were fantastic. They have an amazing function room at the pub, the ballroom, which we used for a photo shoot. Great or parties of large groups. Food an the music in the evening was fantastic.

Heights of Abraham - Brilliant fun, even for a bunch of 30 somethings. We organised a scavenger hunt round Matlock Bath which included the cable cars and Heights of Abraham... again, the team who work there are great fun and very helpful.

Joe Neville Clay Pigeon Shooting - Another fantastic morning out. Very professional, fun instructors, with lots of tips and interesting stories. Clay Pigeon shooting was great fun, all the girls loved it.

Tuckers Fish & Chip shop - One word...Delicious

“Perfect house for an 5* party weekend!”
Reviewed 28 June 2013 for a stay in June 2013

We booked Portland house for my friends 30th/40th birthday celebrations. From start to finish Juliet & Martin assisted us with making it one of the best weekends we've all had in a long time. The house is stunning, situated in walking distance from the lovely town Matlock bath. It hosts 12 double bedrooms, 10 with own-suite. All recently refurbished & kept in keeping with the age of the house yet beautifully done out. We enjoyed having caterers in on the Friday night to cook, serve & clear away whilst we all enjoyed each others company we didn't have to lift a finger. We went onto enjoy the house's very own bar. On the Saturday we had a BBQ in the garden. The Garden was a good size, enough seating for everyone to sit & relax. The house has a lovely living room with the longest chesterfield sofa & sky tv so we could all continue to relax indoors. Everybody who came said they would all love to come back. We will definitely look at booking it again in the future. I would recommend this for large groups of family or friends where you can come & make the most of all it has to offer.

Liked best: large enough for all 23 of us to stay in the same place for a very reasonable price
Liked least: accomodation was superb ,but local town is popular with motorcyclists and the noise from main road was very loud at times when trying to relax in garden especially on the Sunday when the weather was glorious. although this was only a minor irratation
