Description: The Tom Cobley Tavern is a small country Tavern which serves the parish of Spreyton and the surrounding area. It is the hub of village life; on most evenings locals meet for a game of darts or cards. Enjoy a relaxing break in a typical unspoilt village local. Spreyton is a quiet village with a population of approximately 300 people, a primary school, tennis and cricket clubs and a beautiful church dating from the 14th century. Tom Cobley, celebrated in the folk song describing his fateful journey to Widecombe Fayre, was a considerable landowner in the parish and is buried in the churchyard. The Tavern has a traditional bar with open fire and a snug area where a host of real ales and ciders are served. There is an attractive dining room and an adjoining dining area, which opens onto a beautiful garden with country views. Upstairs on the first floor there are two bedrooms, Room 1 comprises of a double bed and single bed with a private shower room and WC and Room 3 comprises a double bed with an en-suite shower room. On the second floor there are a further three bedrooms, Room 5 comprises of a double and single bed with an en-suite bathroom with an overhead shower, Room 6 comprises of a double bed and has its own private bathroom with an overhead shower and a separate WC and Room 7 comprises of a double and single bed with an en-suite bathroom with shower overhead and a separate WC. All rooms are equipped with wash basins, central heating, Digital TV's with DVD players, radio alarm clocks with CD players, a hair dryer, complimentary toiletries and complimentary Wi-Fi. Home cooked food is served daily, with a separate lunchtime and evening menu available, including a daily specials board. Homemade food is served using as much local produce as possible. Dogs are welcome in the bar and snug areas only. A traditional public house nestled in a pretty country village.

Great country pub with good selection of ales and ciders. We had a lovely meal, too full for a sweet. Great landlord and staff made us feel very welcome

“Yet another great meal at the Cobley”
Reviewed 10 May 2014

Previous review said it all really, but just wanted to add we had yet another corking meal in the Cobley yesterday. My wife had the fillet steak which was beautifully cooked, tender and much larger than you would get in many restaurants for a fraction of the price.I had the mixed grill a proper meat feast which would surely win the Mixed Grill World Championship if such a competition existed.
Barry(sometimes known as Roger) the Landlord and his staff are brilliant. If you want great food, great service, in a great atmosphere then the Cobley really is the place to go.

“Proper pub... with excellent restaurant and food”
Reviewed 8 May 2014

Excellent village pub with a well-deserved reputation. Food was tasty and well presented, with very friendly service. Portions were large, so I was pleased we did not order a starter. It was reasonably priced, the final bill being £39 for two including drinks. Barry, the landlord was friendly and helpful. Incredible choice of beer and cider (choice of 16 real ales on tap the night we visited!). Pub also offers very comfortable on-site accommodation. Hope to return.
