I've been going to Whitehead's for years (since it first opened) and have NEVER been disappointed. The haddock is amazing, the chips and batter are superb. The only problem with finding such a great place like this is that I find it hard buying fish & chips when I'm away or on holiday for fear of disappointment because I know I will be judge the quality based on Whiteheads. I've had some good fish & chips from other places over the years but never better.

A group of us, 11 in total, booked a table on Wednesday at 6pm.
As the waitress was taking our orders, she said that she may be running out if cod!!! Wow, a fish and chip shop running out of cod.......whatever next......no potatoes to make chips?
The attitude of the waitress wasn't what I would have expected....she was very tetchy. After one of the group had a friendly word with her, she became more pleasant.
One of my friends ordered scampi, only to be told that they had run out of it!!!!
Mmmmmm a fish and chip restaurant that runs out of cod and scampi!
We all found the menu confusing.....was bread and butter, mushy peas and tea included in the price??? The menu was ambiguous....we still don't know!
Too many issues for us to return.
Shame, because those who did actually receive cod, said it was lovely. But we all didn't have it, due to the restaurant running out.
We were staying locally, and recommended Whiteheads to a couple we had met....thinking that they would have cod at the restaurant.
They went the evening after, Thursday,
ordered 2 x cod and chips, only to be told that they had run out of cod......again!!!!
They walked out and went to an Indian restaurant.
So in two consecutive evenings, Whiteheads have lost 13 customers. All of which were first time visitors.
If this is how they run their business, then I suspect they will lose many more customers.
Fancy visiting a fish and chip restaurant at the coast, and expecting to eat cod and scampi.

Whiteheads-Team, Guest Relations Manager at Whitehead's Fish and Chips, responded to this reviewResponded 4 October 2018

Dear Loiner3570

Thank you for taking the trouble and time to post a TripAdvisor review about your recent visit to Whiteheads Fish and Chips.

We welcome feedback from our customers and take every comment seriously and in this instance took a little longer than we
usually would to respond as we wanted to fully investigate the points you raised.

The lady who served you is an experienced member of our team and when you made a bulk order for cod on a Wednesday
evening she advised that she would check in the fridge and returned to let you know that there was sufficient cod and everyone
that wanted it was able to order and enjoy cod.

It is a fact that the vast majority of our customers order haddock, which we therefore cater for in bigger numbers. (Haddock is
very popular in East Yorkshire).

During Autumn weekdays we anticipate a steady demand though this past week has been busier than expected. Our fish
supplies are delivered each Friday ready for the weekends, which are our peak times though if the weather is exceptionally
fine we do have further deliveries during the week.

In the case of the requests for Scampi we were very sorry that we had run out of Scampi on Wednesday for the reason that
demand had again been higher than usual over the week and the delivery was not due until Friday.

You were confused by what is included in your fish and chip meal and stated "We all found the menu confusing.....was bread and butter, mushy peas and tea included in the price??? The menu was ambiguous....we still don't know!"

The menu clearly states at the top left in larger white print on a dark blue header

"Fish dishes. Served in batter with freshly cooked chips, a pot of tea, bread and butter
on request and a slice of lemon unless otherwise stated"

You will therefore see that a pot of tea is included and you may have bread and butter on request but mushy peas are not included.

The reason we say bread and butter on request is that some customers do not want the bread and butter and we are
thus avoiding throwing away perfectly good food.

We value your feedback and thank you again.

You will see from our reviews on TripAdvisor we get it right most of the time so if you are in the area again we hope you will
want to revisit Whitehead's Fish and Chips; our friendly staff want each customer to enjoy Whitehead's freshly cooked delicious
fish and chips, politely and courteously, in comfortable surroundings.

Best wishes from The Whitehead's Team
