Lovely local museum with some local historic artefacts, Dickens room, example of prison and rooms in Victorian style. Good to visit.

prison ship display is very good and provides a visual experience that is very realistic.
Charles Dickens is well documented here along with visual items

This museum covers a bit of everything for the Rochester area over the centuries. There are exhibits about the castle and King John's siege all the way up to Charles Dickens and Victorian times. Free to enter, the museum as actually in two buildings next door to each other. No matter what brings you to Rochester, this museum probably has some more information about it and then some!

We visited on Saturday whilst the Christmas Markets were on. It wasn't busy and was free to get in. The museum was great and definitely worth taking the time to have a good look around. It split into two different buildings and the layout is a bit querky but worth a good look.

You really don't expect this museum to be as large or as entertaining as it is. On entering there is a small area to the left and a museum shop, but it is only once you finish here and turn to the right of the entrance that it opens up. The museum has a focus on local topics, such as Charles Dickens, the Battle of Medway, Rochester, and the local area, but I believe it would entertain anyone with an interest in past events. Just when you think you have seen it all, you exit the Museum, cross over the lane, and enter a separate building, which forms part two of the museum. Here my two boys, who are easily bored, loved it, one being fixated on the history of Charles Dickens and his connection to many of the local buildings, whilst the other took control of the two exterior cameras, moving them about and zooming in on activities going on outside. I'd love to review the disabled access or facilities here, but I must admit I was so captivated by the displays and exhibits that I never paid enough attention to anything else. Definitely a museum I will visit again.
