Description: Xiankerlai, pronounced sian-ker-lie, is one of Rochesters finest Chinese restaurants and undoubtedly its most authentic. Indeed Xiankerlai have put much time and effort in to perfecting a menu that adequately reflects a cuisine, which has developed over the course of five millennia, full of history, culture and even superstition. The kitchen knows that it is vital to use the right ingredients and methods for absolute faithfulness to tradition, leaving the guest safe in the knowledge that they are enjoying Chinese recipes prepared exactly as intended, dishes eaten for thousands of years in China itself. In keeping with the precise and traditional nature of Xiankerlais food the interior has been carefully designed by an interiors expert all the way from Beijing. Giving a modern twist to ancient Chinese themes, the room is full of history - in copies of old artworks, the rough wood panelling and even, to a degree, in the colour scheme - but is also glamorous and sleek.

“Gross!”
Reviewed 8 December 2012

Booked here for a friends birthday and had our own room upstairs. Set menu for £15, karaoke and our own room sounded great! The owner agreed to email me a menu, i asked twice but he didn't bother. I arranged to deliver the deposit on an agreed day, restaurant closed. The night of our booking I went to pay the balance before meeting friends in a local pub, i had to wait 10 minutes for the manager, we were shown our room which was freezing and the stairs up to it were strewn with bits. On asking to see the set menu, there were no vegetarian food, which was a problem. I had to ask for extra's which had to be paid for! On arrival at 7.40, the stairs had not been tidied and the room was still freezing but I was shown that the heater had been put on! I asked to be shown the karaoke by a waiter, again i had to wait for the manager as he did not know how to do it. When the manager arrived a while later, he gave me a handful of cd's most without the cover, so not sure how you were supposed to find a song to sing! Also the batteries for the microphones needed recharging on several occasions. Whilst waiting for the starters we chose our mains, which did sound nice. When the starters finally arrived they were served in three bowls and looked terrible, everything had been mixed together on a bed of small pieces of potato. Everything apart from the ribs looked the same, it was like Chinese roulette! The ribs were cold, the other bits were warmer and the potato was just dripping with oil! All three bowls were virtually left untouched. When a waiter came to clear the bowls, he asked if we liked it, we all said no and asked for more drinks please. We had to asked three further times, including going down stairs twice to ask for drinks before we finally got them. The mains arrived, looking just as bad as the starters. I had two spoons of egg fried rice, two spoons of a chicken curry sauce with onion (couldn't find the chicken) and a spoon full of sweet and sour sauce with onion! And I left half of it! Again all the mains were virtually left untouched. So the food was gross, the karaoke set up rubbish, the service was absent so all in all not a great choice of venue. However, the evening was a success as with wine flowing (eventually) and great company our spirits were not dampened. My recommendation would be not to go to this restaurant for the food, I have never tasted so bad!

“All change and improvement”
Reviewed 3 November 2012 via mobile

We went here for dinner because it was the only place on the High Street that wasnt packed. It is now called the Manchurian.

The food was really good; we had sea spicy aubergine, kungbao chicken, sizzling prawns. They generally also give you a complementary 'hot pot' which seems to be a mix of beans, tomato and meat, and was very tasty. The food is good, well presented and well cooked. The service was excellent; personalised and friendly. The guy and his wife who own this place put a lot of effort into it; she does the cooking, and he serves in the restaurant. The decor is good; interesting pictures from the Song Dynasty in the back room and various Chinese objeccts (vases, statues etc) in the front room.

“Wonderful food and friendly service”
Reviewed 21 September 2012

We have eaten here several times and have found the food and service to be excellent. The staff were friendly and very attentive. This restaurant serves authentic and delicious chinese food - a pleasant surprise. Good vegetarian options in addition to wide range of delicious north chinese dishes - worth trying something different from your usual. Well worth a visit.

“Great location & decor, terrible food and service!”
Reviewed 10 August 2012

The owners have clearly gone to a great deal of effort to refurbish this impressive looking eatery.

Regrettably none of that effort has gone into the food which I can only describe as take-away style stoge. Badly presented, over priced and under cooked.

As for the service? The worst experience in a very long time. Although smiling and friendly they were clueless. Extraordinarily long wait - almost an hour for a starter - and it wasn't even busy.

I am sorry to say that this place is not likely to last very long.
