Asked for the family room with a bath in a large bathroom with hot radiator and lots of hot water through ancient plumbing. Large comfortable room. Cleanliness OK and decor is very strange but interesting in a humerous way. Staff very pleasant and helpful eg cooked my wife's special porridge and grilled tomatoes for me from the vegetable tubs at the back. Very good carpark and location opposite cathedral is a big bonus. Because of its ideosyncratic nature difficult to recommend but we would go again.

Hi Rjnglover1,

Thankyou for taking the time to review your stay with us.

We are so glad that we could accomodate all of your requests and that you enjoyed the particular 'quirks' of the room that you stayed in. If you come back, we would definitely recommend trying another of our authentically decorated boutique rooms, each is very different with it's own individual features!

(Just as a note to any other guests that may wish to stay with us, we have other rooms that are of a more modern style, should the boutiques not be to your personal tastes! We try and cater to many different styles and are always mindful to keep up standards.)

Many thanks again for the Feedback!

Joking aside. We arrived late at night with a full blown racial fight going on outside in front of the hotel. Managed to find the car park at the rear of the hotel. Our room was at the front of the hotel. No thanks dont want to hear fighting. The staff took us to another room at the back of the hotel a "family room" from which you could hear the train line clearly. This had a double bed and a single camp bed in it. The room had a weird smell about it and on further investigation it was a fresh air spray to hide another smell, musky damp old smell. Bathroom was tiny all the light fittings were broken and the mirror in the bathroom was held on by masking tape.I don't think the place was absolutely filthy but it could do with a good deep clean and bringing into the 20th Century let alone the 21st. £70 per room for a night. Dont think so. We were there for about 20 minutes foaming that we had paid for 2 nights. Had to go. Fortunately the staff were very friendly and helpful and we got a full refund. Would adsvise anyone proposing to stay there not to there are plenty of other hotels in the area that are cheaper and far superior to this hotel. It might be old and quirky but not for us.

Hi Denise4444,

I have only just been made aware of this review, and all I can do is offer my sincere apologies regarding your stay with us in Rochester, however I am glad that you are pleased with the attitude of the staff at the Gordon.

Please don't feel that the events that you witnessed on the High Street are indicative of the general atmosphere and goings-on in Rochester. I can assure you that the town is still absolutely beautiful during the day and offers an enormous selection of dining and drinking establishments (as well as our own), without any trouble at all. I can only be disappointed that these unsavoury happenings occured during your stay.

With regards to the room that you stayed in, following reviews and various other feedback, we are implementing a much needed overhaul, upgrading each room one by one. Rest assured, we are still trying to preserve the quirky authenticity and characteristic charm of the hotel, but also recognise that there are certain standards that should be expected from a 21st century hotel.

I hope that you do visit Rochester again and that your experience is far more enjoyable the next time around!

Thanks again!

My wife Christine and I decided on Friday to take off for a quick weekend away, near some water and not too far from our home in North London, so we decided on Rochester.

There weren't many hotels in the area to choose from, some of which turned out to to be (comparatively) remotely located in Chatham, and despite some pretty damning reviews of the Gordon House we decided that location was everything given that the hotel is right in the centre of Rochester with lots of nice pubs, good resturants, the Castle and The Cathedral all within minutes, if not seconds, walk.

We arrived, parked up to the rear of the hotel, and were greeted by David the proprietor who immediately made us feel very welcome. I did venture to mention to terrible reviews on Tripadvisor and let's just say that David has his own thoughts.

The ambience of the lobby area, we noted, was very "Seventies" but certainly not filthy as suggested in other reviews. We went to our room, which was huge, a little tired decoratively but perfectly clean, with a four poster bed and a decent sized, and clean, bathroom.

After a bit of a pub crawl, and a truly excellent meal at the nearby Singapora restaurant we decided at about 10.30 to have a quick drink at the bar which turned into a very enjoyable three hours talking again with David, Margaret who seems to do absolutely everything at Gordon House, and other guests who were also perfectly happy with the hotel.

Our Breakfast choice was traditional full English, which was fine.

In summary, yes it is does need refurbishment, but Gordon House is best described in its current state as very quirky, very friendly and if you don't worry about four star facilities, is absolutely fine for a weekend break. Christine's criteria for a hotel are clean, safe and a bed comfortable enough to permit a decent night's sleep. It ticked all of those boxes.

Take it for what it is, and you'll have a very nice experience.

Very tired hotel in dire need of deep clean. Linen in restaurant very grubby. Food of very poor quality and we had to send some back. Portions miniscule (for 2 people 1 potato 1 cauliflower and broccoli floret, half a carrot cut into 4 pieces with refried frozan chips which were disgusting. All in all a thoroughly unpleasant experience.

We stayed here for 2 nights over the weekend of 13th and 14th February whilst in Kent for a friend's wedding. Having read other reviews on here I was a little apprehensive about what to expect.

We got a good rate of £65 per night for a double ensuite room which included breakfast. The hotel is very centrally located on the High Street in Rochester and has its own car park at the rear which was free of charge and very convenient. The communal areas are all tired and in need of some updating and a good deep clean but you can see how it could have once be great. The staff were all pleasant and accomodating.

Our room was at the front of the hotel overlooking the High Street. The bed was comfortable though the pillows were flat and in need of replacing. The bathroom was tired and the toilet seat not properly fixed. There was plenty of hot water and the shower was powerful though it felt as if the tiles could do with a good scrub. Our friends were in another room and said they hadnt had any hot water at all but this wasn't a problem for us. The room was not overly warm but this didnt bother us too much as we weren't in the room a lot. There was plenty of space, a TV, kettle, ironing board etc all the normal hotel room essentials! And a sign in the bathroom saying 'not drinking water' above the sink!

Breakfast was from 8am to 10am and we were given the impression we were 'late' when turning up at 9.45am on the Saturday morning! The food itself was ok. My boyfriend asked for scrambled eggs and got fried and none of it was very appealing.

For what we wanted and as there is very limited choice of hotels in Rochester I would stay here again if we were in the area. It certainly isn't a luxury or boutique hotel but for the price we paid it was reasonable value for money.
